Depends on if he can beat out Equanimeous St. Brown and Quintez Cephus for a starting job.

Great physical characteristics but is that what makes a great football player?
Would you rather have Jerry Rice or Randy Moss? Both are great, but Jerry said Moss was the most physically gifted WR in NFL history, and Rice was too slow and not explosive enough.
The real greats are psychos in one way or another.
Jerry was definitely very underrated because of that 40 time which may not have even been accurate. But your point is 100% valid, the greats have that extra drive and determination that takes them to that next level and it's rare that the super elite athletes have that type of mindset just because it came so naturally easy for them most of their lives. It's why Mahomes has a chance to be truly special. He seems to be that blend of elite talent and mental drive.
It will be interesting to see if Neyor can find that drive or if he's just an uber athlete who can't get the details down to pay off.
Talking to peak Roger Craig (and that dude was RIPPED) about Rice, Roger said he was insane. Roger said Rice was terrified that he would not make the big play so he honed his body to the point that his speed on the first snap of the season was the same on his last snap of the super bowl. Rice STILL runs the hill that broke hundreds of teammates and non-49ers players over the decades. Rice once said that Roger was the only one who came back to run the hill more than twice.
Michael Jordan admitted he coasted at times in the game, but he NEVER forgot a slight and would kill himself to teach a lesson. Ronnie Lott and Steph Curry were/are the same way. Disrespect them at your peril. Montana was a different kind of crazy ... personally he's a really nice funny silly guy, but he's super analytical and did a ton of work on his own to optimize every little bit of his game so he was ready to get the maximum out of every situation. Brady is the same way ... just work and maximize and work and maximize. Purdy is looking like he's got that too.
Then you have aliens like Kittle who just LOVES everything he does and that love drives him to greatness.
Unfortunately I don't think any of that can be taught once you are older than around 10. At best if it's there and just mis-directed maybe it can be re-directed. My daughters are all adults now and I love when they call me and blame me that their friends are okay being slackers and they just can't let themselves do it ... they complain about co-workers who are not pulling their weight. If you don't WORK at it you will never make it in the NFL regardless of your natural talent.
Hopefully Neyor was being held back by outside distractions and not something internal and the 49ers can unlock it :)
Anybody else remember Renaldo Nehemiah? Great athlete, not really a receiver.
I remember him well. I had season tickets back then and we all had high hopes for him. It didn't take long before we all saw tha the wasn't a football player. A Walsh experiment that didn't pan out.
Rice was great in many ways. Conditioning, attitude, attention to detail and route running were all a big part of his game. One of the most amazing things was how he managed to stay healthy all those years. Other than that one really bad knee injury he was always ready. Even then I remember that game where he came back after the injury and the roar from the crowd when he caught a TD pass.
We overuse the term great a lot when we describe athletes. In his case it couldn't be used enough. He defined greatness.
I remember Rice breaking down film on TV in like 93 and him showing how he set up a 4th quarter TD with his 3rd step into a route for 3 and a half quarters knowing that later he'd be able to use it as a key to get the defense thinking they knew what was coming. Just a genius at playing that position ... his brain and attention to detail is overshadowed by his numbers.
Another one was, I think, an NFL films show that was a half hour talking to DBs about Rice and showing the Rams week of prep leading up to playing the 49ers and Rice with the coach telling his players how they were going to shut down Rice then during the game with the DBs and coach bewildered as Rice destroyed them. The best clip was one where they were reviewing film with (I think) Panthers DBs Eric Davis and Tim McKyer and they showed a clip where Rice got open and put his hand up and they asked "What does this mean?" and Davis said "That's when all the air leaves the stadium" and then he and McKyer laughed and demonstrated by sucking in big breaths wide eyed :)
People are casual with words for how good a player is. Superstar being the worst. To be a superstar you have to be generally known outside of your sport. The NBA currently has 2 superstars, LeBron and Curry. The NFL's last superstar was Tom Brady. To be a superstar you have to be dominant and you have to win and you have to have a good image for marketing. Mahomes is probably the closest current player.
Jerry Rice was a superstar.

He was also known for how meticulous his uniform looked. Everything had to be perfect. I saw him at the DMV in Redwood City once. Dressed like a fashion model. He was driving a red Ferrari. Then I saw him at a car wash in San Carlos driving a silver Mercedes. Even his selection of vehicles was high end.

Yeah. Part of the Fifi nickname :)
I used to work right next to their practice facility, and the entire team would go to Pizza Hut occasionally (watching some players just eat pizza meat and sauce and salad but no cheese or crust was interesting) ... but never Jerry. He had a chef cooking for him.
The OL and DL were always hilarious and loud at the Pizza Hut.
Do you remember Ronnie Lott's bar in San Jose? That was my regular bar for a few years. Used to have players come and bartend some nights.
To stay on topic ... can you imagine Neyor starting work with Jerry including the hill? That is incredibly unlikely but would be fun.

Sports City Cafe. I used to go to the one in Cupertino. Had an interesting convo with Charles Haley there. He got drunk and started looking for a ride home. I was afraid that he might ask me since we had been talking earlier in the evening. Didn't want to handle a drunk Charles Haley.

Hehe. Exactly that.
There was a great burger joint in, I think Sunnyvale, that I suggested to Steve Wallace and he looked at me sideways until he explained that the place I named was a gay club ... turns out two different places with the same name :)
I would have offered Charles a ride ... but I've always approached life as an adventure.
So far he's made an impression on everyone. We shall see

At least his name is easier to pronounce.

He needs to put in some time learning to catch with his hands more than he does. He does it from time to time, but that trapping the ball against your body with your forearms will get you an occasional turnover from bad bounces or some db with better hands snatching it out of your arms. He's an awesome athlete, he just needs to do what Vernon Davis did back in his early days and spend extra time with the jugg machine catching passes until he can snatch the ball out of the air like a pro.

Yeah, he needs to get better at that but I think it's something he can learn to do more.
personally I'm not expecting anything out of him but if there is an UDFA or rookie on offense this year that will make an impact - he has a great chance with all the injuries and reps he'll get that he usually wouldn't.
edit: I forgot we got Watkins. So I imagine a majority of reps will go to Watkins. I haven't followed the first few days too much cause I've been busy.
