You think they're going to wait for the 49ers to cut him and risk coming up empty handed over what would likely be a mid round pick? I doubt that.

If Watson's suspension is extended, Garoppolo becomes a priority for them. He already is familiar with the offense so he can hit the ground running a lot more quickly but the sooner they get him in, the sooner he can be fully ready to go. Their roster is ready to compete, they can't afford to waste a year on Brissett or some other rubbish QB.

Nah reports are they could have a decision before the first preseason game. If he's getting a 10 + game suspension (which is likely) then it makes all the sense in the world to trade for JG and get him in camp asap.

he's better than Jacoby Brissett and they're trying to actually win games. Jimmy would redo his deal and start most of the year.

I guess we'll find out soon enough than. Hope folks don't get their hopes up too high for a possible 6th round draft pick. LOL

At this point any draft capital compensation will be a win.

Provided we are on the hook for zero of his salary. If we have to pay something to acquire a draft pick, I would rather just cut him.

His contract is not gtd. We will eat none of it.

Not only that but if Jimmy gets cut I do believe there will be more of a market for him. Won't just be the Browns.

I know its not guaranteed. But with a non-guaranteed contract, its much more complicated to trade for him (unless the Browns are willing to pay the non-guaranteed salary). So there will have to be negotiations by the Browns and Jimmy's camp prior to any trade.

Wow, what a jerk. No wonder teams don't want to trade for him.

Damn it. Now I am interested but cannot read the article.

Same

This stuff is so effing dumb. We are really going get trending news about JG from 2017-2018? Really? Now? As we are trying to get him out of town? When you type Garoppolo in google.. a hit piece pops up.. talking about 5 year old stuff... great job guys..

Gotta wonder about the timing with this and his Pats tenure gossip that 5-6 year old stuff being rehashed this offseason...

What exactly do you think is going on?

I don't know.. but does it seem normal for a negative piece about what he did after signing a deal 5 years ago to be trending news on the player today? Why is a 5 year old story that paints him in a negative light now trending? ODD.

ODD, indeed.

In the past, I have generally liked Mike Silver. He usually had reasonable takes on issues and seemed to have reliable sources. Now, this piece comes out that is totally unlike what he has written in the past. Something is going on...

Ideally all that prep work was done previously when SF gave authorization to talk with other teams.

Cleveland would be paying Watson literally nothing this season. They have the cap space to absorb Garoppolo without skipping a beat.

Yeah I'm not and doubt it would happen but I've said it makes sense for them for a while now…

imo it would be a conditional 3rd or 4th as well.

all he did was speak with an ex coach, maybe mcdaniel, saleh? who knows.

"Will consider acquiring" is not exactly big news. Of course they'll consider acquiring him. They'll consider doing a lot of things. The conversation will probably go something like this:

"Should we acquire Jimmy?"
"No, I've heard he ghosts people. This is a classy organization, we can't have people like that in our locker room."
"Good point. I'll tell people we considered it so it looks like we're doing our due diligence."

Wouldn't be shocked if there has been negotiations from Jimmy's agent. He ain't playing for $25M anywhere in 2022…Jimmy and his agent have to accept that. The goal should be to get some gtd cash and go to a team where he's gonna start/they have a chance to win games. His contract issue is for 2023.

Depends on when the Watson decision is announced. I'm guessing that the NFL doesn't want him taking the field at all so it would have to come out before tomorrow night.

At that point, Cleveland would have a small window to bring in a new QB and get them up to speed with the rest of the team. Garoppolo is basically the only starter caliber QB available that has experience in that offense.

Just for expediency, they might be willing to overpay to get him in the building PDQ. If they offered a 4th or 5th, it'd still be a lot better than cutting him for nothing weeks later.

Our FO was too greedy.

I think he can win 10 or 11 games with a team like Cleveland. Strong run game, decent defense. Some fans are old and the last thing they see before they die is a simple playoff run. Jimmy can provide that. So are two 2's really that much?

Think you know the answer to your question

As I get older I think about it from the perspective of the fan. If I got cancer and 1 season left of football to watch, then no, two 2's ain't that much. If i'm thinking long term then yes they are.

Unfortunately fans can't make that decision. But an older coaching staff who needs to win now might.

In the market as it existed in February, a healthy JG would have been worth two 2s. He wasn't healthy and now the market is totally changed. Still, we cannot forget that he played well enough to have his team within a dropped pop fly of a second Super Bowl.
