That was why Singletary almost pulled Hill out of that game - and that wasn't the only game that he played that way.
Smith does have problems too, so I am not saying that he is the one that will win this competition, however let's not put on rose colored glasses for Hill, or assume that his only flaw is a "noodle arm".
Watch that Cardinals game-highlight if you want to truly see Hill's streakiness.
People forget he threw a ton of INT's in that game that were called back because of Arizona penalties. He led us back and made it a contest, but he was also the reason we got in the hole in the first place.
Yeah i guess it could be a cause for concern.
It actually happened twice last year. Once in the away AZ game and again in the away St. Louis game. To Hill's credit, he did manage to claw his way back into both of them.

He did crawl back. Personally I think it's not how you start it's how you finish.
At the same time I get the feeling Hill wouldn't make it the entire season without being "figured out."

And yes completely agreed with Method, it actually seems like a real quarterback competition is going on.

LMAO, at this being like Star Wars and Alex needs to pass the final test to become a Jedi.

1. Hill, Smith, Huard (White?)
2. Hill, Garcia, Huard, (White?)
3. Hill, Smith, rookie (White or other rookie)
4. Hill, Garcia, rookie. (White or other rookie)
----------------------------------------------------------
Looks like Matt has enough sense to know that Hill is the starter and that Alex (if he stays) will be a backup at best.
Yeah, but last year we all thought Hill was starting also. History has shown that these coaches can't decide on their QB. Let's hope Singletary changes this. I have a feeling that unless a QB blows him out of the water, he is not changing Hill's status.
I agree. At least when Martz was here, he knew who his QB would be, regardless of how it ended up to be.
For a new HC, you would think the first thing that would be taken care of is the QB position. But now I'm coming to the conclusion that if Sanchez or Stafford is there at #10 one of them will be our starter.
But then again, you would name your starter right away even if a rookie was drafted. That way if he beats your crowned king, it only makes you and your staff look that much better. And if your crowned king does end up starting the season, it would show you made the right decision with him.
I am comfortable with how Singletary makes his decisions. Martz did know who his QB was going to be but his problem was that he didn't know when he should have changed his QB and Nolan didn't have a spine to do anything.
I will be very comfortable if Hill starts with Singletary because Singletary has already shown he won't settle for crap play and pull Hill if needed.
Very true, which chaps my ass, as to why Singletary hasn't named Hill the starter. After all wouldn't you go into the season with the QB that pretty much adds to the reason that he is our HC??
it seems like alot of hill supporters are afraid of hill even having to compete for the job...dont they have more confidence in their boy
I was just saying, Hill was one of the main reason's Singletary has the HC title. Am I afraid of Hill getting into a QB competition, why should I be?? May the best man win, I just want to go to the playoffs. But the point that I was trying to make was, Hill was or is something to build off of from last year....continuity that's all.

I'm almost positive the coaching staff will eventually go with Smith, because let's face it, they know what they have with Hill, they know his strengths, they know his ceiling. If Smith sucks, then all they have to do is pull him, and it's Hill for good after that, he's not going anywhere.
On the other hand, they DON'T know what they have in Smith. He could be a bust, but he could be a superstar ready to break out finally. All they know is that he got better and better toward the end of the 2006 season, and in 2007 and 2008 he got hurt. (It's pretty obvious they don't think Smith is retarded and stupid and a bust-hole like so many people here do) Now, he looks good, better than he ever has and might be, just might be, the QB they thought they were drafting in 2005, and he's only 25.
Start Hill, and Hill will most likely be the starter for quite a long time, and Smith will eventually end up somewhere else, barring injury. If he does, and turns out to be a really good QB, then how stupid will the 49ers look for not giving him the chance to start? That's a stain that never goes away.
Start Smith, and if he's not very good, then pull him and put in Hill who we know is good. I can almost assure you this is the thinking behind the 49ers brass.. But then again, it will be hard to explain why Smith is starting if he really screws it up during the preseason games and Hill does not. But if they perform about the same, I expect Smith will get the nod.

I'm with ya on this, but if Smith can win this thing(not saying he will,I make no claims of foresightedness unlike some),wouldn't it be better for the sake of continuity to have the younger guy at the helm?

I don't think any 49er supporter is afraid of Hill competing, that assumption is ridiculous. I do find it funny however that Smith supporters’ were adamant that any competition to smith would destroy his confidence. That somehow Smith “needed” to know unequivocally that the team was behind him. It’s more funny hmmmm

,,, than funny haha

.
Hill deserves to start because he played well and led the team emotionally as well as to tangible victories last season – period, end of discussion. Smith is a decent looking “in practice” check cashing chump. And for all of Hill’s supposed weaknesses, smith is still not exceedingly better than him in any respect, especially on game days.
Smith is indeed good enough to run the scouting team for Thursday “practices” during the season. But right now Hill is the man for Sundays!!! Unless Hill is beaten outright by another QB,,, Hill has earned the right to believe that the organization is behind him… Hill deserves a little loyalty for a job well done last season even from Smith loyalist types who put players, jersey purchases and speculation before team.

Yeah where the opposition is really trying to touch the QB and a quick accurate release rules.

If Smith wasn't coming off a serious injury and going on his 5th or 6th OC, than I might say so. But the fact that we ended the season with back to back wins is something to build off of. I just see it as, if it ain't broke why fix it.

From all accounts Smith is over the injury, and if his improved play continues into preseason,he is a definite upgrade over Hill.Being able to stretch the field will make it easier for Gore to run free, and open up the underneath stuff.I am just worried that Hill will never be better than what we saw last year, and some of what we saw last year was scary bad(AZ and St Louis). The truth is neither of these QB's have done much to make me think that either should have the job handed to them.Even the most ardent supporter of either is ignorant if they think that either has earned the job yet. What I want out of our QB's is consistency, last year Hill would look good one game and at other times looked completely lost, and we all know about Smiths struggles.Whoever wins out,it looks like will have better talent to work with than at any point since the Garcia/TO/Hearst days.I just want for the team to be able to spend the top draft picks next year on Eric Berry and a RT that we will probably need, and not on a QB unless absolutely necessary.
