...But,get back to me in 3 or 4 more years(what Smith has had to show his stuff) and I may be talking about what a flop Davis has been, who knows. I hope not and we all had better hope not because right now Davis is our best hope for the future.

My money is on Alex Smith earning back his starting QB job by the end of this season. I think he will be more focused this year and finally live up to the potential that made him the first overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft.

As far as I am concerned this is Smith's first real chance on a decent team to show what he can do,2006 was not bad considering the crappy team we had at the time, but this years team is undeniably better.I think most of Smiths problems had to do with the way he was developed by the former coaching staff.Smith has showed some play making ability in his limited time playing(he has not played for 3-4 years as a previous poster has claimed). He missed all of last season and all but 3 games of the season before(I do not count the post injury games,he had no business being in there).I am not saying Smith should be handed the starting job,but if he earns it back,I do not see how any niner fan could keep bashing the guy.It is sad how many people talk trash about the guy even though he is a niner at heart. If this were not true,he would have left for greener pastures instead of sticking with the team that he wants to be with.

I agree 100%!!!

His OL will be stronger and more unified than before
His WR squad is much more skilled with depth
His OC will call plays to suit his style and the personnel at the time
His OC will heavily use Davis as an outlet valve a la Brent Jones, JMO
His RB and FB are the same from 2006

IMO, the single most important part of this equation for his success is the increase in talent on the WR squad. No more dropsies a la D Jax. I am looking forward to his further development. Just in the OTAs and Minis you can see these guys catching everything under the sun especially extending those arms and hands only at the last moment to catch the ball.

I just don't see anyway we can lose. If Smith beats out Hill, then the more athletic and talented kid won the job and about time. If Hill wins, we already have a QB who has proven he can win under pressure. You can't get anymore pressure than your HC wanting to pull you out and you prove to him you were right in staying because you won the frickin' game. Now that's a winner! Oh yea, and the running for a first w/o a helmet counts as well!!!

I love both of these cats and we will benefit from their competition!

I know some folks do not wanna hear this, but that year Battle led the team in dropped passes.
Which year, Memphis? You must be talking about 2007, as I thought Battle had one of the best (actually the best?) catch % in 2006?... but then had some surprising drops in the early/mid 2007?

I don't really understand what you're trying to say here....

if Alex is not the starter for game one....that means Shaun Hill beat him out...and Alex didn't prove himself.......also, I don't know how Alex would earn his job back at the end of the season....if anything it would mean Shaun hill struggled and Alex, by default (if he is the backup) would take over.....not really earning the starting job back.

I don't see this happening though....I feel Hill will have a great season this year......with a new type of offense.....OC working with Davis....Gore always ready....and WRs competing with each other....as well as Isaac Bruce leading by example and doing his part again helping converting those crucial 3rd and 7+......it should be fun watching this team with Shaun Hill back there spreading the ball around, letting the playmakers make plays.

but like every year it seems, I'm just worried about the Oline (although they played great and disciplined most of the time those final 8 games under Singletary)
Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill!
Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill!

Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill!
Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill!Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill! Shaun Hill!

Ok... No more need to argue about this!

I'm saying that I am not sure who will be our starting QB at the start of this season? However; if Shaun Hill is he starting QB, at some point I do expect Alex Smith to be the starter. (whether it be due to injury or poor play) My belief is that once Alex has his oppertunity, he will show a drastic improvement and earn back his starting job. I think we will see a new Alex Smith in 2009.

The smart money is on Shaun Hill, but the even smarter money is that Alex Smith will be called upon sometime this year to make a start. I hope the competition brings out the best in both of them.

My money is on Shaun Hill going o-fer AT the Cards, AT the Vikes, vs. Falcons, AT the Texans, AT the Colts, vs the Titans, AT the Packers, vs the Jags and AT the Eagles.

All playoff teams except the Texans who just missed it and the Jags, but they are in the toughest division in football. Hill has not faced that kind of competition yet.
