At least this way would get something if he goes somewhere. If he stays it benefits us.

He's not only playing well in the contract year. He's played well since Manusky changed his responsibilities after Nolan left.

I'm just scared that once he gets paid he will not play like he is playing this year.

Can't think of a better candidate myself. And Franklin is nowhere near the level of being able to b***h about it either. Though that does not mean he won't

I am a bit skeptical. Why is he now playing well during a contract year?

He played well in the second half of last year after we got rid of Nolan's hybrid horses**t and started playing a simplified 1-gap 3-4.

The guy is a big and true NT. He has been called one of the top 5 tackles in the game by multiple sources. Have you not seen his play this year?
The NT position is finally one of the ones that we do not have to worry about so much anymore. Maybe drafting a guy to back him up and develop, but not in the early rounds. The D line is pretty damn good as it is. This team needs to focus on the offensive line.

Good for Franklin. He sure went for a guy no one wanted on the team, at least the fans, to a guy they need to keep.

Franchise him, then maybe Balmer is ready to step in after next season?
I don't get why people still want someone else. What is wrong with his play now that there is a need to draft a NT with no guarantee that he will be as good or better than Franklin is playing now?
And it's not just his contract year, he was getting positive comments last season too.

Yep. We also have seen what he is capable of (top 5 DT/NT), so why would we trust that another guy could come into this defensive scheme and perform any better? Contract year or not, I am willing to bet that the niners are not willing to take the risk of losing him. He makes life a lot easier for the teams best player.

Lets hope he won't pull a Jamarcus Russell on the niners but I'm sure he won't
