Michael Lewis (asks for release)

Brandon Jones, quit, he is up in Seattle with Kentwan Balmer that other quitter. Jones is pretty average, but Balmer is making some plays. Neither one is a great player but both quit in Dingleberry.

Lewis not really a stelar cover guy but stout against the run, wants out. Crabtree won't practice in the preseason, and doesn't seem to work hard on game day, as a lot of Smith supporters point out in another thread hear in the zone.

How many other players are "mailing it in"?

We all know that Singletary is not an astute X and O coach, other than his work with Vernon DAvis, I am starting to doubt his motivational skill!
Move over Antonio Langham to make room for one of my least favorite 49ers ever -- Michael Lewis.
I don't think Lewis is ANY loss on the field, but the way that this went down speaks VOLUMES about the lack of respect that Singletary is achieving as a coach.

This needs its own thread.... It is a big deal and not a general conversation about M. Lewis.

Well I don't know what to say anymore. This team is in disarray. Lewis wants out, Coffee retires, and Balmer quits on us. Raye fired. Scotty Mcdrunk fired, , ST coach fired, OL coach fired, Nolan Fired, Martz Fired, Hostler fired, Erickson Fired, TO wants out, Garcia cut...

This is getting ridiculous.

We are the most pathetic franchise in the last 4 years...BAR NONE....
Can anyone add to this list of incompetence for me?

This is what the webzone wants...bet you can find multiple threads asking for each of those things to happen (miunus the quitting, but people who wanted those players gone)

Yeah people on this board probably can run a better front then the Yorks. We would never have hired/drafted some of these bafoons.

Coffee was drafted way before his time and most wanted Deshan Jackson over Balmer. These guys were overrated and when it showed on the field and got benched, they couldn't handle it.

Lewis was a good vet and we didn't treat him right obviously. One person told him he is the starter and other said he was benched and another said his time was getting cut.

We are a f**ked up organization.

Lots of people are saying 'good riddance", "he sucks", and "he's just being selfish". But he is throwing away $100,000 per game. Would YOU walk away from $100,000/week unless there was something seriously wrong? Lewis lost his staring job in Philly without walking away. In fact he used his free agency the next year to land the biggest contract of his life!

Put yourself in Lewis' situation: Your boss calls you in a week before the start of the season. He says, "You know that $3.8 million dollars we owe you this year? That's too much! We still like you and we still want you here as our starter; but you and I both know we've drafted your replacement. So you give up $2.1 million and we'll give you $400,000 guaranteed as a bonus, we'll let you remain the starter. Then next year we'll void your contract so you can have the best chance to get a fresh start. Otherwise, we'll just cut you now, and you'll sit on your couch a few weeks before signing for the vet minimum."

My guess? You'll feel bitterly stung, but the reality of the last sentence will sink in, and you'll take the deal.

Then, at the first sign of trouble, reports appear in the press that seem like they probably came from your boss' boss saying you're going to be benched. When asked about it by reporters your boss doesn't deny it. So you confront him. He assures you it's not true and he goes back to the reporters and issues a denial. Then 2 days later, he calls you in and tells you that technically he told you the truth because you'll be on he field for the first play, but that after that he'll be working in your replacement. He says he respects you and wants you to act as a mentor. Would YOU feel respected?!

Once again, how would you react? Would your being angry merely be a sign of selfishness?

What's alarming is that Lewis was a clubhouse leader respected by his teammates. Along with Michael Robinson this is the second clubhouse leader unceremoniously dumped. Teams usually only do that if there's a big problem in the clubhouse and the coach feels he's losing the team! Or that he's never had the team and getting rid of the negative influences is the only way to turn that around! Either way, it's a bad sign for the state of the team.

I'm not surprised Matt Barrows said this was the lowest point he's seen the team in the 10 years he's been covering them!

Solid breakdown. I related the same idea a couple of days ago in saying that this team needs to get rid of Singletary as soon as possible, not for wins and losses, but for the systematic meltdown of a functional system.

The system is broken, and the starting point is dumping the head coach and looking for someone with experience to take over the reigns in 2011.

So here's why I disagree. If you dump Sing now, who do you put as HC? Probably Manusky. Mike Johnson is out of the question, probably not Solari. So Manusky. Say he comes in and looses in Philli. Good team, first week coaching, it's forgiven, but we're 0-5. Then we have a turn around after him. We don't win the next 11, but we do win 7 of them. With the schedule, and a little luck, plus the rejuvenated moral, this is very possible. So we're still at a useless 7-9. No playoffs, and no high draft pick for a QB. So do you now fire the guy who won 7 out of 11 games for you? Hard to do. So the. Jed is again forced to name Manusky coach, as players are now excited about his dynamic personality, and the supposed "turnaround." This is the Singletary story all over again. Again we're stuck with the same general coaching staff, maybe another OC, and another coach who doesn't know offenses or QBs. Let Sing ride this out, get a high draft pick, bring in Locker as our QB of the future, and a young, bright offensive mind. Personally I've been a huge fan of Chris Peterson, as I think he's the best Offensive mind in all of football. Just an excellent excellent coach. As for an experienced coach, whose out of a job, how often do those guys succeed in a 2nd go-round. Who are your coaching preferences?
Taylor Mays is twice as badass as this guy.

Good riddance.

We need to weed out the punks now
T. Mays made the coaching staff decision look smart. Bye Michael "liability in coverage" Lewis...

I agree. True blessing in disguise. Mays needs to work on wrapping up when tackling and on coverage skills, but good overall.

Singletary has been very good with personnel decision...well...all except for the most important...QB.

That's like Apple having the right employees, except no Steve Jobs.
MLew sucked anyways ... hope he enjoys watching games from home.
Couple of teams need some safety help this week. I hope that we can get some value for him...
