Is Balmer still AWOL? How many unexcuses are they go to give him before they cut him?

As a person and not a fan, I honestly feel sorry for him and I hope he can take care of his business. Its not his fault he was a first round pick... I honestly had never heard of him until he was selected. But whats most disappointing is how quickly he gave up... I'm assuming he was one of those athletes who never been tested with a true challenge.

when he finally made it to the pros, he folded under the pressure. I just hope he can get his s**t together.

after seeing those quotes i feel bad for him. us fans fail to see our players as humans and only want to see them produce on the football field or we hate instantly.

And I blame McCloughan more for this situation than Balmer.

People have said many times on this board that character and "off-the-field" problems with this team didn't bother them. Consistently thats proving to be a real issue with this team. Coffee retires because his hearts not in it and we've had this fiasco with Balmer as well.

When it was explained to us that the Vikings sent receiver Percy Harvin a five-day letter in order to secure a roster exemption and when we paired that up with the report that the 49ers have secured a roster exemption following the decision of defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer to go AWOL from San Fran's camp, we surmised that the Niners had sent the five-day letter to Balmer, too.

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that the letter was sent Wednesday, the day on which Balmer failed to return after a two-day excused absence. The move means that Balmer has until Monday to show up.

If Balmer fails to return, the Niners aren't required to put him on the reserve/left squad list, which would shut him down for all of the 2010 season.

I hope things workout for Balmer. I wish him the best.

I guess he looked like crap in practice, but he always looked solid in games to me.

I am really surprised that teammates would razz him about being a "bust". That is really stupid of them. It shows immaturity.

Maybe it was RJF. After all, he was in competition with him, and for all practical purposes, we can just pretend RJF was the first round pick and Balmer was the 7th.

RJF is doing everything we could have expected out of Balmer. RJF is a stud, he played amazing against the Colts. He is another late round gem, we are lucky to have him. I wouldn't be surprised if he actually challenged Franklin for the starting job this year.

The Bills give Aaron Maybin a hard time about his first round money.

True, but regardless of the 49ers players teasing him, Balmer was the one who "threw in the towel." Most players would turn it around and use it as motivatation, Balmer didn't. He folded under pressure.

Balmer had a poor camp before he left the team, and he also struggled mightily with off-the-field issues, teammates told La Canfora. The defensive lineman is coping with family issues and has several immediate family members in distressed situations. Balmer also is a prominent figure in an NCAA investigation into improper actions by agents, but that isn't believed to have contributed to his absence from the 49ers.

Balmer received reps with the third team, yet he still failed to produce against that inferior competition, according to sources.

"He has a lot going on right now, and it all sort of piled up on him," one teammate said. "But it's like he just folded under the pressure."

Balmer was razzed by teammates about being a first-round bust, but rather than use it as motivation, he buckled, the teammate said.

"It seemed like he had very low self esteem," the teammate said. "It was like he just can't take the joke."

I found the bold a little suprising... but at the same time, not so much

I have really changed my view on football players since the old days when many players found duuh was a bit much and knuckle dragging apes was a close approximation. Most modern nfl types are pretty impressive. That said I think guys like Balmer are not mature enough to be an nfl player. At this point and from what I saw of Tukuafu, I prefer the youngster. He showed more in this one game then Balmer ever has. I think Balmer has worn out his welcome.
