Well, Smith proved him wrong. Reid watched Smith for several years and I would argue his judgement has been proven to be the more accurate.

Over the last 7 games through the wild card game, only Denver scored more points. KC averaged 35/game. The Colts wild card game was not a fluke.

Team points can be misleading, sure it's convenient to argue that Alex progressed because "the Chiefs scored points" but that's not the whole story.

What I meant to say was...Alex Smith's potential "in the 49ers system" has been maxed out. Harbaugh/Roman likes chunk yardage, and Smith was not that dude. So I applaud Reid for tailoring the system to Smith's strengths, question now is, how long until Reid's patience runs out, because they can't play the Colts defense every week!

Read all of my post. The Chiefs AVERAGED 35 points per game over the last 7 games including the wild card game.

As the season went along and the rest of the Chiefs offense became familiar with Reid's WCO system they began to pile on points. Smith proved in that stretch that he could gain chunk yardage as well as execute the typical short-to-medium game that many identify as WCO. So don't bank on Reid getting impatient with Alex Smith. He CHOSE Alex Smith because he mirrors Reid's PREFERENCE for offense.

You claim that you watched the Chiefs games this past season but here again is a quote that makes me question whether or not you did.

K that's fair, and what you're saying is correct, but like I said...it's not about scoring points, it's about competing for championships. The Chiefs can score all the points they want, but what happens when you face an elite team?

The bottom line is Alex Smith cannot hang in the NFC, let alone the NFC West. Harbaugh knows this, and now the Niners are banging on the championship window which is going to break pretty soon, imo.

Considering that the Chiefs lost 5 starters in that game including their #1 and #2 hbs I'd be willing to bet the same of the Chiefs...and it probably wouldn't be close the 2nd time around.

You can't deny the NFC West is stronger now more than it ever was from 2012 and before, and it's only going to be stronger.

I like Smith's game very much. While not as dynamic it is very efficient, particularly in the area of recognition. I know that the salary cap would have made it impossible but I believe Kaepernick would be farther along now if he would have had the opportunity to watch Smith for another season.

To be honest, I think both QBs looked good at times and bad at others during the season. One thing is for certain. Both can play and both will get paid this offseason.

Smith may elect to accept a very cap friendly number so the Chiefs can get him more weapons, however, if he gets paid in line with other QBs around the league, he will more likely get Matthew Stafford numbers = $17MILLION/yr.

Smith has suggested that he's not really interested in the money. So I suspect a very friendly number that a lot of people will take as the Chiefs not thinking much of Alex.

You can't deny the AFC West is stronger now more than it ever was from 2012 and before, and it's only going to be stronger.

I agree as far as that goes...but I would say for the most part that Alex looked progressively better and Kap was more of a mixed bag....but for the most part both improved as the season went on. Kap is younger and I would expect bigger improvement next year. The question on Alex is can he keep up his performance of the last 6 games.

they must be sorely butthurt this offseason because there wasnt much chunk yardage in niners passing game in 2013

And see, I don't view it as Kap got his weapons back. He lost Crabtree but gained Boldin. I'd call that mostly a wash. Manningham wasn't there for a big chunk last season and didn't mean much this season either. The biggest loss was Walker but the offense gained on other things...

As far as improvement goes...just going by rating..and that isnt' the whole story, Alex starts at 82 for the first half and 98 for the 2nd half.

Kap starts at 87 and ends at 95. Considering that Kap has more weapons than Alex does, I'd say that's impressive. Adding to that in the 2nd half Kap gained Crabtree, you have to wonder how much of that was Kap getting better vs Kap having more weapons.
