Alex Smith said he feels as if he's far more ahead of the game, as far as knowledge of 49ers' offense, than he's ever been at this point.
Eric green wasn't feeling it in miami. Now? 'i'm on fire right now ...,' he said.

So was he doing really bad? Or was he doing bad because he didn't like it there?

W/ QBs, Singletary says he's keeping competition fair. He notes he's starting to see things he wants to see. But he's not divulging leader. Eric Green said he knew shortly after signing w/ Mia that he made a mistake. He said he should've signed w/ SF in March. Now, he's here. Willis, Haralson and newcomer Green will not play. Gore and Bruce might play one series apiece for 49ers. QB Alex Smith will get the start Saturday vs. Raiders, 49ers coach Singletary said. It's his big chance in competition w/ Shaun Hill. Singletary on qb competition: we're definitely closer than a week ago. Michael lewis (concussion) will be a game time decision. Eric green won't play.

dang i wanted to see green play. how come hes not going to? i think shaun hill is going to win this comp, alex is going to need a big game to fend him off.

Probably because he was signed 3 days before the game and won't have a clue what the playbook is like. Expect him to play next preseason game.
I hope Smith shows something this weekend, even thou I believe Hill will start the season. I want to see the team take another step forward this week.

That's not the problem here. It's his mental process of the defense that is slow and he's going to have THAT issue each week which is why he's mainly effective with curls and 9 routes. Not much to really read on those routes.

i dunno i remember hearing that sparano killed his confidence somewhere. had to be problem he didnt like with tge organization because miami the city is awesome. it could also be that he was unhappy that they drafted 2 cbs with their first 2 picks right after he signed. i dunno.

from Barrow's article:

Green also said he like the license the 49ers cornerbacks are given. They often have the discretion to play press coverage or to lay back, whereas in Miami the system was much more rigid. "With (Bill) Parcells, you can't even chew gum," he said.

If that is true, has it been Clements' decision to play with a 5 yards cushion against WR?

maybe he is baiting the QB's to throw certain throws so he can get some pick 6's

Depends on the playcall. I would guess that sometimes they have an option other times they don't...

OK now that we know Coffee is a beast at RB, IMO I think we should start sitting him down in the 1st quarter and save him for the season. Its time for Robinson and Sheets to take over the workload for Preseason.

I think that is a good idea. We know what we have in Coffee now.

I also think that the Hill/Smith duel should be decided post-cowboys game. Then lets see what we have with Nate Davis @ QB. Give him the entire 2nd half in Game 4.

Hill and Smith should both play at least 1 quarter. Davis should see extensive playing time the 2nd half. At least that's what I would do.

We haven't exactly been playing world-beaters when it comes to stopping the run. I'd like to see all of our #1's get significant playing time at Dallas. I'd love to see at least two series from Gore, then Coffee into the 3rd quarter with the rest of the #1's.

It will be a good final test before the first cut-down date to 75 a week from Tuesday.
