lol. Yeah, that's the guy.

I don't want anyone to get me wrong on this - I think the intangibles are more important. I just think it's very interesting in this case where one guy's got a bunch of one thing and the other guy's got a bunch of the other.

I agree. Again, the reason I find this competition interesting is that Smith has all the physical tools and Hill has all the intangibles. I don't think I've ever seen such a stark comparison that makes that much sense between two QB's.

So if you had to pick physical tools(bigger arm, bigger guy, faster guy), or intangibles(ability to lead the team, ability to win games), which one would you honestly pick?

I'd pick the intangibles in a heartbeat.

Like I already said, at this point, I'd feel more comfortable with Hill starting because the intangibles are more important to me than the physical tools. I'm just not one of these guys who's down on Smith.

I agree. I'm not down on Smith, and would support either of them as the starter.

However, Smith has previously disappointed, so I wouldn't object to him being brought along slowly.
alex smith.

I am all for who gets the job done, but the team has come a long way since Smith has been gone. To be a great QB in the NFL you need a great line in front of you. Smith wasn't behind the line last year. Hill was. I think Hill will start, but Smith will come in and be impressive after Hill gets hurt.

Or lets just say if Shaun Hill struggles. I don't like to wish injuries on anyone!
It will be interesting to see the competition unfold. Last season j.t. and alex had scored the same amount of points when running the offense. Alex was running with 3rd stringers most of the games. I dont care who wins it but would love to once again have a qb that can win a game for you instead of just manage it all the time.

I doubt that he was saying he wished injury to Hill, if that's how you took it. Just that at some point, an injury is a likely thing to happen. Aside from Alex's 2006 season of taking every snap, we have not had a QB remain healthy all season long in quite some time.

Oh I know. I just don't like it when injuries are even mentioned. It could bring bad luck! That's all I'm trying to say.
Alex Smith is easily the most talented QB on the roster, it is all about his mental maturity at the moment. If Alex has the confidence in himself he will destroy Defenses, if he doesnt , well than Shaun Hill will be our Qb.

Well,as far as physical talent goes...Davis is clearly,by far,the best talent on the team at QB. Alex would be next IF he could overcome his many ,many faults (slow delievery and slow decision making and inaccurate passes and inability to read defenses or to make something out of a broken play instead of just throwing the ball out of bounds, etc etc etc ). So I agree that for alex, who should be much more advanced at this stage of his career, that it ios mostly mental. Sometimes players learn and advance and sometimes they never overcome thsir natural tendencies (slowness of decision etc etc ).

Right now Hill is clearly the most ready to play NFL caliber football, then Huard (much more proven than Alex ) and then Alex and then Davis. The way it stands right now,Davis and Alex are both unprepared and immature, except Davis is that way because he is a rookie, while Alex is that way because he doesn't ever seem to be able to overcome his natural shortcomings. (and Davis has a larger upside because of his greater raw skills over Alex and his greater potential when and if Davis does mature).

Maybe Alex will FINALLY show something different this year,I hope so. But until that huge change comes Hill is clearly a better QB and Davis is clearly a better long term prospect than Alex.

Our best hope is probably that Davis does indeed mature and reach his great potential and that Alex does improve a great deal and become good enough to be Davis' long term backup.

Or Davis becomes good enough to become Smiths backup for a long while.I am not really sold on Davis, looked him up on youtube to see some of his play and was not really impressed with what I saw, maybe he will get better though.

If Davis' skill set actually gets better then I guess we will have a pro bowl QB for a long time around here !!! (as long as he learns and matures aa expected.). We have seen Alex ,when healthy and playing his best and he is a known quantity. He would need to improve from that dramatically to become what Davis has the potential to become. Of course as I always say, potential is only potential until the player actually puts it into action. I wish the best for alex but he has not come close to showing any real NFL caliber QB play as yet. Maybe he will but there is a much greater chance that the rookie will develop than that alex will turn around from the flop he has been in games,so far.
I actually hope that both of them develop to their full potentials ! But as it stands now ,if I HAD to bet,I would put my money on the better prospect of the two and that is clearly Davis.
