I'm very encouaged by how this QB competition is coming along. Alex's shoulder appears to be back, add that to his renewed focus, and I actually think this is Alex Smith's job to lose!

I also agree that its Alex's job to loose. Careful with this remarks you might get flamed for them.

I found one of the headlines about Alex funny. It reads Alex walks the line between love and hate. He really does not walk a fine line. The fans reaction is a reflection of his performance. If Alex comes out and performs well, fans will cheer him on. If he stinks it up he will get booed. I am not comparing talent level or how they play but Rex Grossman was facing similar fan reactions in Chicago. Alex has less of a rope when it comes to his performance because he has been around for a couple of years, whether this is fair or not.

I agree, how can it not be, and i mean if and only if he exudes the same traits as hill. i love it when people talk about attention to the huddle and all this mess that hill has. honestly in 06 the team followed behind alex, and i honestly feel that the entire team will follow whomever is at qb until the competition is won.

Either way go alex and hill, and i gotta say they are making it a "true competition", unlike the one McNutz tried to fix.

epic fail

Dude, are you kidding me? Are you seriously gonna defend Smith's epic failures in 2006 with "kwame harris"? I understand that Harris was caught for holding quite a few times, but he wasn't a cause for our failures. Go back and you will see that none of his big "holds" were in close games that we lost.....

16-16 tds-int, 3000 yards, added 3 W's to the win column from the year before. That's not an epic fail in any way.

Yeah if you're gonna call that an epic fail, you were setting yourself up for disappointment from the get go.

Ummm.....I didn't say that Smith's performance in 2006 was an "epic fail".

The epic fail comment came from old dude replying to my comment in our debate about kwame harris being a big part of our failures in 2006...

Kwame pretty much costed us the first game at Arizona (holding on an Antonio Bryant TD-catch), so that's one W right there that would have put us at 8-8.

What else from that year? How about...

• Vernon Davis missing half the season due to injury?
• A-Bryant getting suspended for the final two games of the season?
• Nolan kicking a FG in St. Louis on 4th and an inch?
• Mo Hicks fumbling problem?
• A defense featuring Sammy Davis at CB?

Ahhh that td pass to Bryant was nice. 52 yard td pass negated by a holding call. Smith would have had a 340 yard 2 td 0 int day but most importantly we would have won.

Sigh..

Lambda, bro. Why do you have to depress this brother over here? What could have been, what could have been...

I really hope Smith earns this job so we don't have to draft another QB, being simply a One-round-and-out team at best, with Hill at the helm for several years. Because that, in all honesty, is what we're looking at if Smith can't get it done.
Im not one to jump to conclusions or anything but it seems like both Hill AND Smith are doing equally well.

That being said, this is Hills job to lose. I mean honestly, just being fair, Alex needs to really shine in these practices. Its great he's doing "better than before" and doing well, etc etc but he needs to put Hill away if he wants to start. Hill is the proven winner on the field so as long as he does OK in TC...he should start.

I know its just the 3rd day of practice but bottom line: If Smith doesnt go above and beyond "good and solid..." he's not going to start...and shouldnt start IMO.

Preseason...should decide once & for all....hopefully. Both catz aren't putting each other away.

Honestly, I think it's all about the live games. I don't think Singletary will be impressed if Smith plays well in practices because it's not live and I don't think he will get discouraged if Hill doesn't practice well because he's a "gamer".

It's going to be all about the preseason games and we all know Nolan is coming out swinging on the 14th so it will be a good test for whomever starts. I have a feeling Nolan will come out even more tricky if Smith starts just to do the same he did with Rogers.

If Smith starts against Denver and doesn't play well, then I don't think I would count it against him because of Nolan's caniving arse.

While Nolan may conive against the Niners because he thinks he knows the personnel and tendencies, I can also imagine that our 9er defensive team just might, and I mean, just might, be a bit inclined to show Nowin some of the frustration of the previous focus on the Big Sub and other formations that showed the passive nature (don't lose) of Nowin versus the aggressive nature (win!) of coach Singletary.

This will be great to watch...

Yeah, we will be trying to practice while Nolan will be trying to make our QBs look bad and not try and work on his defenses' weaknesses. I don't think Singletary plays that dumb game.

Sounds like Hill is starting to look good in practice. Bad news for Smith.
Good day for 49ers QBs. Shaun Hill completed 16 of 20, while Alex Smith connected on 14 of 18. Smith threw an INT off a deflection.

Do you think in the Broncos Preseason game that Nolan is going to try to make Alex look stupid the way he did to Aaron Rodgers last year in the Preseason? (hence exotic Blitzes)

funny how he would blitz in preseason and not during the season.
