Here's an interesting issue. Suppose Bradford comes to be considered the best franchise QB prospect in the last few years, and suppose there is a big drop-off from him to the rest of next year's class.

If he's projected to go in the top 2 or 3, should we consider combining picks to get him?

I think so assuming Carolina sucks enough for us to have a shot at drafting him.

Absolutely! The only thing I wonder is if the Niners can afford a Bradford... However, if so then they need to do what it takes to get him. Forget the other draft picks. The niners have two draft picks and Carlonia is looking terrible... they have a good shot.

This organization has the best foundation in terms of coaching, players and ownership I've seen in a while. I hope the don't screw it up and overlook the need for a blue chip QB. That's the only missing piece of the puzzle. Until then I think Shuan Hill will keep us in decent shape.
Oh and please spare me the "Blue Chipper" part of this equation.

We've seen TONS of those come into the league and not amount to anything. Leaf, Couch, McNown, AKILI Smith, Marinovich(sp?) the list is long and undistinguished.

Though I think that Couch really got the Bums rush in cleveland. Butch Davis mucked that up horribly. I find it completely odd that the Line that was drafted to protect Couch couldn't do so, and then when traded to another team could protect THAT Starter. It's something that I had NEVER in my life seen before. An entire OLine traded to another team. Couldn't be because the OLine coach isn't effective could it? Nawwwww that's not it at'all.

In any case Blue Chippers are great to speculate on but there is no guarantee or warranty on their foreheads. Until they get into the speed of the game they are just as bad as guys that play in the WAC or any other lower division conference, to my way of thinking.

OH YEAH!!! What about Matt Leinart? There's yet ANOTHER Blue Chipper that doesn't look to be cutting it any time soon.[nuetral]

I'm sorry, but the practice of listing off previous busts is just not very compelling. If you are a franchise that needs to get a long-term starting QB, other teams aren't going to trade theirs to you very often. If you decide to draft one, you want to get the best one you can within reason. Pre-draft rankings are just the best guesses of all the experts involved.

So, if you need a franchise QB and you're on the clock at #5 with a couple high-first-round prospects staring you in the face, the fact that Ryan Leaf sucked is simply not a compelling reason to eschew those guys.

4. Cut our losses with Alex Smith.

5. Develop Nate Davis and Brian Brohm for the future, a veteran can always be picked up.

Dude this would be awesome. I've wanted Brohm since he came out. I know he didn't do much with the Pack but.........

This exactly what I eante3d this offseason but wanted to give Smith one last chance then throw Brohm and Davis in there throughout the year if Smith didn't work to see what we have. With our defense playing the way they are playing glad Hill's in there. but would rather see Davis and Brohm behind him.

I wonder what Brohm's problem is?? How do you just draft a QB in the 2nd round in last years draft, then just like that put him on the practice squad...WTF. This will be probably the closet thing to stealing a QB from another team, don't see why we don't pounce on it.

It's a figure of speech dude... we know nobody in the draft is a guarentee, but at least with a "blue chipper" you got a better shot due to the fact that the basis for success is his college performance. However, IMO not all blue chip players are found in the first round, if that's what you mean.

Don't forget Alex Smith.

But how about Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco and Mark Sanchez, shoot even Matt Stafford have looked 10x's better than Alex Smith.

As I understand the term, blue-chipper means a first round prospect by definition. Maybe I'm mistaken.

The fact that the NFL is littered with 2nd, 3rd, 4th round and later QBs who are outplaying first round quarterbacks doesn't change the fact that when you are looking at a current QB crop (without the benefit of seeing into the future), the guys on top are ranked on top for a good reason.
sorry but alex smith is done in sf. he will ride the bench this year & he will be gone at seasons end. makes all the sense in the world. he had his chance & didn't do anything to win the job so bye bye!

Let's try to stay on topic. The poll presented four options, so it's not really productive to explain why you did not select option #3. How about defending the option you did select?

You might be right about the term blue chipper. I just use it as a figure of speech to rate his overall worth as a player. It's all perspective.

BTW I agree with your post. Anyone would be crazy to pass up Bradford or McCoy when the niners offense is sluggish at this point. Especially with a very talented young receiving core with VD, CRAB and Morgan.

I'm not sure Bradford and McCoy belong in the same sentence though. Isn't McCoy more of a 2nd round type? If Bradford is going to go #1 overall, I like the idea of spending the Panther pick on Jake Locker and spending our pick on the offensive line.

Hmmmm with THAT attitude, guys like Bradshaw and Young would never have made the HoF. And along with guys like Plunkett or Dilfer would never have held a Lombardi trophy over their heads.

Makes me damn glad you guys ain't running things. I think that when you have no other option, your way works. But if you have a list of options before you that need to be addressed, WHY make such wholesale drastic changes?

Isn't that what you were ragging on Nolan for? I mean let's be honest. We KNEW that Rattay was not the guy. But he was "serviceable"(like another guy that people seem fine with) enough to address the other TRULY important items. Such as the Line and the rest of the Offensive units. Instead Nolan drafts Smith(debatable move still) and then trades Rattay.

Now I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed. But I don't remember Bill Walsh trading a serviceable player and then expecting the Rookie to be Veteran material. I know he traded "problem children" but the man PROTECTED his investments like a boxer would protect himself in the ring. If he had to he would find another solution.

Now I'm not sure about Spurlock, I didn't see much of him due to my schedule, but I wouldn't cut a viable player only to bring in a guy that we know NOTHING about based on Preseason performance. And NO the FA list is deep with out of work guys so keeping 4 QBs' isn't and shouldn't be an option.

that would sound great to me. However, if McCoy has a good combine trust me, dude is going first round for sure... at least that's my opinion.
People who said "Alex" were kidding right? Like being absurdly sarcastic, no? Must have been. Insanity!

You are a walking contradiction Ceadder. You're the biggest Alex Smith homer on the board and yet this post I'm quoting from you is talking about how "blue chippers" can end up sucking in the NFL. Well no s**t!!!

Do you realize that's exactly the situation with Alex Smith? That's what 99% of the sane NFL world has been saying!
