I understand your hypothetical was based around the games Watson wouldn't be available. I was saying Jimmy would theoretically fill some of those and THEN be insurance for a Watson injury once Watson is back.

They have Brissett. He's been there through the offseason program. If he/they struggle out of the gate, they arent going to offer a worthwhile trade to the 49ers to bring in Jimmy G and jam him in for a handful of starts with no offseason prep.

A better question to debate would be what hypothetical trade offer would be good enough for the 49ers to ship Jimmy out.

Backup Jesus.. Jimmy was into Subs this offseason so hard that he became one

I expect Jimmy to be a good teammate and be extremely beneficial to Treys growth as he's experienced and can give Trey the Alex Smith treatment.

I feel like, at this point, with everything that's been said / implied, it would be a lot. A late day one pick, or multiple day two picks. JG may not be "worth" that much, but he may be worth that much as insurance for the 49ers. The 49ers really seem like keeping JG around as a backup / potential starter if things go south with Trey, is their priority, and it would take something beyond what most of us envisioned all offseason to ship JG out now.

The other thing about all of this is that Jimmy stays with the team all season signs elsewhere next year, because he wasn't waived or cut, he will figure into the overall comp pick. Which is better than nothing.

Blows my mind the amount of hate this is getting from fellow niner fans. Their main argument is how this undermines Trey. They want a stacked roster at every position but QB, the most important position in sports.

These QBs are some of the most strong minded individuals in all of sports and they think having Jimmy in the same room is going to hinder Treys development? It would be different if Jimmy was a jerk and didn't want to help but Trey has already said numerous times that Jimmy was his best friend last year all while Jimmy knowing his days were numbered.

Kyle has been nothing but transparent and up front with Jimmy and Lance about what is going on. Both understood. The media can't grasp that and like to rock the boat.

Like you said, this is good insurance, 17 game season, even a young strong player gets nicked up-Trey did in case everyone has forgotten. That is just the game now with such a long season.

Both Trey and Jimmy have said they are good with the arrangement. That is the testament to their high character that the niners want from their players. Avoid the Haley's and Aldon Smiths.
