in Smith we have a QB who's been outperformed by 3rd stringers since his 1st year. Rattay, old Dilfer. Hill, JTO, Hill again..
Smith was given the starter job.. never earned it. I hear people always say "he improved so much his 2nd year" .... yeah when you go 9+games with 1 TD.. 7+tds your 2nd year would be a great improvement...
Huard: older version of Hill
Davis: looks ok. needs more time.
its clear we dont have Montana/Young anymore.. hell we dont have Garcia/Grback.. what we have are career backups competing with a 1st round bust.
i wouldn't mind seeing the 49ers bringing in an old vet to compete for the job.. shoulda gone after Vick, Favre, hell.. someone call Jake Plummer.. get the snake out of retirement! lol would rather see him compete with Hill to see were his talent level is really at.
hill has proved he can beat s**tty d's and lose to good ones...... tonight hill proved that he can hand the ball to coffee!

I would consider it a wash, since they both did not look that good. Nate looked pretty damn solid though. AS is doing nothing to "win" the job, while Hill is doing nothing to lose the QB start.
playing like s**t is considered not doing anything to lose the job.

Personally the guys playing receiver dropped a few of Smiths passes and shouldve caught the INT... If they are going to base this decision off tonights game then we are in trouble because Smith played better than the numbers showed.

Master Nate did a pretty good job and has a fruitful future here at SF.

I would love to see Nate Davis given an opportunity to play in a couple of series with the first team offense next week or in the last preseason game. I understand it's only preseason and it was against the Raiders second and third team defense, but what I saw in Nate Davis was that he has poise in the pocket, accurate and posses a great touch when throwing the ball, which is what is lacking with our current 1 & 2 QB.

imo smith looked good in the pocket tho.. he did throw a few away. but he made slight moves to just get space instead of running. that improvement period.

Enough with the double standards already. Seriously, if Hill doesn't play better than this, I would just as soon have Smith in there. I am disappointed with the play of both tonight, but that interception that Smith threw, Morgan should have caught.

Yeah he did play better tonight, but Hill looked like he has regressed. I hope that was an aberration, for the seasons sake.

You're pretty delusional if you don't think Hill would've had a better game throwing to Bruce and Vernon starting the game. Both options were off limit in the second quarter when he entered the game.

So with Hill basically being named the starter, can we end this thread. Or should we change the focus to Smith vs. Huard/Davis?

Hill looked bad tonight...just plain bad. No need to make excuses for him, he probably will be the starter, but he was outplayed by a rookie and the guy every other niner fan calls a bust.

I really didn't get that article... The title does not match the content, which is more of a summary. I like Hill, but he looked no better than Smith tonight, unfortunately...
