The Seattle Seahawks are reshaping their coaching staff after the departure of offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates on Tuesday, and some league sources expect former Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels to be among the top candidates to replace him.
East-West Shrine Game on NFL Network:
On Saturday, Jan. 22, NFL stars of tomorrow compete in the 2011 East-West Shrine Game in Orlando, Fla. Coverage begins on NFL Network at 3:30 p.m. ET.
» NFL Network broadcast schedule
The Seahawks have been willing to spend a lot of money in coaches and players, and McDaniels is a hot candidate who already has interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings and St. Louis Rams. McDaniels was the first candidate interviewed by the Rams for their offensive coordinator opening, but those talks have hit a snag, a source said.
Also, Tom Cable, former head coach of the Raiders, is another top candidate available as offensive line coach, an area that needs upgrading in Seattle. Cable is a direct coaching descendant of Alex Gibbs, who retired as Seattle's line coach just before the season began.
Ray Brown, who will not return to the 49ers as assistant offensive line coach, and Carl Smith, formerly of the Browns, would fit schematically with the Seahawks and head coach Pete Carroll as well, perhaps in assistant roles.
The Seahawks also are interviewing Darrell Bevell, who remains -- for now -- the Vikings' offensive coordinator, for their quarterbacks coach position, according to a league source.
Some coaches who know both Bates and Carroll believe that the differences in their personalities -- Carroll has more of a laid-back persona, while Bates is fiery and super-intense at times -- could have led to the parting.
Ultimately, the Seahawks will have a series of staff changes for second offseason in a row.

Hire Bates who just got fired by Seattle, as the new QB Coach. Knows carroll well and could coach up a Matt Hasslebeck stop gap in frisco..look what's said about him:
"Bates, the son of longtime NFL assistant Jim Bates, was quarterbacks coach for the Denver Broncos in 2008, helping the team to the NFL's No. 2-ranked offense that season. He spent three seasons with the Broncos."
Good QB coach, not so good Coordinator ??

Harbaugh coaching staff update
Jim Harbaugh has plenty of assistant-coach candidates, but so far has made only three official hires. More promise to come this week, perhaps today. If Harbaugh still does not have his entire staff in place, he likely will resume the interview process at next week's Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Ala. Where things stand as of now:
Offensive coordinator:
Greg Roman
Comment: Jim Harbaugh will call a lot of his own plays. Roman served the last two years under Harbaugh at Stanford and helped coordinate the team's running game.
Quarterbacks coach:
Unknown
Comment: Harbaugh served as his own quarterbacks coach at the University of San Diego and likely will be very hands-on at this position.
Offensive line
Tim Drevno and Mike Solari
Comment: NFL teams typically have two coaches for this unit, although one of them usually is an assistant. It's not yet known how the division of labor will be handled.Running backs coach:
Tom Rathman*
Comment: Rathman has not yet been retained, but he is considered a leading candidate because he has plenty of experience in a West Coast offense both as a player and a coach (nine seasons under Steve Mariucci in SF and Detroit)
Tight ends coach:
Unknown
Comment: The team has made no attempt to retain Pete Hoener, who has served as tight ends coach since 2005. Roman coached tight ends both in the NFL (Houston) and at Stanford.
Wide receivers coach:
Unknown
Comment: Jerry Sullivan has handled this job since 2005 but he told The Sacramento Bee that he would retire to his home in Austin, Texas. Pep Hamilton, who helped coach quarterbacks for the 49ers under Norv Turner in 2006, reportedly will be retained by Stanford. Hamilton also has been a quarterbacks coach and could have filled that role as well.
**Update, 12:15 p.m.** Yogi Roth, a former USC assistant coach, Tweeted that John Morton will take over as receivers coach for the 49ers. Morton coached alongside Harbaugh both with the Raiders and at the University of San Diego.
Defensive coordinator
Vic Fangio
Comment: He spent 11 seasons as an NFL defensive coordinator. Last year he was Harbaugh's defensive coordinator at Stanford. He'll run a 3-4 system with the 49ers.
Defensive line:
Jim Tomsula*
Comment: This is another presumed retention that has not been announced. Tomsula, however, is popular with players and management, and he has presided over one of the team's best units since 2007.
Linebackers
Jim Leavitt*
Comment: Leavitt has interviewed with the position but has not been hired. He also is considering a position at Kansas State where Leavitt coached for six seasons prior to becoming the head coach at the University of South Florida. Leavitt has ties to Harbaugh's father, jack, and to the DeBartolo family.
Secondary
Ed Donatell*
Comment: The San Francisco Chronicle first reported interest in Donatell, a former defensive coordinator for the Falcons and Packers, and CSN Bay Area reports he is meeting with Harbaugh today.
Special Teams
Unknown
Comment: Brian Polian, Harbaugh's special teams coordinator last season, is likely to remain at Stanford. The 49ers might show some interest in former linebacker Jeff Ulbrich, who served as an assistant special teams coach in Seattle this past season. It's unknown whether the 49ers will retain Dave Fipp, an energetic and likable assistant under Al Everest and Kurt Schottenheimer.

