But, the first thing I thought of when we signed Dockett was this: Justin Smith has told the team that he's not coming back. Did any of you get that message?

What? No. Didnt get that message.

Thl what is with docketts low pff run numbers?

Wow, the 49ers DL/front 7 could be amazing next year. Please don't retire Cowboy, with Willis, Bowman, Dorsey, Ian Williams returning, Dockett signed, Aldon having a full year, Lynch going into his 2nd season, we could end up having the best D we've seen in this Niner era.

This. If he stays healthy, and Cowboy is back he'll have 6-8 sacks lined up next to Lynch and Dorsey or Williams. It'll definitely be a pick your poison option for offenses. I also think he brings an attitude that we really need on this team, he's a mean mutha f**ka, and we don't have that.

Remember we dont have the same defensive coach... lets see how he uses the secondary

That's what I am wondering as well. When I watched his film last night, I was only looking at plays where I saw the offense lined up with 3/4 WRs, which meant ARI was in nickel - to see where Dockett lined up. If the offense didn't have 3 WRs on the field, I didn't watch the play. Watching how he plays the run will take more time to get a sense for why he grades so poorly (according to PFF) against the run. It's a long offseason so I will try to get around to it.

Darnell Dockett Dec 30 2012

San Fran has a sick ass fan base, always a pleasure to play here. They got some real loyal fans.

What I Expect

Dockett adds fantastic veteran depth to a position of need. With Dial on the team I don´t expect Dockett to play a lot of base but he should be a nice addition to our sub packages.

Base
A.Smith, J.Smith, Dorsey, Dial, Lynch

Nickel
A.Smith, Carradine, Dockett, Lynch

Should be fun to watch !

Pro Football Focus

In regards to the PFF stats and where he lines up.

Almost every time I watched the Dockett he rushed from DT. I don´t think PFF accounts for packages. If a Team list you as 3-4 DE, they list you as 3-4 DE. Dockett played 890 snaps in 2013 and PFF list him with 890 snaps in their 3-4 DE section.

For example according to PFF Justin Smith hasn´t played a single snap at DT in San Fran

Antics and Fines

Like I said in the DE Oakman Baylor Thread last year I´m not a fan of Docketts antics every now and then (stomping on OL hands, late hits, alleged spitting etc) but he is funny as hell and a good addition to the locker room.

Tomsula 1 : NFC WEST 0

I was just about to ask someone to help me clarify what PFF considers a DT. If Justin doesn't show up as playing DT, then that would immediately tell me that PFF considers him solely as a DE, and we know for a fact that Justin lines up at DT all the time in nickel/dime. Thanks for clarifying.

I see the general use of the DLmen the same way with regards to base versus subpackages. It's not that Justin is no good at pass rushing, it's that he is badass at run defense and we can't realistically expect him to play all three downs at this stage of his career. I also think Tank will be a better pass rusher than he is a run stopper which is why I'm thinking he plays DT alongside Dockett in nickel/dime. This is just an assumption. Lots of various options provided Dorsey and Ian return to health while Tank and Dial continue their uptick in development.

No question. I also wonder how PFF defines these players when they DO slide inside but are still seen as a DE. Once Justin slides inside, his role could be drastically different. For one, he may be responsible for leverage and tying up two OL outside while Aldon stunts inside and rushes through that gap. But if the offense calls a running play, a draw, off tackle, that could count against Justin in the run support category (heck, maybe the pass rush too) where there was no fault but the mere fact that the offense called a good play against our scheme/assignment.

That's why I voted for you as NT POTY. Johnny does good work, too, but you never have an offseason. Keep up the good work, man! (<< I mean that literally: get that sh!t done, son!)

I remember hearing that cowboy came in on Wednesday to discuss his plans for the future! That just so happened to be the same time Dockett was in signing! My thought is that cowboy came in to help recruit and will end up playing this final season. The DL is too good for him not to. IMO
