I'd rather Lynch not pay that much and just draft an RB like Ronald Jones, but oh well. Hoping McKinnon balls out

Shanahan loves speed

Sure does.

But does that love blind him and cause him to focus too much on speed while ignoring the physical side of football?

Last offseason his obsession with speed was clearly behind every move we made at WR. And what do we need now? Size at WR!

It looks like we will be in the same spot with RB. We will have dangerous backs for sure. Will we have the size and physicality to convert those TDs?

I have a hunch they are gonna get Gesicki or Goedert, that will be our size, but at TE

I'm sure it's been mentioned but looking at spotrac we have a potential out after this season. Still confused by the numbers overall for this contract

Yeah, Lewis was the better deal. 31 million for 3.8 ypc with marginal pass pro skills.

Actually, McKinnon was ranked 8th overall by PFF amongst backs in pass pro. His skills in that capacity are anything but marginal.

RE perfect fit

Joe Williams was handpicked by KS to fit his scheme. How'd that go?

Alfred Morris was also handpicked by KS to fit his scheme. How'd that go? Tevin Coleman was also handpicked by Kyle...how'd that go too?

See how stupid it is to single out one failure and ignore a larger context of Kyle and Bobby Turner success in finding proper RB talent for their outside zone blocking scheme?
It's almost like people don't understand the importance of having a guy like McKinnon in a division where you have a cover 3 type defense in Seattle that fans out it DBs so wide they leave in the intermediate area of the field open and another team in the Rams who just gutted their LB corps. He's going feast underneath and present serious problems that will open up the field for our WRs.

I think it's fair to say McKinnon was paid alot more than people expected. It seems the 49ers really wanted him though. I read he was set to sign with the Jets then the niners swooped back in with a bigger offer. This is the byproduct of free agency. Contracts and numbers get inflated.

It's a risky deal to pay someone as one of the top tier in their position when they've never been in the feature role. Even if people are on the fence about Lynch or the money here, I do think Kyle has earned some latitude and when it comes to running backs. Nobody has breed more success into the position more than the Shanahans, who have taken marginal talents at times and made them into pro bowl esque looking players in this running scheme. The fact that the team wanted McKinnon fairly badly should provide some relief. When it comes to running backs, I don't know if anyone has earned more trust than a Shanahan. I'm willing to concede to the benefit of the doubt here for now.

If he actually makes his $30 million it means he was the answer so Im good with that, otherwise its just a front loaded 4yr ~$22m contract while we have the salary space .

Seems weird to shell out that much money on the cusp of one of the most loaded RB classes in recent history but whatevs..,.. In Lynchahan we trust. Last year they made equally questionable moves with the trade for Kapri Bibbs. At least McKinnon is an athletic freak that has shown something in this league. I remember some games where he looked like the better running back over Adrian Peterson due to his versatility when Peterson was getting stuffed.

Anyways, this just shows we will be running an offense centered on the QB for once and not our running game like New England. Allot of weapons that can get open within the first 2 seconds/first 5 yards, short passes that are essentially runs and Williams/McNichols subbing in for the tough yards. The priorities for Rbs have changed in certain offenses.. there is a reason Blount hops from team to team, contract to contract, even after an 18TD season and winning superbowls... but Lewis was one of the top targets in FA.

Yeah, I'm concerned, not worried. I don't see our 4 minute ball control offense that Walsh employed to put teams away in the 4th qtr when we're ahead. Jusczyick is the only bruiser that I can see on the team and he has plenty of speed too. I'd like to see if we can get another Jusczyick 2.0 to back him up for the 4 minute offense.

As for physicality, the '84 defense was one of our smaller defenses, but man were they physical! We had one of our best pass rushes in that defense. That's a defense I'd love to have back to match with Kyle's offense.
