Nobody in the NFL should be penalized at all for personal use of marijuana. It's a silly, stupid rule and IMO, it has more to do with the NFL's relationship to beer companies than anything else. It certainly has nothing to do with health or performance enhancing. 26 states already allow medical use and four states allow complete recreational use.

The NFL needs to get into the 21st century here.

They will. But the NFL already has a black eye with domestic violence stuff. They don't need to be the organization that promotes marijuana use or encourages it. Once it becomes legal on a federal level, it won't matter anymore.

Not true. Most employers don't drug test employees. In fact, at least five or six large high tech companies tried it in the late 80's and dropped the practice within three years. Let's not pretend there is anything noble or socially responsible about the NFL taking tens of millions in dollars from corporations that produce beer and drugs while at the same time denying its players the right to use it for whatever reason they choose. Pharmaceutical drugs and alcohol are much bigger societal problems than marijuana will ever be. Big pharma and alcohol kill thousands of Americans a year. The biggest drug problem in the country is daily dosage pharmaceutical opiates and right behind it is alcohol abuse. But the NFL not only allows these things, it makes tens of millions in ad money for these corporations. And that has more to do with its marijuana policy than anything else.

With respect, I think you need to think about this a little more. Watch "North Dallas Forty" please and pay attention to the very first sequence in which Nick Nolte wakes up in the morning. It's very realistic and based on a book written by a former Dallas receiver. I'm sure you're right that a lot of people who claim to use the herb for medical reasons are actually using the herb for reasons you don't seem to approve of, but so what? If the NFL told players they could be suspended for drinking milk, would you think that was appropriate? After all, milk is a legal substance, right? But wait. Why shouldn't a member of the Seattle Seahawks or the Denver Broncos be able to go home in Washington or Colorado and smoke some pot for whatever reason including joint and muscle pain? It's legal in those states.

And unfortunately, because people always seem to jump to conclusions about these things, let me just say this a philosophical issue for me and that's it. I'm in my 60's and I don't take any drugs at all. I have a glass of wine with dinner maybe twice a month. I'm very boring. But I do have a family member who believes that pot saved her life while she was going through chemo therapy treating cancer. And I have another family member who has a daughter with epilepsy. A certain kind of medical marijuana they have been giving her under a doctor's care has reduced her seizures from hundreds per month to 1-2 per month. So there you are. In my opinion, the fact that this stuff is illegal is a disgrace.

Not sure, but if it's in the CBA, and it says no Marijuana use, then they have the right to suspend him, it would be what the NFLPA and NFL agreed upon.
