Literally like a month ago people were claiming 49ers didn't believe in Lance cuz they didn't talk him up enough. Now they're selling him too much???

The Lance/Cowherd stuff is hilarious. Back
around the time Lance was drafted, he was "friendly" with Cowherd's daughter. He was even at Colin's house at one point around draft time, so it seems like they had a thing going, and Colin praised the pick on his show, and said how much upside he had, and how great of a guy Trey was.

Fast forward one year, with Lance having still only been in the grooming stages, now Cowherd is doubting him? Based on what? Because hes not with your daughter anymore? Colin Cowherd is such a phony blowhard.

It's just a really stupid point. Maybe not on the level of "arm fitness" but still very stupid. And it clearly shows he hasn't been paying attention to new information about Lance this offseason…which includes that Trey was compensating for the finger injury last season and also wasn't 100% when they played Jimmy into the playoffs.

Also what is he even talking about? What has Kyle/John said which is any different than what he said KC/LA was saying about Mahomes/Herbert?

I guess the 49ers can't win in this PR thing until Garoppolo is actually off the roster and this garbage stops. Either way I hope Trey uses this as fuel and shuts up all these bozos who doubted him.

This might sound crazy. But hear me out.

Multiple people may have different opinions and takes on the same player.

silly take
A good article that discusses the baseline performance of QBs in the Shanahan offense, hinting at a successful season for Lance due to the playcalling and surrounding talent.

Creating the Baseline

"A substantial reason why the Shanahan offense has spread across the NFL is the baseline level of quarterback play it creates. That high floor is reflected by the numbers the 49ers have put up in the passing game since Shanahan's arrival as head coach in 2017.

In that span, a period in which Brian Hoyer, C.J. Beathard and Nick Mullens have also played quarterback for San Francisco, the 49ers are ninth in net passing yards per game with an average of 244.9.

San Francisco has finished in the top 10 in Football Outsiders' efficiency metric, DVOA, for passing offense twice during Shanahan's tenure, ending the 2021 season in the top five.

Despite the limitations of a quarterback in Garoppolo who lacks a top-tier arm and has a maddening tendency to put the ball in harm's way, the Niners led the NFL in both yards per play and yards per pass play in 2021. Three other teams that run versions of the Shanahan offense, the Rams, the Bengals and the Packers, finished in the top six in the latter category.

….Per rbsdm.com, Lance led the NFL in Air Yards per attempt in Week 17 with 11.6 and still managed to finish sixth among quarterbacks with a Completion Percentage Over Expectation (CPOE) of 8.5.

Garoppolo, to his credit, ended the regular season seventh with a CPOE of 2.7 but had an Air Yards average of 7.6 that was only good enough for 21st. Comparing Lance's performance against Houston to the 15 games Garoppolo played is an evaluation of markedly different sample sizes, however, his display in beating the Texans served to suggest Lance can replicate Garoppolo's accuracy while more regularly attempting throws that have a better chance in resulting in chunk plays."

. His first full season as a starter is unlikely to come without difficulties. The 49ers will be forced at some point to overcome a period of struggle from Lance. However, as Shanahan has proved consistently during his tenure with San Francisco, his is an offense ideally built to survive such dips."

I guess Colin needs clicks too.

hard to generate clicks with "trey is a promising young qb who is looking to improve in his 2nd year and 1st year as a starter". its not a juicy take.

He's got to get some experience. I think he'll struggle a bit early. Hopefully not.

I think both of these tales are accurate. He's probably going to have ups and downs this season. The highs will be the best we've seen from a niners QB since Kap and the lows will look like the "bad Jimmy" plays. I'm hoping we can win by any means necessary for games 1 and 2, because I think we'll have some tough sledding after that, but if we can bet to our bye at or near .500, and his growing experience will start to pay off and our schedule gets a bit easier down the stretch.

Expect wow plays, expect some facepalming. But what we know is he's super physically gifted, he's a film junky, and he's made of the right stuff. So he'll most likely succeed. It just probably won't be Herbert/Mahomes level of immediate impact.

Makes sense.

I think he's going to tear it up from the get go. I have that much confidence in him.

Agree

He'll have some bad plays, bad throws and decisions but IMO he'll get better every week and by playoff time we'll be a force.
So is King's "opinion" OK on this one?

This might sound crazy but nothing has changed since the previous narratives. If anything new information explained why they didn't make the move to Trey considering he was still dealing with his own finger injury.

It's also the fact that the 49ers haven't been selling Lance anymore than Chiefs were selling Mahomes. If anything they've been selling him less because they're still trying to pretend they may keep Jimmy around in the hopes of moving him for more than peanut shells.

Opinions may be different when judging the same information/play/etc. but in this case the so called "opinion" is coming off BS. So why should it be respected as just a "difference of opinion"?

I read what he said and to paraphrase it was to not make any judgement on Lance due to his lack of experience. Sounds logical to me.

My point is everyone has a take and to ignore baseless ones like the one you linked. Otherwise, you are helping to promote it.

The only logical position until we have actual game footage. But that doesn't scream clickbait.

Cowherd's job is to have takes.

He has a weekly segment where he talks about when he was wrong.

Don't read too much into it.
