Last year of his deal, they already have 5 LBs ahead of him, mine as well get something for him.

San Diego obviously missed the memo and doesn't watch games. Winters was awful in coverage and was a liability many times throughout the season, especially when Warner wasn't in there. He's flat footed and does not recognize plays at all. His reactions are slow, but he will make a splash play every once in a while. Very worth a fifth rounder, especially since we got them in the sixth.

I don't think that's necessarily what it means though I hope you're correct. Probably more of he had the chance to be THE guy last year and really flopped; we just brought back Dre so he went from the commander of the defense to the bench which isn't ever good for a players development. It's good for both sides to part ways at this point, give him a fresh start rather than stunt his confidence/development.

Bethune is a better match with Warner as an enforcer than Winters, then we have Martin in the wings if we want 2 cover linebackers
