Probably knew that they would release him and knowing him and how long he's been her he doesn't want to leave (at least for this year). Definitely his last year here.

Probably his last year anywhere if he goes down to another concussion. He sees the writing on the wall, is a team player and probably wants to ensure that he's able to finish up his career this year w/o worry. What better way to achieve this goal than do like Smith did and offer to take the cut in salary, when you know that's the only way to stay on the team.

Cause when it comes right down to it he was going to be playing for more money, has an injury history that could put him on the sidelines for an extended period of time and we have two guys that could take his place and don't have the history of concussions that he has. The concussions put him on the bubble in this scenario and he just leveled the playing field.

I applaud this move.

I think it may have been mainly due to his concussions... Is there a contentiously plan for these players who get several concussions due to laying the lumber? Some sort of compensation package?
good dude

I've always liked Michael Lewis. I wish more athletes could demonstrate what Lewis has with this gesture.

Why? So the Yorks can have a few extra millions to spend on Fendy bags and private jets? It's not like the fans get any discount or the money is distributed to the 3rd string players. And we dont even have a cap problem.

My response probably sounds hostile, but its not. I'm just one of those guys thats really pro player. Football is nothing like baseball, soccer or basketball, it is a very dangerous and physically taxing sport.

It does sound hostile because hopefully the money saved here can help sign players like V Davis , Franklin , Dashon Goldson or others.

I hear yeah, but when are we actually planning on signing these guys?

I would like to see, VD, Lawson and Goldson signed this year. In that order of priority.

I will be starting the sign Lawson campaigne shortly.

I honestly doubt that... he will be the starter at least for week one and probably half way through the season. I don't think they had plans to release him now but after next year no matter what they would have with him making 5.7 and 6.7 the two years after this. I assume this means no dead money for the next two years and frees more room for those 14 free agents next year. Also, saves us 2.45 this year.... that we wouldn't need but can put towards next year's free agents.

Then in Lewis' case why not say "hell no" I need that money bc he has fulfilled his contract obligations and has that right to say No. Its like Alex's situation...if he didn't take a pay-cut he was gone. Niners knew Lewis is replaceable (with Mays looming) and wasn't worth that money, so he either take a cut or get cut!!! Doesn't make sense to pay someone 4 mil to only play for "at least for week one and probably half way through the season". Don't be so naive my friend...its a business first!!!
