It is impossible despite any argument presented to know what Trey is. Yeah, I get the he has gotten injured when it was his time to go but that is a fluke. I'm on the Purdy train, ir took me a couple of months to get there but he is in the same boat. He has had an awesome start but that needs to be sustained for an entire year and deep into playoffs. Hell, probably two years.
Trey is coming up a different way. He didn't have all the college games on his resume. It does not mean that with long term play, like a year, that he could match or exceed Brock.
I think it's a bit of a crappy situation honestly, you can only know what you have by playing. You can't play both at once. I hope Brock is the next 49er QB God. It's been a hell of a long time and we are ready to get off this carousel, but my fear is Trey sits again, gets frustrated and demands trade or it's mutual and he lands somewhere and turns out to be a total stud after one to two years play. I get that you can't make decisions based on what if but Kyle really better know what he is doing here. Glad I'm not the one making that decision.
Trey is STILL a good guy and would be a valued member on any team.
Absolutely agree. It's a huge decision to commit to one guy you hope is the next franchise guy, but they each have their own pros and cons. It's really a safe floor vs protentional. Most want the safe floor guy because our team is stacked and should be competing if poor QB play doesn't submarine everything, but if you hit on the potential of a guy with Trey's ability, he can carry the team for years regardless of roster turnover. Tough to commit one way or the other because if it doesn't work out, and the other guy goes somewhere else and is more successful, people will be calling for your head. Maybe it's just me, but I'd be way more pissed off if Trey went somewhere else and succeeded than if Brock did, strictly because like I said above, if he hits he can carry a team.
Yeah I just don't see Brock as "safe" and I don't see Lance as this supreme talent. I think Brock is the one with much more potential and Lance as a Dak type player. I've never understood why people think he has so much potential. I've watched all his college and pro tape, I come away very uninspired. It's very average to me. Nothing sticks out to where I'm like "man he can be the next great one". People have different opinions, I respect that, I just don't get it.
it is a big commitment and the good news is that we don't have to make a firm decision for a couple years, if we don't want to. Brock is under contract for 3 more seasons and Lance for at least 2 more seasons. So you don't have to move off if either - you can play Brock and see how he does. If he isn't what some of us think, you can go back to Lance and still have a lot of time to figure him out.
I think they have to make a decision on his 5th year option this year so if they don't pick it up, he will most likely see that as a sign they don't think he's the guy and will try to force his way to somewhere he can play.
We will have to see how this season goes but right now, it looks highly unlikely we execute it. We would have to pay him $25M+ if we did that for the fifth year.
the fifth year option is a big reason why I think he still might be moved. Getting a young guy like him that's unknown with 2-3 years of his rookie deal left, should be attractive to someone. I just don't know what we are asking. If it's reasonable, I anticipate someone will want him.
