They were I believe 12-0 and Davis was being talked about as a early 1st round pick or at least a 2nd rounder, but then he got really sick before his 2nd to last game and he sucked it up and tried to play anyway(because he carried the team almost entirely on his shoulders alone) but he played poorly and they lost their 1st game. Then in their bowl game Davis has his first poor game of the year (when healthy) and worries that he played poorly in the biggest pressure game of his life helped him drop out of the 1st round (along with the Dyslexia hysteria).
At least 6 months before the draft I was hoping the Niners would draft this stud as out QB of the future. I was deleriously happy when we hit the jackpot and got him in the 5th round ,because of the Dyslexia rumors etc).
He is very accurate and has the quickest release possible and throws rockets with a beautiful over the top motion and is a scrambler and runner and a great team leader. What more could you ask, except that he bring all of that to the NFL field? Hopefully for all of us fans,he does just that and in 2010 or 11 he is our starting QB.

Hopefully he can work out for us, a lot of the same things that you are saying about him are what the experts were saying about Smith coming out of college. Checking their college stats, they are almost identical type numbers. Davis threw more picks than Smith, but Smith was probably on a better team. But let's not count our chickens before they hatch, his learning disability might be a lot to overcome. He has to be able to learn the playbook. From the way you speak of him, it sounds like he is some relation or you are an alum of Ball State.

Davis has a quicker release and stronger arm. Davis also turned a crap team into a winner whereas it's beginning to look more and more like it was more Urban Meyer than Alex Smith.

Then the alecuse mutton heads come out and tout what he "MIGHT HAVE DONE". Do you honestly believe any of our four quarterbacks can lead this team well into the playoffs? If so, I'll have some of what you're having.

I believe we have 2 QBs that can Shaun Hill and Damon Huard...... see the thing is, we have talent of offense....we just need a QB that will put the ball in our playmaker hands with room to run.....just sustain drives and let our Defense rest.

Shaun Hill proved he could do this....and Huard has done this with weaker teams (talent wise) compared to the personnel on the 2009 49ers....

so yes, I believe we have some QBs that can lead this team well into the playoffs...we just have to play disciplined......and judging from the last 8 games last year...our penalties per game dropped....so a disciplined team with a good running game and a good defense should do fine in the playoffs.... I don't feel there are elite teams in the NFC anyway....maybe Chicago with Lovie coaching Cutler.....and maybe the Giants...although I feel Eli is overrated or atleast we can handle him.

It's very possible that Alex Smith will never amount to anything in the NFL. Then again -- never say never. I've been one of the biggest Alex critics on this board. I don't think he has it. I still don't think he has it.

But -- those who argue that he's never had a settled situation to begin with -- have a point. This is your San Francisco 49ers. There's a revolving door at the OC position. We haven't put a winning team together in nearly a DECADE. You can't put that all on Alex. He's part of the problem. But he's not all of it.

This case -- and what has happened to Alex -- strongly remind me of what happened to Jim Plunkett. The man came out of Stanford as a "can't miss" prospect and just got nailed for five years as the QB for New England. When he was shipped to the 49ers -- his right shoulder was the consistency of hamburger. He was in terrible shape.

His time with the Niners was no better. The team was changing head coaches every eight games. He didn't have much of a line, or many weapons, and just got KILLED for two years. I remember watching it. It wasn't a pretty sight. And soon -- he got shipped off to Oakland.

And there Jim Plunkett sat. On the bench. Behind Ken Stabler. Behind Dan Pastorini. And he sat and sat and sat.

But -- that gave him some new perspective. He got to see a class organization (and the Raiders were a class organization 25-years ago). His shoulder finally healed. And when he finally got a chance to see the field again? It was a different Jim Plunkett. He had finally arrived. He was older and wiser, but his time finally came and he made the most of it.

Today -- Plunkett is celebrated as one of the better QB's to ever play in the NFL. But nobody remembers his first seven or eight seasons -- which were AWFUL. They only remember the championships.

So -- because of what happened with Plunkett? I have to say that Alex still might amount to something. But it won't be with San Francisco. I think his time here, like Plunkett's time, is done.

Excellent post
All this talk about Huard? Why is everyone on board his ship now? We just had a guy saying that he's a quarterback who can lead us to the playoffs.

I seriously wonder what people were saying about Dilfer in preseason.

that is because they don't have a clue what they are talking about. That is the same reason that people were jumping on JTO during preseason.

No one will admit it, but a couple years ago when Dilfer was signed people loved the idea. He was supposed to be the steady mentor that our young QBs needed. People also loved him after a game against Arizona back in 2007. I believe he passed for 250 yards and a couple TDs. Of course everyone will now state that they always hated Dilfer and knew from the beginning that he was garbage.

The same people that are now in love with Huard will be calling for his head the first time he throws an interception. Fickle fans....

Have you seen Huard play......he is not horrible and with a talented offensive team I'm sure he can do fine..... he is like a late aged Vet. QB who can still play, kinda like Kerry Collins.... a couple of years ago Collins was considered horrible....but he has come around and is starting for the Titans.

I'm not saying he a superstar qb....but I feel comfortable having him back there compared to most other backups in the league...or free agents....as well as Alex.

This "QB Competition" is a huge mistake by Singletary. Hill is light years ahead of Smith. Instead of having this so called competition, Hill should be getting all the work with the first team so he can get more comfortable in the new offense.

Because Alex Smith has not proven to be starter capable. So, now you look at him as a backup and we want the best backup. I have a feeling Huard is a better NFL QB than Alex Smith. If Smith is a backup, he is no longer in our long term plans.

Not really. Everyone knew Dilfer sucked but he was going against Alex Smith and no one knew what Hill could do at that time.

I'm sorry fellas, but you MUST realize that Alex Smith IS THIS BAD.

Really? Hill has proven he can lead us into the playoffs in his 10 or so games? Wow. And, Huard? Really?

You've posted some pretty ridiculous things before that are clearly posted only out of your extreme hatred of Alex Smith, but this on really takes the cake.

While you are posting, Alex Smith is still trying to beat out a career 3rd stringer. There's still only a competition because Hill doesn't have a strong arm. If he had JTO arm, then it would be like last year.
