I think Barrows tweeted that the Niners and Leavitt are in discussions. Here's a little 411 on the connection between Harbuagh and the DeBartolo family with Leavitt.
Quote:
TAMPA — Moving quickly after a $2.75 million settlement with USF, Jim Leavitt's return to coaching football could wind up coming in the NFL.
The day after he settled his wrongful termination lawsuit, the former Bulls coach was being considered for the linebackers job on former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh's staff with the 49ers, the Sacramento Bee reported Wednesday.
Leavitt, who did not return calls seeking comment, hasn't coached since he was fired by USF in January 2010. A school investigation found he committed "serious violations" of its conduct policy by grabbing a player by the throat and striking him twice in the face during halftime of a November 2009 game against Louisville.
Leavitt, 56, has a history with the Harbaugh family, going back to his first seasons at USF.
The Bulls played Western Kentucky, coached by Harbaugh's father, Jack, each season from 1997-2000.
Last spring, before the NFL draft, Leavitt took a trip to California, made a stop at a 49ers practice, talking with then-coach Mike Singletary, then went to Stanford to visit Jim Harbaugh.
Leavitt had dinner with Harbaugh and his father, who said he has admired Leavitt since the first time he coached against him.
"It was a nice visit. I've always had tremendous respect for him," the elder Harbaugh said Wednesday. "His teams were always well-coached, well-prepared, played the game hard. My relationship with Jim has always been a good one."
Leavitt has personal ties to the DeBartolo family, which has owned the 49ers for more than 30 years. Leavitt bought his home on Davis Islands in 2006 for $1.7 million from Lisa DeBartolo, the daughter of former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr., who attended a charity dinner on Harbour Island with Leavitt when the Super Bowl was in town two years ago.
A month later, USF served as host for a DeBartolo Football Festival, a free clinic for more than 400 local youth and high school players.
Leavitt spent significant time during the past year getting to know the nuances of NFL schemes, spending early mornings breaking down game tape with former Bucs coach and current ESPN analyst Jon Gruden.
He was active in scouting events leading up to last year's draft, attending the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., then the NFL combine as a guest of the Rams.
He also attended the personal workout of Sam Bradford, who became the top overall pick by the Rams.

He can't be accused of hiding his emotions. Wouldn't want to go back to face this guy after blowing an arm tackle...

"Also, former tight ends coach Geep Chryst could be headed to San Francisco to join Jim Harbaugh's staff in some capacity.
He was Harbaugh's offensive coordinator with the San Diego Chargers in 1999 and 2000, when the new 49ers coach was near the end of his playing days."

All I can say is that this is one experienced staff, in a good way and not in a Jimmy Rae way, for an inexperienced coach. Me likey.

Well I doubt we'd have to worry about him getting physical with an NFL player. Can you imagine him try to grab Spikes by his tree trunk of a neck!

Geep Chryst
Tight Ends/Quality Control Offense
College: Princeton
NFL Experience: 18 years
Bio
Coaching
Geep Chryst, now in his fourth year as Carolina's tight ends coach, oversaw a group in 2009 that had the most productive pass-receiving season for Panthers tight ends in 10 years as the trio of Jeff King, Dante Rosario and Gary Barnidge combined to total 63 receptions for 755 yards and five touchdowns. The unit also contributed to a running game that saw Carolina become the first team in NFL history to have two running backs each rush for more than 1,100 yards in the same season.
Chryst has a played an important part in the development of King, Rosario and Barnidge - all of whom have been drafted by the Panthers since 2006. In Chryst's first year as tight ends coach in 2007, King had the best season for a Carolina tight end since Wesley Walls in 2001, catching 46 passes for 406 yards and two touchdowns. Of Rosario's 50 career receptions, 35 (70.0 percent) have yielded a first down or touchdown. Barnidge, in his second year as a pro in 2009, averaged 20.2 yards per catch on 12 receptions for 242 yards.
In his 18th year as an NFL coach, Chryst took over the tight ends during his second season with the Panthers and also serves as the team's quality control assistant for the offense. Coaching stops in Chicago, Arizona (twice) and San Diego have left him more than prepared. Five times Chryst has been part of an offense that has ranked in the top 10 in the league in rushing and three more times he has been involved in an offense that has ranked in the top 10 in the league in passing.
Chryst spent five seasons with the Bears as director of research/quality control from 1991-95, three seasons with the Cardinals as tight ends coach from 1996-97 and quarterbacks coach in 1998, and two seasons with the Chargers as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach from 1999-2000 before returning to the Cardinals in 2001.
From 2001-03, Chryst served as quarterbacks coach for Arizona, where he was reunited with quarterback Jake Plummer, who he previously tutored in 1998. Under Chryst's guidance in 2001, Plummer threw 18 touchdowns and just 14 interceptions after having 45 passes picked off the previous two years. He only had two interceptions in his final 245 pass attempts and none in a span of 142 consecutive throws. In 1998, Plummer ranked fourth in the NFL in passing, and the Cardinals won their first playoff game in 51 years.
Prior to working with the Cardinals quarterbacks, Chryst coached Arizona's tight ends. Under his tutelage, Pat Carter registered 26 receptions for 329 yards in 1996, the best production by a Cardinals tight end since 1989. The next season, Chris Gedney caught four touchdown passes, the most by a Cardinals tight end since 1988.
While with San Diego, Chryst was instrumental in the implementation and development of the team's productive, no-huddle offense. In 1999, the Chargers completed the most passes (332) in 13 years, and quarterback Jim Harbaugh enjoyed the second-highest passing output of his 15-year NFL career and became San Diego's first quarterback since Hall of Famer Dan Fouts to pass for 400 yards in a game.
Playing and Personal
Chryst was a three-year starter at linebacker for Princeton in addition to playing baseball for two seasons for the Tigers. He earned a bachelor's degree in history from Princeton and added a master's degree in educational administration from Wisconsin.
History
Linebacker Princeton 1981-84. Pro tight end/longsnapper: Orlando Thunder (WLAF) 1992. College coach: Wisconsin-Platteville 1987, Wisconsin 1988, Wyoming 1989-90. Pro coach: Orlando Thunder (WLAF) 1991, Chicago Bears 1991-95, Arizona Cardinals 1996-98, 2001-03, San Diego Chargers 1999-2000, joined Panthers in 2006.

I love it we finally have a talented coach who has a background in offense, we havent really had much luck with defensive coaches, with Harbaugh we will finally have the same system year after year and not have to deal with the revolving door at OC, even if Roman gets hired next year by another team we will still have our number 1 shotcaller with the team.
IMO this hurt us and never gave our offense time to grow, switching systems every year always kept us behind the eight ball, but now we have a coach who will bring back the WCO and hopefully develop a solid QB and get us back to the playoffs
