Watching Hill, it seems that he almost never sets his feet or steps into his throws when he passes. Which could also be a cause for floating passes or lack of zip on passes.

In my opinion both men are about even so far in training camp. seems like hill has beat that gamer mentality and doing good things, and smith has showed no holding back on doing what he does best in stretching the field with the long throws.

This is just training camp and it doesnt matter if they both go perfect for every pass thrown, it does come down to how they do in pre-season games. However, if smith translates these same long throws in an actual game then it´s my opinion to those that like it or not that they will go with smith, because hill hasnt done any more than he can already do, and smith brings that element of being to stretch the field more often with precision and a tight spiral, as well as another aspect he has improved on, which is getting the ball out when there´s blown coverage, or even tight for that matter. Earlier Sing, chewed out Davis for a ball that smith threw that sing said he should of caught.

I dont know about you, but this is the first time im actually excited about a real competition.

You werent intrigued by last year's competition???

This yr is a team camp!
Last yr was the jto show, with made up injuries to hill and a true injury to smith. I personally am much happier with this one! Awe his throwing shoulder was sore! He threw like 20 passes he is a qb. Nolan sucked balls at what he did here. He wasn't even good at it, jed let em go
ooh oooh ha ha

Yes but most of the time, the ball gets where it needs to be.

Honestly, it seems like Alex Smith is doing damn well in TC and better than ever...but I cannot buy into his accuracy and "strong arm" until I see it against live bullets and in not so perfect pockets. If he continues it in real games, then I'm all for him.

Oh no I agree, all I'm saying is that maybe his arm-strength would improve a little if he did calm down and set his feet. It just seems he does a lot of pitter patter (happy feet) with his feet that he forgets all about footwork.
From Miaocco...

I crunched the numbers through six practices. Shaun Hill has completed 39 of 51 passes (76.5 percent) in 11-on-11 drills, while Alex Smith has connected on 40 of 53 passes (75.5 percent).

This morning, Hill completed 7 of 8, while Smith completed 8 of 10. It breaks down like this:

Under-10 yards: Hill 6 of 7, Smith 6 of 7.

Between 10-20 yards: Hill 1 of 1, Smith 0 of 1.

Over 20 yards: Smith 2 of 2, Hill 0 of 0.
I can't wait to see our guys against other teams defenses,it seems that they have both stepped it up.If these numbers aren't purely the result of no pass rush,we could be stacked at QB.This competition can only make the team better.

QUARTERBACK DUEL: Could this contest play out just the way it did during organized team activity practices? Over those workouts, Hill looked better in the early part of the spring. Then Alex Smith gradually took hold and finished up as the superior player. Early in camp, Hill has the lead in my view. He's getting rid of the ball fast, reading the defense quickly, and leading his receivers well.

However, Smith is excelling with the deep passing game. He did so Tuesday with a 40-yard spiral that hit Isaac Bruce in stride, a pass so pretty it would bring tears to your eyes. Smith said he just couldn't make that throw last summer. However, on the short and medium passes, Smith frequently shows a halting insecurity. Even on seven-on-seven drills, which are drills without a pass rush, Smith often takes a long time finding a receiver. You can almost see him straining through his progressions. Hill also throws a far more catchable ball, probably because he doesn't throw it nearly as hard. On Tuesday morning, Vernon Davis, Glen Coffee and Delanie Walker all made one-handed grabs off of Hill's throws.

This Kevin Lynch's blog right.............?

The bold sounds about right. Not much to a deep ball but a lot of trust and quick thinking involved with the shorter routes in more traffic. Looks like Alex just doesn't have the vision.

Hmm that is troubling. Hopefully he gets better with that.

That said, those are some strong words to use though ("straining through progressions, halting insecurity...") etc...wouldnt the Matt's have mentioned something?

I think one of the Matts wrote that Singletary yelled out to Alex to gid rid of the ball quicker as it would have been a sack. Same old Alex, hurt shoulder or not, his vision just isn't there.
