Put it this way. In 10 years we will have heard/read 438,438,438,438 buts & ifs regarding Vernon Davis' potential. We're half way there already!

Right now even ex 9er and New England fixture Ben Coates is a better TE than Davis. Even that guy that Carolina got from us in the expansion draft was better. Sorry but for the life of me I cannot remember his name.
This is not in any way a knock against Vernon, but we lost some pretty solid talent at the TE position during BJ's career with us. I think that Duke will become a solid option but that's as long as the Line can hold its own better. Until then we will see Duke being held back to block rather than going out and earning his keep as our 6th overall pick. That unfortunately is where we are at.

Let's not blame the oline. Everyone knows Mike Martz doesn't use TE's. That's why he blocked more last year. Not becasue of the oline. In 07 he was the 9th most targeted TE in the league. Can't keep using the Oline for an excuse.

VD isn't even the best TE on our roster now.

Based on what he's done VD doesn't compare remotely to Jones. For that matter, VD doesn't compare well to many former Niner TE's. We all know he has 'potential', but until that potential is reached he doesn't deserve to be compared to former greats.

Brent vs. Vernon? Vernon isn't even close. That's like comparing Craig to Barlow.

In 10 years, the best 49er TE of all-time will be Oklahoma TE Jermaine Gresham.
