Unfortunately, it is over for Smith. That first quarter was pretty ragged and Smith did not do what it takes to earn himself the top spot. Hill wasn't that impressive either tonight, but I still think he is more decisive and more capable of improvising to make plays. Whatever physical advantages Smith has over Hill does NOT translate on game day. Time to give the reins to Hill.

Looking forward, I think Alex is gone after this season, especially if the Niners take a QB in the first round next year.

dont care about the pick there was no seperation. coffee carried hills bad performance. smith didnt do good either. Davis just jumped in the mix tho. I couldn't back any decision made from tonight, unless they said davis gets the nod. dead serious. they both looked like s**t.
based on hill's 7-3 record fine, name him the starter. but dont say its because of tonights game. alex didnt play bad today, hill looked like crap however.

Your making the assumption that Hill takes every snap and starts every game this season. I guarantee you Smith will be starting some games this year. This isn't the last of Smith in a Niner Uniform.

hill got carried, he played like s**t. coffee carried himhill the whole time!!!!!
I would consider it a wash, since they both did not look that good. Nate looked pretty damn solid though. AS is doing nothing to "win" the job, while Hill is doing nothing to lose the QB start.

i'm sorry did u say something?
Well both QB's sucked it up pretty bad tonight. Hill was every bit as bad as Smith, who hasn't played for 18 months. That is all that needs to be said on that topic. I was hoping to get Eric Berry and a pass rusher with those first rounders next year, but unless someone on the roster steps up big time, we are going to have to take a QB. For the love of God though...no Tebow.
I hope shaun proves me wrong but i think alex will be starting by week 5 and we're going to go 4-12 or something because we have no qb.

no s**t hah. coffee carries hill and hill gets respected? how bout that block by smith..... with sings mentality that made up for the pick whoevers fault it is i dont care either. but after that block yeah haters smith has no heart.....
Hill has proven he can be a Damon Huard type of QB.. someone that can start a few games and win... the 49ers are hoping that Hill can develop into a Kitna/Garcia type of QB, someone that can lead the team to the playoffs and put up some decent numbers here and there.. unfortunately for Hill we all know he will hit the talent wall soon, and having a QB like him means we will always be looking for someone better(unless he turns out to be the next Rich Gannon)

in Smith we have a QB who's been outperformed by 3rd stringers since his 1st year. Rattay, old Dilfer. Hill, JTO, Hill again..
Smith was given the starter job.. never earned it. I hear people always say "he improved so much his 2nd year" .... yeah when you go 9+games with 1 TD.. 7+tds your 2nd year would be a great improvement...

Huard: older version of Hill

Davis: looks ok. needs more time.

its clear we dont have Montana/Young anymore.. hell we dont have Garcia/Grback.. what we have are career backups competing with a 1st round bust.

i wouldn't mind seeing the 49ers bringing in an old vet to compete for the job.. shoulda gone after Vick, Favre, hell.. someone call Jake Plummer.. get the snake out of retirement! lol would rather see him compete with Hill to see were his talent level is really at.

I find it interesting of the huge double standard that people have set for these two QB's. Alex Smith has to play to Near perfect to even be considered for the starting job. There can be no flaws in his game or flaws in the game of any of his teammates or else it is all his fault.

If he gets sacked its because he held onto the ball to long.

If the line doesn't pick up the blitz its because Smith has poor pocket pressence.

If the recievers drop passes that hit them square in the hands its because smith throws to hard or doesn't throw a catchable ball.

However, if Hill has a bad game and gets sacked, and throws ducks, and basically plays worse than the guy that everyone loves to hate on, he should be named the starter and be paraded down the streets as the savior.

The double standard is just ridiculous.

Hill should have started, terrible decision to bench him which in fact threw off his rhythm today.
