You are right, that is all we can do. Some of the posters here have an inflated sense of self importance.

The fanbase is part of the team. Although not directly involved in financial/player decisions, the fans voice is heart by front management. Take for instance the billboard sign the Bills fans put up showing their distaste for Dick Jauron. Or the reaction the fans had when Snyder prevented them from bringing billboards to the stadium because they were too critical ?

One thing the fans can do, if not the only thing, is get the message across that they are not happy with the way the team is performing. A good front office will always take these matters into account.

Dude I get that New York fans would shove a little old lady wearing a Boston jersey(pick a team) off a moving transit bus if they lost to the Sox.

BUT...

Until you live in the Bay Area and have to listen to the fans here you CANNOT even say that we take things so ho hum.

Are we as in your face as New York fans? No probably not. But nobody on this side of the country likes their teams to lose.

And I can LEGITIMATELY state "we" cause I grew up in the Area, still have family there in Los Altos, Pally and other areas there. Went to school at El Carmelo, Wibur and Gunn High as well.(Palo Alto Unified School District)

And my clock radio is tuned to KNBR so I can hear what fans there are thinking and feeling. This week it's gonna be packed with ticked off fans. A good bunch of them are gonna crap on Alex and scream about the management.

So don't think that New York fans are the only fans that are like that.

Yeah, I listen to KNBR as well. And I too have family in the Bay Area. I may not be surrounded by Niner fans, but what I see on tv and hear through the media is more than enough to convey how our fans feel about the team. Our stadium is empty on gameday, sometimes the opposition outseats us in the stadium, our fans are notorious for being wine sipping, cheese eating, fairweather fans that disappear when the team is losing. This is not my opinion; even fans from the Bay Area could confirm this for you. And its not just in SF; quite honestly, I havent seen a person sporting Ninergear since 2002......in the 90s, you couldnt walk 10 feet without seeing soemone donning a Niners hat, t-shirt, etc.

Sorry, but our fanbase just doesnt hold our front mngment as accountable as other teams' fans do.

bulls**t ! i was 3 when young won the '94 superbowl. let's just say i followed the garcia/hearst/owens team for a while but mostly grew up on the alex smith rebuilding process

i'm not worrying though, it'll just make a playoff spot at least that much better !

I vividly remember the 49ers kicking the Chargers asses. I was in kindergarten when they whooped the Broncos. That was my first super bowl I remembered, thus created my 49er fandom in Texas. So I remember 2 Super Bowls in my lifetime and I'm sure I will see another.

Lifelong Bay Area resident here. I can honestly say that I and most of my friends have lived and died with the Niners for the last 30+ years. The last few years have been very depressing for all of us. I have hope for a return to greatness but that hinges on getting a real GM. Until then we are in this perpetual "Wait until next year" mode and while most everyone here seems to be cool with it, I am not.

In a city where fans arent too expectant on team success, and management has no sense of urgency to get the organization back on top, is it possible that we could go an entire lifetime without a SB ? I mean, who knew in 1994......15 YEARS AGO ! that we would go almost 2 decades without a ring. Even if we become a contender, we still have to beat.........well.......other contenders. We're so immersed with making the playoffs that we've forgotten that we actually have to beat teams there. I mean.......we made the playoffs ever year from 1981-1998 (except 1), and we only won the ring 5 times. There's no guarantee that a playoff berth equals an automatic SB victory.

We have a young team. An improving team, no doubt. But unless Niner brass gets a fire lit under their ass, we're going nowhere fast. Teams like the Colts and Pats put together championship units relatively fast. They drafted their franchise player (QB), and built a team around that player. Both playing in Conference Championship games within 5 years of their star QB taking center, and both making the playoffs within 3 years. Teams like the Eagles, Chargers, and Giants took similar paths.

And here we are, 5 years after drafting our QB, still waiting for "next year", because that will be the year "we make the playoffs". And then what ? We'll be content just because we made an appearance there.


Just something to think about folks...............

I understand your frustration. I am there with you but keep in mind, while we may be going through a rough drought, at least we aren’t the Lions or the Browns. I mean, as bad as things are, at least we can hope for things to get better. Lion & Browns fans are ecstatic to just get a win or two a season. 2 wins = a good year for them.

Never seen us win a SB (was outta the country in 94) and have seen us win prob less than 8 or 9 playoff games.

But what do other teams fan bases do to hold the franchise accountable? The only real voice any fan base has is a closed wallet. And to that point I'll say that there have been several thousand empty seats at every home game this year. Probably partly due to the economy and partly due to fan dissatisfaction.

Raging blog posts and talk radio discussion flaming the organization is primarily for public consumption.

Money talks.

Just look at Bay area teams. A's, Giants, Sharks, Warriors have not won championships in forever.
