Alex Smith will be the designated starter going into next year. In the offseason he'll show an improved rapport with his receivers and a better grasp of the offense.

However, Nate Davis will move up the depth chart and will probably get some reps with the first team. He'll show a good grasp of the offense and he'll continue to wow the team and fanbase with his arm strength, accuracy, pocket presence and leadership.

Come preseason Alex Smith will play decent, but nothing special. In comparison Nate Davis will show more big play potential and have long sustained scoring drives. Despite the obvious hints at a having a potentially explosive offense, the fanbase's excitement will be stymied when the coaching staff makes the conservative choice and sticks with Alex Smith as the starter.

The team will once again start with a record of 2-1, with the obligatory win over the Tards', a winnable road loss and another win over either the Lambs or Chickens of the Sea. The wins will be a result of the defense creating turnovers, while the offense will fail to put points up on the board and blow teams out.

Next, the season will enter into the stretch we're the team normally gets exposed as pretenders by losing winnable games against mediocre and good teams.

In the first such game, Alex Smith will stink it up against a good defense. For the sake of irony, I hope it's the Broncos. He'll get pulled out of the line up during halftime and replaced by Nate Davis.

The offense will get an initial spark, but unlike Smith against Houston, he'll actually pull out the win.

While Nate Davis leads the comeback, Alex Smith will stand on the sideline with his pathetic slumping body language that he always have after an Int or a failed 3rd down conversion. In the postgame he'll say all the right things "About being team first and being happy for the win." Then he'll say the wrong prideful things about "Believing that he shouldn't lose the starting job, but that the decision is up to the coach to decide and for him to accept."

In his press conference, Mike Singletary will be noncommittal about who the starting QB is for next game, but it will become obvious when Nate Davis gets the first team reps. With Nate Davis starting the next game, the Alex Smith era will have come to it's pathetic and long over due end.

There's no saying how long our how successful the Nate Davis era will be, but it will be a huge sigh of relief knowing that the Alex Smith experiment is over. He will ride the bench and fade into offseason oblivion.

I can't wait for 2010!

I thought this would happen this year! Davis' exploits in preseason last year were not appreciated by many fans because most of them thought Hill was the obvious starter and Smith the obvious backup.

Now, they will focus in on Davis as a possible starter and if he does well, then there will be a lot of pressure to play him.

Next year is the telling year for the coaches. If it is another year at the bottom of the offensive pile, then it is doubtful they would be back for a third year. They will play whoever keeps them in the game, and will abandon Smith if he fails at all. This was his nurturing year to mend his mind, next year it will be more impersonal.

smith will start the season and if he sucks complete ass a few gms in davis will come in after sitting this past yr and an off season and another tc of learning the playbook and watching the gm from the sidelines. but then again i dont think smith will suck after knowing hes the #1 guy going in, another yr of raye's sorry ass offense, a way improved oline and getting good chemisrty with the rcvrs especially crabtree. if smith can just work on his accuracy and pocket presence he will be way better off

the only way Davis comes in is if he is the #2 QB. I have a feeling he will still be the #3 QB with either Hill remaining at the #2 spot or Hill being cut and a vet QB brought in to back up Smith.

It's isn't a matter of dispute that Alex Smith is the starter next year, but it's guaranteed that he'll get benched if his mediocre play continues. Just as Singletary benched O'Sullivan for Hill and Hill for Smith, Singletary will bench Smith for Davis if he isn't doing well.

Alex Smith is the designated starter but his starting status it isn't sancrosanct. That's how the league works, look no further than Drew Bledsoe's career.

The promotion of Nate Davis as the starting QB during mid season is inevitable.
Come to terms with it.

Nate Davis? What, are we already conceding the next season. Barring some miraculous trade for a good veteran or a Free Agent, Shaun Hill still has a winning record. With Alex Smith we've gotten 17 turnovers in the last 3 games and Alex STILL CAN'T SCORE! Enough with this guy..my grandmother could score more than this guy and she's got a wooden leg and one eye. Even JaMarcus Russell could have scored more than Alex.

I'm a Singletary supporter, but if he opens next season with Alex Smith starting, then he deserves to get fired if we don't win the division.

Hill has never been in the conversation to start again. The team likes his grit but understands that he doesn't have the physical tools to be a starting QB.

As for the vet option, rather than retaining a vet in Damon Huard as the 3rd QB, the team let him go because Nate Davis showed strong potential in the preseason.

Davis will be made the back up and he'll get his shot when Smith flops.

I'm not sure you know this or even seen that I pointed it out in the previous post; but just because Smith starts the season as the #1 QB, it doesn't mean that he will be the starter regardless of his performance or the teams W-L record.

It's been established that if the QB play is subpar then Singletary won't hesitate to make a change to the back up.

And to the possibility of the team getting a vet to be the #2 and not Nate Davis, that's not grounded in reality.

Have you seen the list of available QBs in free agency? Kyle Orton (not leaving Denver), Jason Campbell, Chad "Noodle Arm" Pennington, Kellen Clemens, Charlie Batch, Kyle Boler, David Carr, Rex Grossman, Joey Harrington, John Kitna, Daunte Culpepper, Brodie Croyle, Matt Moore (not leaving the Panthers).

Seriously which one of those QBs are gonna be made the #2 after Smith?

As for Hill remaining the #2 despite Nate Davis clearly establishing that he can make the throws that Hill can't, look no further than Ahmad Brooks or Vernon Davis.

Say what you will about Singletary's Xs and Os, but he will take a player with potential and raw talent and have them playing well.

I don't mean it as a personal swipe to you, but it seems irrational to not develop a QB whose shown potential in order to maintain a status quo of mediocrity.
So many of you live in a fantasy world, and create a false reality in your mind. Because Alex is our current QB, you see his good plays and his bad ones. Since you are biased, you focus on his bad ones and ignore or trivialize his good ones.

In the case of Nate, you have created this fabulous QB in your mind. But translating talent into consistent results against strong opponents in regular season games is an entirely different story. Observe how few promising QBs make it big in the NFL. Look at all the highly-acclaimed, high-draft choice QBs that came out of college the last few years, and look at how few have performed anyway near what one might have expected.

Remember how many of you had annointed JTO as our savior? We saw how that turned out. Then you jumped on Hill, and that false dream fell apart. Smith started out encouraging, but after awhile opponents found schemes to take advantage of our weaknesses.

Odds are heavy that Nate would be no different. He has weakness, no doubt, and opponents would exploit them. Eventually, you would be looking for another savior.

let the guy sit and learn! What is so hard to understand about this.

Why, he is better than Smith right now, he just needs the reps to learn the system. He is a stud in the pocket and can take a hit like big Ben. He needs some reps I don't understand why people don't see this.

The arm strength, the poise, the stepping up in the pocket and making the throw. Scrambles and makes plays not throws the ball out of bounds and mroe accurate catchable balls. THis is clear with no practice, imagine what HE could do with an off season. Thanks for this clip, bravo.

Nate Davis is not the answer. 1 pre season win ain't s#$@ I don't know what the hype is about this guy. Just like Shaun Hill was over hyped. I say give Alex 1 more year with a better O-line and maybe Reggie Bush receiving out the back field and see what he can do. I wouldn't mind bringing in Vick and letting Smith go and using our draft picks and free agency on other needs as the risk of drafting a 1st round QB is a risk we don't need to take.

this is why us noobs are givin such a hard time here on the zone
