He started alot last year in place of injured Jason Taylor at LDE and on passing downs moved inside to DT. He played really good against the run for the Redskins.

He is a good rotation player with Sopoaga and will allow Balmer to play NT

Balmer has the prototypical size for a 3-4 LDE and maybe some nose tackle like jay ratliff which would be awesome. Evans is just there for depth not much else. Our pass rush will come from smith, haralson, and thru the draft.

Don't count out Manny Lawson! Manny should be back at full strength in 2009.

nice...
Does this signing signify an intention to shift to a 4-3? The price tag is quite cheap but not sure what kind of output we expect to get out of the guy. I hope he will be another Walt Harris type situation rather than a TBC or D Thomas...

yo dog r u from philipines?
Cheap Dline help, nice. Fields would have been much more expensive. Just like Scotty said, we are not spending everything in free agency, but just plugging holes.

These seem like the best moves for this team. Lets add some help in the draft (starting RT at #10 anyone?) and let Singletary continue what he had building at the end of last season.

NT- Franklin, Sopoaga, Balmer

LDE- Ray McDonald, Balmer, Evans

RDE- Justin Smith / Evans

NT- Franklin / Sopoaga / Balmer

LDE- Sopoaga / Ray McDonald (pass downs) / Balmer (rotate) / Evans

They only keep 6-7 DL, so they could still add one late rd pick

Justin Smith - ~60 snaps a game
Franklin - ~40 snaps a game
Sopoaga - ~40 snaps a game
Balmer - ~20 snaps a game
Ray McDonald - ~20 snaps a game
Evans - ~20 snaps a game

Evans isn't much known for his pass rush, but he is stout against the run. If this is true this a good signing.

i wonder what the niners see in evans.. they been trying to pursue him for years now..
This is a good signing, u know what a lot of people are complaining that we are not going after al these big name free agents, but I'm actually I'm very happy with what we've done so far we've filled needs which is possibly setting us up to take best player available at 10
Solid depth/rotation signing.

I assume now the rotation is as follows.

RDE- Justin Smith, Sopoaga

NT- Franklin and Balmer

LDE- Ray McDonald, Evans

Im thinking:
RDE-Smith and Mc. Donald
NT-Franklin,Soap,Rookie
LDE-Evans,Balmer