Some sad news. Granville DeMerritt, a fixture in the 49ers press box since the franchise's earliest days, passed away last week. DeMerritt - everyone knew him as Granville or Gran --was as warm and welcoming a man as you'll ever meet and he was a favorite among reporters and team employees. A memorial service for DeMerritt will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Star of the Valley Church located at 495 White Oak Drive, Oakmont, CA (Santa Rosa).

Does the fact that Solari doesn't have a * next to him like Tomsula, Rathman have mean that he has officially been retained? I've been watching like a hawk hoping these 3 guys stay on and haven't seen anything saying Solari is officially back.
Also this puzzles me, why is Hue Jackson announcing/commenting on the 9ers new DB coach?
Ed Donatell, who spent last season as Denver Broncos secondary coach, will coach 49ers defensive backs, new Raiders coach Hue Jackson confirmed at his press conference Tuesday.

My guess is he called trying to get him to come to Oakland just to be told he was coming here

I fully expect Jim to make a call to Jeremy Bates for the QB coach position, Seattle was stupid to let him go (without at least offering a demotion/expanded assistant role).
Bates is a former Gruden/Shanahan lackey, he could take a step back at QB coach, and be our offensive coordinator down the road.

St. Louis - you are correct. LOL! Is my personal hatred for the Cards seeping through?
This is why Fangio needs his 3-4 pass rusher! We need to counter this and improve our edges with new talent at CB.
Or am I wrong in this?

True, but Bates does have a connection with the 49ers newly hired Wr coach John Morton. They worked together at USC during the 2009 season.
Bates would be another solid hire for Harbaugh, unless Bates has better options (which he might) this could actually happen.

I see a huge youth movement amongst our position coaches. -Guys that are up-and-comers, that might be full-time coordinators/head coaches in the next 3-4 years.

Still need:
Quarterbacks
Tight Ends
Linebackers - Jim Leavitt?
Outside Linebackers
Special Teams Coordinator
Other Potential Coaching Positions:
Each team has different positions. Singletary had one of the biggest staffs. We might not have all of these or might create new positions with Harbaugh.
Assistant Wide Receivers Coach
Special Assistant to Head Coach
Assistant Special Teams Coach
Offensive Assistant
Pass Rush Specialist

If our team does well I agree. We either have to be doing so well the guys don't mind staying to win a Superbowl(s) or have to do what the Patriots do and have guys ready to go when we need to promote them. They have their DB/LB coaches ready to be DC when their DC gets hired as a HC and same with the offensive side of the ball. You can block a coach from interviewing for a lateral move but you can't stop them if the job is a promotion. You have to have everyone on the same page and ready.

It's also sort of the exact 'blueprint' Walsh had in place for his coaches (back in the day). -The promotion/turnover record was huge for us in the 80s/90s (to a margin of 3-4 year coaching transitions), but Walsh always seemed to have an assistant waiting in the wings to take over (either from within the team, or a local college assistant from within the Bay Area).
In Fact, most of the hirings thus far have been local; makes you wonder if we'll follow the 'local' standard for the mid-round prospects of our draft board (as the Pats have been doing), and bring in nearby 'Pac-10' kids.
