O'Sullivan were losing them, his stature gets overblown, especially by 49er fans who love their quarterbacks.

You're welcome Jim!

I agree with you completely, Shaun Hill hasn't been spectacular AT ALL! I mean, yes, he won several games for us last season, including 5 out of our last 7, but was he impressive in those wins? I would have to say NO!!!

So clearly, I am all in favor of moving Hill straight to the bench, and giving the starting job to it's rightful owner, Alex Smith. I know he's been injured and hasn't played for 2 whole seasons, but he was our #1 overall pick and has the potential to be great!

Hill may have won us a few games, but if you wanna see some impressive football being played, then the job should go to Alex.

No man,the starter should be whoever wins the competition, neither of them has done enough to warrant the job being handed to them.

Oh, absolutely!

The starting job should be given to the player who plays best in slow, non-contact practices and preseason games against vanilla defenses with backup players.

Don't be scared about a lil competition... embrace it.

As soon as i found this i had to post it. Now for the record, it´s not a knock on shaun hill, but this quote was given from the football outsiders, and whether or not it holds water, well who cares. It just talks and adresses the issue that someone finally stepped up and said about the skewed 7-3 record as a starter and to the fans that say why he should be appointed the starter this season, just check it out.

Much has been made of Hill’s 7-3 record as the 49ers starter, but it is misguided enthusiasm. Two of his wins came against last year’s 2-14 Rams. Two more came against teams with nothing to play for, including the 2007 Buccaneers, who were actively resting all their players. That leaves Hill with a win over the Bengals in 2007 and victories over the Bills and Jets last year, in which the team scored a combined 54 points. Color us impressed.

Now as i said not a knock on him because he has won games for us, but because of 7-3 doesn´t mean he should start. This quote IMHO says why a qb comp with the no 1 pick is justifiable. Cause like it or not his winning record is not really saying much at all over a 4 yr period. and since you have those that say he has never started a season, well this isnt the time to say, because he hasnt, is why he should, know what i mean fellas. So i now agree when Sing says that hill and smith are on the same equal level now, and should make for a great TC.

Once again, go QB competition. :)

Referring to your quote, I don't know why people just don't get it... Shaun didn't get to choose who he played against. He went in and did his job regardless of the competition. The good thing about Shaun is that he helps us win the games that we should win. I cant say the same about the guys he's replaced (Dilfer. JTO)

Doing his job well. Which is more than you can say about the other QB's on our roster.

Not as of yet anyway. If he stays healthy, I give Alex Smith the edge over Shaun Hill for the starting QB job.

Yup, doing his job and doing it well... Don't get me wrong, I like the competition; however, I think it should be publicly stated that it's Hill's job to lose.

C'mon D it has been, remember Singletary said, the onus is on Smith to win the starting job from Hill.

Yeah, Sing has said just about all we need to hear when he said "yes, if the season started today Shaun would be the starter". I'd just like to hear them come out and officially say it instead of sticking with this whoever looks the best in Preseason line.

He said it in interviews with both Matts that Hill is the starter unless Smith beats him out. That's good enough for me,I think we will be fine no matter who the QB is this year personally. The talent surrounding the QB position this year is as good as it has been since the turn of the century.
Looking at his college #'s (9,000+ yds passing) I am excited about a Nate Davis possibly surfacing in the next couple of seasons. Niners Universe!!!!!!

My man D, oh i get it, but i dont think you really do my man. Look at my first words brotha. My writing was specifically catered to those that throw the 7-3 starter record in our face. And yes he has got the job done when called upon, but dont avoid the fact just like you said, when he´s called upon. Your words, "regardless of the competition." What i´m trying to say only last year was the first time he was in a so called competition, and if smith had not gotten hurt, he would of been third again, and believe it or not you´d have to agree. But like i said when we talk, lets not just use the specifics we want, lets look at the whole picture. He has never been appointed the starter for us, and lets be real, he was always the last one to be picked, after all the chips fell. I mean are you blind brotha to not see the reality in that. It´s the mindset of lets give all that we have on the roster that may have certain better abilities a shot, then if all else fails bring in hill, just like insiders pointed out with his winning record. Smith couldnt help that he got hurt, hill couldnt help when he got in, but that doesnt change the fact of how each of their football careers played out.

Then above all like most say, Hill saved us, and saved Sing´s job, he´s the reason this and he´s the reason that, and FACT, Hill has yet to be singled the starter by Sing. Saying, yeah if the season started today it would be hill, and smith has to beat hill out, doesn´t sound all that backing to me. If hill did such a great job as a lot of hill fans say then why at the end of the season wasn´t he named the starter. The football community on nfl network, both matts and a few other papers say the same thing, the team is giving smith a shot to see if he can win the job over. If you have a sure thing in Hill, then there is no need for a competition because your starter is proven. The insiders to me just pointed out some reasons that make a valid point, and you never know, Sing and the 9er organization may be saying the same thing, thats why he hasnt been appointed the starter. To me if i saved your job, have this boastful winning record, have the team backing me, then why am i second guessed. And we know Sing doesnt play or sugarcoat anything. He wants the best players on the field, and hill is good, but i guess from what he´s shown soo far it´s not what Sing considers best just yet. Starter by default isnt the same as saying Your our starter, IMHO. thats all im saying brotha:)

Damn dude, you act like it was your mom that wrote that article or something. I wasn't trying to offend you, I was just pointing out that the guy in the article was trying to discredit Hill for who he played against. It's like saying Jerry Rice would suck because he went to Mississippi Valley state (a s Jerry showed us, the logic doesn't add up). Correct me if I'm wrong but Hill did help us win the games we should have won last year (something we've missed with Dilfer, JTO, or even with some of Smiths games).

It will get heated up again once Training Camp begins!
