Lombardi-Jury still out on Smith

No real insight in that article, kind of just a summary of whats been going on.

"Has Alex Smith proved himself as the 49ers starter? I don't know."

This guy doesn't watch football at all. Ben Rothlesburger is 6 - 7 and it's because he is a terrible QB... Football is a team sport. We have a stupid coach who costs us games and our WR's and TE's are among the worst if not THE worst in the NFL at dropping passes. To top it off our D. has no pass rush and our Safety's are toast on big plays in game after game.

But it's because of Alex we are losing...

Alex has played the best football of his career and his throws right now are as accurate as any top 5 - 10 QB's in the league.

yea that way if alex works out he can say "well I never said smith didnt have the skills to be a NFL QB"

Our WRs are not the "worst" in the NFL at dropping passes. I don't care what those stats say about dropped passes. That's such a subjective observation. Moreover, 49er fans only make such a big deal about it because we notice the drops as we watch their games more closely. There haven't been a whole of Ted Ginn drops on this team. Even the passes that was dropped by VD was too early. I've turned into a big Alex Smith fan and supporter but I'm still not going to make excuses for him the way others do. He threw that pass too early, just as he threw the pass to Crabtree on the next play too early. Yes he played a fantastic game but that pass is on him. He has to have better timing on some of his throws still.

Does anyone forget about the spectacular catch Brandon Jones made on a high and behind pass on that same drive (after the BS PI)? Point is, we're an average team and drops aren't what's costing us. Against TENN, NONE of those passes that were deflected were drops but I'm positive they went down as them. Once again, not trying to hate on Smith because I like him A LOT as our QB right now. He's got the capability to get even better, so I'm excited about the prospects of that.

I agree to some extent on the Sing issue, but I won't divulge there since it's pretty clear where he's f**ked up (TOs, game management in general).

Our pass rush is not lacking. That's so far from the truth. This has been discussed an nauseam in the other thread. I just think it's ridiculous to qualify our sacks without doing a 100% comparison of every other team top 10 in sacks. That's how sacks happen. Moreover our pressure has been way above average for the most part of this season. Our D-line usually does an awesome job of controlling the line of scrimmage. We've got an awesome front 7. If you can't see that, you don't watch the games closely enough.

Our CB play has been far worse than the play of our safeties this year. We haven't given up the deep ball as much. The problem has been that our CBs are being forced to play 7 yards off the LOS. It should be clear to Manusky that we're much better playing bump and run or jamming and dropping into a zone. In any case, we need to be more aggressive on the outside.

Nah our safety play has been pretty bad this year, worse than Clements and Spencer(who were great before Nate got injured, and Shawntae is still locking down his side of the field). Remember it was Roman who let Greg Lewis get open in the back of the end zone? Remember Goldson letting Jennings push him off and get a 70 yard touchdown on what should've been only like a 10 yard game IIRC? Remember Goldson taking horrible angles in the Jacksonville game on what should've been sacks but instead let Garrard get outside the pocket and run? Mike Lewis can't cover and Goldson is horrible at making tackles, and neither of them are ball hawks.


We've had a decent pass rush but we still don't have that dominant guy who can beat people one on one consistently, or have multiple sacks in one game. All of them have pretty much been schemed, rather than a guy just beating another guy one on one(except the 2 that Franklin's had). Both Lawson and Haralson are replaceable although Lawson's looked better lately. I don't see how you can say that we can't get better, our DLine's been good but it's your OLBs who are supposed to be getting the sacks. Soap could certainly be replaced by a guy like Suh. JSmith and Franklin are legit though.

False, everytime we go tight bump and run (last few plays of sea game, some in gb, some in ten game) the db's get raped, or give up a big play. Granted, on some of those plays they have no safety help, not like D. Goldson would do anything anyways.

So basically the guy wrote about the fact that he doesn't know about Alex. Very insightful.

So as a fan I remember feeling that QB was not the answer in 2005 because there wasn't a star QB in the draft. After watching Alex Smith my impression is that he is getting better. I feel compared to Shaun Hill he can make more throws, he is more accurate, Smith spreads the ball all over the field and doesn't key on one receiver anymore, and Smith has showed the maturity to allow the 49ers to open up the offense more.
What I do want is to prove he can play at a high level against high competition in key parts of the game, like 3rd downs I feel he could have did better to extend plays and use his check downs more wisely. I feel like the players around him are getting better and the time is coming to start winning. That being said, I don't think a rookie QB is going to move the 49ers any closer to winning in the next 2 years than Alex Smith would. The 49ers as a team are not good enough to carry rookie QB mistakes, that being said it's time Alex stops making them. So I want to play it out again next year, but if he gets hurt or the 49ers pick ends up being in the top 10 (Not the 1 from Carolina) Then I consider taking 1 of the top 3 QB going into this years draft..
