People are going to absolutely laugh at this comment - but I honestly feel like we should have never let JTO go. Granted he turned the ball over more than a drunken Kerry "Vodka" Collins, but the fact remains that he would still be the only QB on our roster with the arm strength to attack all levels of the field and the quick release to prevent defenders from being able to jump routes.
Even if he would not be awarded a shot at the starting job, I still feel that he provided more upside than Damon Huard... Afterall, he is still the only 49er to throw for over 300 yards in close to a decade.
And who knows - maybe operating out of a more conservative offense than Martz's scheme is just what he needed to hold onto the ball and put it all together. I personally feel that reducing the number of 7-step drops that he was taking would have done wonders for his turnover ratio... but we will never know.
BASH AWAY IF YOU WILL - but I stand by my convictions... In actuality, we are only a Shaun Hill half-time plea away from this being a reality.

Eh we are just going to have to wait another week to start making our own judgements. i could easily see it taking an extra second to make the longer throws.

no bash needed..... J.T. only threw for over 300 yards one time for us last year (against the SeaChickens).... Shaun Hill did it as well..(against the Cowboys) and the third highest was set by Shaun Hill with 285 yards against the Jets...which we kind of played conservative towards the end.....he would've had more.
oh Rattay threw for 417 yards back in 2005....
but yards don't mean much...its the execution...and that is why you see Hill having many 100+ QB ratings last year.
also I believe Huard has done better as a starter than J.T.O. in their careers.

shaun hill is going to have gore slaughtered.. half his throws are to rbs .. and with a run oriented offense this poses a big threat to gore.. hill needs to grow some balls and take more shots down-field.. if he's too much of a puss to do it in practice theres no way he's gunna do it in a game..

WOW - my lack of research is appauling... I vividly remember all three of those other passing games.
I still feel the same regarding JTO though since my assessment is based on the idea that Raye's system would mitigate his turnover issues... not looking to start a debate over it. Just wanted to see if anyone had similar sentiments.

Hmm, this is a little troubling. Smith's taking almost DOUBLE the time to get rid of the ball.
The only explanation or reason for this would be Smith is throwing deeper passes therefore they naturally take longer to get rid of.
I want to see the timing of passes from BOTH QBs on short AND long passes.
If Smith is taking 3-4 seconds to get rid of the ball on a little dink and dunk passes then forget it.
Interesting stuff.
3, 5, 4, and 4 seconds? It has already been written that we are not practicing as much 7 step drops, which means Smith IS holding on to the ball too long. Either that or the ONLY plays he's getting are 7 step drops and Hill is getting everything else.
Like I said, wait until the real pass rush comes at Smith. The guy has all of the physical tools EXCEPT for the most important one: vision and quick release.
Another stupid article by Lynch.
Way to go and judge by a sample of 3. It doesn't say how long the throws went for or whether or not they were in the shotgun. Which is the most IMPORTANT thing in analyzing this statistic. And plus, i doubt those times are anywhere NEAR accurate.
FYI, it's 3.5, 4 and 4.

Watching this vid, seems like Smith worked on his footwork, good job.
LOL in this video Smith is making a bunch of super quick throws and Shaun Hill made a throw that took him 3 sec.....
Thanks Kevin Lynch for your completely biased reporting.

Is it just me, or are they not even giving Hill the throws downfield? We know Hilll doesn't have the "cannon" that Smith has, but Smith is simply completing 30-40 yard passes, which I know Hill is capable of, very comfortably. I do not quite understand this. They need to give both quarterbacks the same throws.
Although maybe they are using the same plays, and Hill is just not taking attempts downfield....

I still think Hill will have to play bad for Smith to start the season

It's you, Hill cannot comfortably throw a 30-40 yard pass, He can throw it but not comfortably, but it's good that he knows his limits because then he does not go off throwin 50 yard bombs that would be intercepted.

3.5? My bad. I do agree that the reporting could be selective reporting and we will have to see.
I think one of the Matts should keep track of QB time on their next report. Whichever one reports that will have many hits on their site.

Me to. It seems that (Alex & Shaun) are just playing to their strengths. Learning more per practice. I can't careless about their pasts & see that both these catz R good to go.

Shaun said it: They are working on execution on less plays rather than just trying to get 1 million plays out there.

go look at gore's stats after hill took over for the season.
His receptions per game went down DRASTICALLY. He would be getting one catch per game, for like 5-6 yards. Go look at your s**t before posting bulls**t around here.
