Rachal: Slump, Bad Coaching or Bust?

Too early to tell
Poor coaching obviously, just look at the rest of the line. The only guy who is legitimately good is Heitmann, and he was already good before Warhop/Foerster were here.

Coming out of college he was considered very talented, but raw. I think it was a mistake to throw him out there that early, considering his techniques weren't good. He has blown assignments and has been between by lineman before anybody else even got their feet set.

He needs to watch more film and just work harder and he will be fine.

looked good under Martz.

looking bad under Raye.

I'd say mix of both.

I think Raye see's the talent, and thinks he knows how to use it, but he's just not doing a good job at it.
I think the best combo would be Pashos at RT and Snyder at RG
I had high hopes for Foerster, but it seems the o-line as a group, which was never a group of world beaters before he took over, has regressed.

Some of it has to fall on Rachal of course. But I still think he has the tools to be an above average starting OG.

Feel the same way. I really thought Warhop was a bad hire and hoped Foerster was gonna be a big improvement. Maybe meshing his schemes to Raye's offense it taking time? But it sure seems like we have regressed.
It's a combination of things. Let's be honest. He's not going to be an elite guard, and I believe expectations were way too high after he was named the starter. He struggled last year in a number of games, especially against the Cowboys. He looked promising in others.

I believe he has regressed since the end of last year, and part of that could be coaching. He certainly has some serious problems with technique, something I stated a lot last year. Coaching can help minimalize this issue.

A bigger problem may be football intelligence. The interior lineman have to often times read and react, and some players have it, others don't.

So, there are enough issues at this point to yank him out for a game or more, get a chance to clear his head, and regain some confidence.
COACHING -- Warhop was let go with Nolan - but with the description below you would think he would have been a fit for Singletary? I was NOT a fan of the Warhop hire - based on how he was fired mid-season from the Cowboys when their line looked horrible. BUT, this article (Below) raises questions about his release. Nolan had already brought in Foerster a co-OL coach (when he hired Martz). But this article almost makes it seem that Foerster was retained because he was a better fit for Martz offense. THEN Nolan, Warhop fired mid-season and Martz released by Singletary after the season. The irony could be that now that Martz is gone, Warhop may have been a better fit for the Ray system??

George Warhop will be the Browns line coach, according to several league insiders who said his hiring is a strong one. Warhop spent the last three-and-a-half seasons in San Francisco, and was swept out after seven games of the 2008 season when San Francisco fired Mike Nolan.

Odd as it sounds given the circumstances of his firing, Warhop comes with strong reviews around the league.

He's vocal, demanding and will not hesitate to tell a player where he stands. He also won't hesitate to tell the team what he thinks about an issue or approach. In short, he sounds like an old-school offensive line coach, a gnarly guy who likes his guys to get muddy and dirty and nasty.

Warhop spent five years in Arizona and two in Dallas before joining the 48ers. When he coached the offensive line, Frank Gore became a Pro Bowl back, running for 1,695, 1,102 and 1.036 yards the last three seasons. Why was he let go? One negative: 49ers quarterback T.J. Sullivan was sacked 29 times in seven games.

(story goes on to discuss Mangini staff)

NOT THAT CLEVELAND LOOKS GOOD WITH WARHOP!!

I agree. Plus more film work. Both on his techniques, and on the opposing team's D-Line that week
Once he gains more confidence and improves his pass protection, the rest should all fall in place, he's just gonna take a little longer to develop thats all.
I think that he will be fine. He probably needs to be benched for a while to get his head straight but I think he will be fine.
I dunno. He was progressing sooo nicely last year, so I guess that it has to be a sophomore slump right?
