No, Thomas is a frontline defensive tackle and the game's best rotational lineman.
He just doesnt want to get there. It's that simple.

Want to get where? What does that even mean?

Thomas has a motor like you wouldn't believe. He can't play defensive end because he's not a defensive end. He's as pure a DT as you'll ever find. As pure as the driven snow. It's like whining about John Lynch not shutting down wide receivers if you move him to corner.

Every time i see this guy he is standing around hitting nothing. On the edge hes a zero.

Maybe inside its different.

There isn't a Solomon Thomas supporter on the planet who thought he was anything other than horrible on the outside. Not sure why people are still talking about him at DE as though it's relevant to any discussion. It's as unanimous as anything in life...and there are people out there who think chocolate milk comes from brown cows.

But he's stuck playing there yet again because of Dee Ford's injury. It just never ends. He should never receive another snap at DE in his life (unless it's a 3-4 defense, of course). It's like putting Ted Washington at DE.

That's why people calling him a "tweener" is so laughable. He's very good inside and abysmal on the edge. That's the opposite of a tweener. A tweener would be someone who gets equal results no matter where you line him up.

I really want ST to be awesome, I really like ST, but DJ is playing out of his skull right now. There is just no room for ST right now.

There's room in inside rotation, but the 49ers have paper thin depth at DE, and continue to boneheadedly think that since Thomas runs 4.69 in the 40, this means he's a better fit at DE than other guys.

I appreciate your passion on this topic, but I have to think the people in the best position to know wouldn't play him out of position unless it was where he could help the team the most.

I just think he's a bust, which is unfortunate because he is a good guy.

a motor you wouldn't believe? huh? I havent seen that anywhere on any tape going back to stanford. If you warch him play you should know exactly what i mean. Hes a hider. The only reason I don't totally throw him in the trash is because jd says he does a good job inside. I just haven't seen it.
This is crazy talk he's been giving us great depth!! Move on from the 3rd overall pick talk. He is what he is. We are not dropping off much when he plays. He's very good backup an depth for us. We know he didn't turn into A star as a high round pick. Move on

Just for one example in this game, he literally hurdled a blocker on the backside of a play and ran full speed towards a back he had no chance of catching up to.

There were plays where he chased ball carriers down from 25+ yards back at Stanford.

If you want an example of him catching someone from way out this year, watch the opening drive of the Redskins game where Peterson hits Buckner's gap and bounces it outside, and Thomas, from the LDT spot, chases Peterson down all the way to the other sideline.

He played a bad game in this one because he played all but 2 or 3 of his snaps at DE. He seems to know now that he has no chance of beating an OT in pass rush and just focuses on bull rushing him...I guess to at least collapse the pocket a little and potentially help out his teammates to finish the job.

What happened? Your TradeThomastoNE username got banned?
Thomas is the ultimate tweener, not explosive enough off the edge, not big and strong enough to play inside against double teams. On the inside one on one he can definitely make some plays, and has a non stop motor, not sure he ever turns into a stud.
arik armstead is exhibit A on why you shouldn't give up on a player too soon but at the same time ST has a lot of work to do
Did he even play?
