A. Franklin to be franchised?

I for some reason am still more comfortable going after a Wilfork or Hampton with a proven track record then this guy. Worse case franchise him and let him perform another year if we can't lure in the cream of the crop to SF then show him the money!

Franklin has been earnng his keep. If you have followed the discourse about Franklin over the past two years, it now becoming apparent even to members on this forum that he is a good player.

He has gotten better in the last year and a half.

In the last year, Willis, Spikes, and Ulbrich talked about how well Franklin was playing. Few believed them. Now his play is being recognized around the league.

I have voted for him to be All-Pro.

Why would anyone think that he will not continue to get better?

We should franchise him if we have to, but I would prefer that we sign him to an extension.

He doesn't want an extension. He wants to see just how much money he can get. What does that tell you?

He showed only flashes of good late last year, and has shown a lot of good this year. What does that tell you? The guy lacks motivation to play to the level of that which he is capable. So we tag him... get what we can out of him in 2010 (as he'll still play hard for his next big paycheck). Meanwhile, we draft a NT prospect that we can groom to be his successor. (unless they see a future for Balmer/Ice there)

As far as we know, and that is not the far, he does not want an extension now. That could change.

Go back and read what the 49er players have been saying about Franklin for more than a year and a half.

Then think what does that tell you.

Not really. Most Franchises are opting for cheaper younger coachs with the hope for a Sean Peyton, Mike Smith, outcome. That way if they bomb cough Joe Gibbs cough, they arn't on the hook for tons o' cash.

Hampton needs a rocking chair. Wilfork would be much much much more expensive can you say 80-90 million? Haynesworth and his play should scare off anybody with being comfortable with that idea.

What makes you think he doesn't want to be here? He's never made a statement to even hint that.

What makes you think that Pittsburgh and New England will let their franchise NT walk? Their NTs are a key to their whole defense (unlike Seymour, where DEs are expendable in a 3-4) as well as the OLBs. The chances of our team getting the likes of Hampton and/or Wilfork are very very slim.

I'm not saying Franklin doesn't want to be here. BUT, IF he doesn't want to be here. And I don't know if you remember rumors about Hampton on the trade block, but it was said by the D-line coach, they would rather have Hampton play out his contract than trade him. As for Wilfork, NE just drafted two young NT's in Ron Brace (2nd round) and Myron Pryor in the (6th round). Also Logan Mankins contract is also up, their best O-lineman. I think they would rather franchise Mankins who can continue to protect Tom Brady than over-pay for Wilfork, who's replacements are waiting in the wings.

You make think Mankins is their best O-line man, but did you see Volmer accordian Dwight Freeney? Freeney hasn't been treated like that in well his whole career.

Does anyone else get the feeling Franklin doesn't want/care to be here next year? Every statement that I read of his seems like he is completly indiffrent about being a Niner. I'm not mad at him for wanting to get his money, but it would be nice to hear things from him like, "I hope we can get something done" or "I would love to be back as a Niner." Instead, all I hear is that he doesn't even want to negotiate until the season is over and he is even quoted as saying, "It willl be nice to know where I'll be next year."

I hope I'm just reading into it, but does anyone else get that sense? If so, f**k that fact f**k he would probably be out of the league if we didn't bring him over.

Prior to this year Franklin drew interest from the Jets, Steelers, and Packers. He has always been a dominant 3-4 nose and was finally given that full-time role this year. Without him the wheels fall of the run defense. Trotter said after the game that Franklin was the entire focus of the Eagles game plan. If we don't franchise him we will lose him because I think he is pissed off that the front office hasn't talked to him once about a new contract.

Thats the business side talking. He also saw what happened to M. Douglas. He has been around long enough to know what can happen to a player in the NFL. So once he gets his money then he will do his job for us. He has done his job. He is the NT on the #5 running defense in the NFL.
