Hill and Smith will be neck and neck during training camp, I wouldn't expect either one to gain the lead. During Preseason is what will separate the two.

Well at least the int is off a deflection and not an errant throw. First int of camp?

No... I think Smith threw one previously, while Hill threw three...

I wouldn't worry about INT's too much in TC, that's where QB's are supposed to make mistakes, and learn from.
Per Maiocco's blog

"Smith had an interception when blitzing defensive back Marcus Hudson got his hands on a pass at the line of scrimmage and outside linebacker Jay Moore gathered it in. After that interception, Smith completed his final 10 pass attempts of the day."

Hopefully, he can show that same grit on gameday!

Geez, I have a feeling this QB competition is just beginning to heat up... I hate to say it, but in the words of T.O., "Get your popcorn ready!" I really think we're going to see a much improved Alex Smith this season! He seems more focused than ever before and his shoulder looks to be doing great.

Thats great news. Whether Alex starts or not, any 49er fan should be happy reading this. Seems like Smith's getting some moxy.

Seriously.

If Alex can just get it together, it solves a LOT of problems.

I am really pleased with the news I am hearing about the QB's performances in TC so far. I just hope it carries over to the regular season and beyond. Bring home the Lambardi trophy Hill/Smith. May the best man win and bring back the winning tradition to SF

This has probably been covered, but will Hill's inability to go long cause the DB's to gamble and play up so that opposing defenses will be shutting down Hill's short passing game and the running game.

We need to move the chains and I love the short passing game, but it seems to me you have keep at least a strong medium range option to keep the DB's honest and out of your hair.

What say ye?

I think that all this talk about Hill's arm strength has been overblow. Sure he isn't going to be throwing 60 yard bombs but i think his arm strength is good enough that it isn't going to significantly impede the playbook.

Agreed.

Same for Smith. People act like he somehow is unable to throw short or medium.

Both of these guys can make the throws. Smith may have a better long ball but at the end of the day its about wins.

We just need a QB that can stay healthy and get the job done without committing too many careless mistakes. Honestly, we're not going to be scoring points with our passing game. Our offense and scoring will rely on Gore so as long as you have a QB that can manage the game and make plays when necessary, then we'll be fine.

It's not the playbook that's the issue, it's the anticipation of the defense. The only team that got to study up on Hill picked him off three times and lost by one.
