The extra Money he'd get by an agent-negotiated contract would likely end up with an agent. A decent lawyer should be able to protect his ass from the most grevious violations.

Neither Jay Z or Floyd Mayweather have a back ground that would scream financial literacy, yet both handle contracts on the day to day. Floyd even handles the promotional contracts, so once again it can't be that difficult.

I wouldn't be surprised if the NFLPA comes up with a "boiler plate" contract with options for performance incentives, scales for positions/seniority/ranking etc, that is pretty bullet proof and has no loopholes.

A players goes to the secure website, clicks a few things (position/ ranking of player in that position/# of years/a few other things), then some options come up for performance incentives, and hits print.

That contract is the starting point and is submitted to the Team. Any changes the Team makes, the Player reviews it to see what he thinks, and then submits it to his Attorney for review. Back and forth a few times and it's signing time.

Many different forms of contracts and legal documents are already done this way (Legalzoom for example)

I doubt many will fillow suit. Its not a ridiculously difficult thing to do but its not easy either. If players were mtoivated to represent themselves they could do it. I just doubt very many players are willing to learn the minutae inherent to making sure they dont get screwed.

But c'mon..i know it generally takes a law degree to become an agent, but thats for a regular dude like me or you. He's already a player and has tons of relationships in the one and only industry he's concerned with doing contracts in (and only his own contract at that). It takes some work, business savvy and motivation, but its not molecular biochemistry.

The Union has a network of attorney's and lawyers that are employed by the NFLPA. They should and could handle all contracts. Most of the time hold outs are because agents want top dollar so they make a piece of the pie. They have investors and CEO to answer to. Big time agents have big time costs. I should know, I watch BALLERS with the Rock yo!!

the problem is, it's not just contracts.

commercials, maybe movie appearances, endorsements, being on sports talk shows radio / tv, doing charity appearances, or make-a-wish. there's so many things an athlete does besides playing his sport.

i would want an agent / accountant and whatever could make my life easier, especially if i was a big time sports player. i don't want to waste my time having to book myself and negotiate every little thing, i rather be training or enjoying the little time off i have.
