He can do it all season. He's been the same exact guy all season. Sing just didn't play him at the beginning of the year but probably should have. There are lots of things Sing should have done but he is very dumb.

I don't know why you call him dumb, Smith didn't beat out Hill for starting QB. Once a change needed to be made Sing made it, just like he has done at every other position this year.
IIRC, prior to his thumb injury in training camp, all the writers were saying Smith and Hill were neck-and-neck in the competition to be the starter. This was the same thing Martz was saying last year prior to the shoulder issue resurfacing. So Singletary really didn't make a decision on starting Hill, it was forced on him due to injury.

In the end, it has worked out in the best possible way; Hill has shown his limited skill set and it is clear he is not the long-term solution, and Smith has been able to come in without controversy and begin to re-build his career. So far, so good.
Considering the 75+ passing attempts the last two games and no INTs is a great thing. Knock on wood

Hill was hurt in camp (again) and Morgan has proved to be a viable option. Could Hill have made more/better plays in the last 5-6 games than Morgan? Maybe, but you don't know that and there's no way in hell that is some sort of glaring weakness of the coaching staff.

Alex Smith had a broken finger. They had no choice. Although I wanted them to switch to Smith earlier than they did the team was 2-0 before Smith was cleared to play. It would have been really hard for them to make that switch at that post in time.

And what is the team's record since switching to "the spread" (which they don't even run anyways)? Going through a transformation in the middle of the year after not doing something at all in training camp is not really the best idea and they are going to have to be able to run both types of offense in tandem to go anywhere.

Bad mistake by the coaches. You're 1st decent point but it's about something that had no bearing on the outcome of the game.

Another bad one on the staff. But yet again had no effect on the outcome of the game.

That was a good call. I bet you even liked it at the time.

I'm kind of indifferent about that one. If it had worked not one person would have questioned it. It would have been a great call.

You have already been reaching pretty far on some of these but now you're really reaching. Did you not see Wragge get destroyed on the first three snaps he played after taking over for Baas the other game? Baas is not stellar, but he's been pretty solid of late. I don't know that I'd start Wragge over Chilo either.

You're assuming Rossum even plays in those games. We lose that Houston game without that fumble (Hill isn't benched for Smith if the game wasn't 21-0 at the half). And the Seattle game? How do you what happens if Rossum is even in the game on that play? If they run the same play and Battle does the same thing with the exchange to Rossum we end up with the same result. Again, assuming Rossum even plays in that game. Remind me, who is he playing for right now? Oh, that's right, no one. The fact that you people are b***hing about cutting a guy that has been cut twice by different teams in less than a 6 week period is pretty telling.

There's the first valid point you've had that has any effect on the games/season. However he returned a number of punts and kickoffs when Nolan was the coach. So, even with a legit point, you're still wrong once again.

Possibly in some of the games. You do know that your favorite team (LOL) has won a few games this year. Were they outcoached, schemed, and done on X's and O's in the wins too?

Alex didn't loose the Tennessee game, the defense did. The D couldn't stop Vince Young and Chris Johnson. If Haralson had made that tackle on 4th and goal we would have had that game won.

Also, Alex is not 2-4, the 49ERS are 2-4. Coach said in his press conference that Alex doesn't tackle on defense, and Alex doesn't drop passes and fumbles the ball. The whole team should be reflected on their win-loss record.

To say that Hill is the reason for the 3-1 start is ludicrous. Hill has struggled the entire season and didn't really contribute much to the success of the early start. If credit was to be given for the start, it would have to be given to the defense since the defense was the reason we were put in a position to win those games.

Yeah, 3 turnovers against TEN was the defense's fault. With that thinking, EVERY loss is the defenses fault. Hill didn't lose one game for us, the defense did.

In my opinion, if your defense gives up more than 20 points it's the defense's fault. Conversely, if the offense scores less than 20 points it's the offense's fault.

The offense scored enough to win that game whether there were turnovers or not. The defense gave up 27. That game was on the defense.

He is obviously very legit. But the Alex haters (Hillusionists) will weap and knash their teath and hate on Alex no matter what he does. We have problems at various positions on this team and at various coaching and organizational levels.

But Alex is not a problem for this team. He is a solution if we can put a good O Line around him and give him some additional good weapons. That and continue to fill the defensive holes.

So now THOSE are problems? What were they win Hill was winning? What were they when Gore was out? I guess Hill was the problem then, right? Now, we got a 300 yard passer and the QB isn't the problem anymore.

Hill won with THOSE problems.

Hill WAS a problem back then. Go ahead and read the forums. There were a few of us saying this team was not going anywhere with Hill even when they were 2-0, 3-1. He had very little to do with those wins. They won in spite of Hill. It was OBVIOUS. If the D had been as effective as they were earlier in the year the 49ers may be undefeated in games Smith has started this season. And hopefully, for this team's sake, Hill never has to start again. If he has to throw the ball again I hope it's on a fake or botched FG.
here's my question........

is it really that hard to see if someone is that much better than someone else? I mean...what is happening out there that they didn't see that alex was able to run the spread before?

It's not like this just came out of nowhere??

It's not like Jason hill just got lucky on two touchdown receptions...what the heck is going on that we dont know our personel?

The fact that we've had to completely change everything, and leave gore out and still not have a clue what we're doing shows me that we really dont know our team that well....and by "we" I mean the coaches....

I mean? am I crazy or am I on the right path here...somebody help me out...

Style of play also dictates why a team doesn't score 20. We were a run first team and running teams don't sore a lot of points. Seriously, 3 turnovers by one play is 3 turnovers.

SEA scored less than 20 so this last game, the loss was all on our offense as 2 turnovers are 2 turnovers.

You can't just make it that black and white. The main thing is that our style of play with Hill helped us win more games than our style of play with Alex. When you pass and score more points, more points will be allowed. Teams rarely score 30 and allow 10. Just look at the Ravens defense once their offense began to score more. It just means more possessions for the other team.

I still cant fathom how an adult of average intelligence doesn't understand this. QB's are not boxers, golfers, tennis players. Those athletes have win-loss records. Football players do not. Football teams do. They are one player playing in a game that is known as the ULTIMATE TEAM SPORT. Football is the most intricate game ever played. AN NFL offense has so many moving parts, so many things that have to happen to be successful. A tackle holding a block for an extra tenth of a second can be the difference between a sack/fumble and a 65 yard TD.

The QB may be the most important player on the field at any given time (sometimes it is the RB) but attaching wins and losses to the QB alone is plain stupid. No matter how many people on internet forums, at bars, yelling on AM radio in the middle of the night, or even the "experts" on national TV speak in those terms. Plain stupid.

sorry guys. I got really bored at work. I promise i'm not crazy...you can delete this if you want.

Go niners!
Most of Alex's critics evaluated him as if he would never improve. Those of you who castigated him in earlier years made this mistake. All of you must admit that he plays better today than he did in 2006. To focus on his present imperfections is repeating the same mistake. He is the kind of personality who will focus on his problems and will try to improve on them.

What if, for the sake of argument, he makes no further progress? What does the team do? Look around at available FA QBs. These are NFL castoffs. Will we be better with any of them? Not likely. We have already tried FA QBs - JTO and Hill - and have discovered the reasons why other teams treated them as back-ups.

As for draftees, Alex is the third highest QB of the thirteen top-ranked QBs drafted since 2005 - exceeded only by Rodgers and Young. So history tells you that drafting a 1st round QB does not quarantee success in the short term.

In conclusion, Alex is the horse we must ride - we could do far worse. It the team's responsibility to surround him with the best tools they can find to help him succeed.
