That was a penalty to keep the game from being out of hand. You could call that almost every play

Broncos doing a very good job against the Panthers running. It's the one area I thought the Panthers have the advantage going into the game.

The referees have far too much impact (negatively) than they should. They had several replays which showed that that ball never touched the ground and was a Panther first down. Still a long way to go, but that decision clearly has impacted the game. A crystal clear if not conventional Panther first down turns into a Broncos TD.
