What are the thought on Shemar Stewart? 6'6 290lbs 21yrs old with a 40" vertical is insane. Haven't bothered looking at him cause his stats are so lack luster but when I did dude can straight collapse the pocket and is pretty good on the edge. I wouldn't take him at #11 but wouldn't mind trading back for him

I would like to know what Kris Kocurek thinks of him? Would he stand on the table for him, despite low sack numbers?

Freaks with little production rarely pan out last one that did that I can think of is DK Metcalf. Hes really young just turned 21 a few months ago so there's room to develop. I really like what I see but we're not really in a position to gamble

I keep going back and forth on the kid. I've been saying for months that the best way to eliminate busts for us is to avoid projects, unproven players, injury risks or off the field problem players early on.
Yet I can't help but think of what if with Stewart in our scheme.
I also have 0 doubts that unless they found something we don't know about with the kid that Coach K is in love.
He was the Lions DL coach when they drafted another athletic freak with low sack production in college in Ziggy Ansah who was a pretty good player for the Lions.
I can definitely see them thinking his issues with finishing were more to how A&M has the guys playing and our attacking defense would be a much better fit for him…also helps that he's been great at playing the run on the edge.
His play at the senior bowl is also a big plus. I know we love senior bowl guys.
I'd love to trade down and grab him but also wouldn't be shocked if they rolled the dice at 11 for him.

Stewart has all the physical measurements to be one of the more dominant all around DE from this deep 2025 DL draft class and potentially in the NFL too.
Yes the lack of sacks in college are worrisome but if you watch film of him, not just highlights, he does get "close" many times and disrupts plays but he just doesn't have the finishing stats you want like with sack totals. 44.7 tackling grade by PFF and his 39 QB pressures shows the roller coaster type play Stewart showed this past college year.
According to PFF Stewart only had 106 "true pass rush sets" in 2024 ranking 74th in this draft class, which maybe a reason why his pass rush stats don't jump out like other DL who are projected as 1st round picks especially in this 2024 draft. His 88.2 run defense grade was 5th among 2024 edge defenders in this draft class only behind Green of those projected to go in the 1st round too and we know how poor the 49ers DL was in run defense this past season.
I also remember a lot of 49ers fans had the same issue when 49ers drafted Armstead in the 1st round in 2015 saying how 49ers took a huge reach on a player many viewed as a late 1st or even early 2nd round pick. That's even after 49ers traded down from #15 to #17 to draft him.
Same lack of on field production was the big issue too after Armstead only had 4 sacks in 35 career games at Oregon during his college career but he had the really high end physical traits as a DL especially for one of his size and or stature. But you could also argue in terms of physical traits Stewart >>>> Armstead.
Armstead - 6'7 1/8" , 292 lbs , 33" arms , 10 1/2" hands , 5.10 40 , 1.75 10 yard split , 34" vertical , 9'9" broad jump
Stewart - 6'5" , 267 lbs , 34 1/8" arms , 9 5/8" hands , 4.59 40 , 1.58 10 yard split , 40" vertical , 10'11" broad jump
It'd help that the 49ers have one of if not the best DL coach in the business who could help aid in Stewart reaching his sky high ceiling on the field. I would think his input and opinion would be heavily sought after for any DL the 49ers drafted high. Although the Thomas pick in 2017 and Kinlaw pick in 2020 were big swings and misses. As was the 2022 2nd round pick Jackson also who at this time looks like a bust too. But he also has a longer history of turning DL into studs both with the 49ers and elsewhere. With high picks or players the 49ers acquired without using top assets be it draft picks, under the radar trades, or affordable free agent signings.
I mean I think he was with the Lions when they drafted Ansah 5th overall in 2013 who was himself a freakish athlete but lacked big time production of a high 1st round pick and in particular top 5 pick in college. Only had 4.5 sacks 31 games in his 3 years of college at BYU. Ansah didn't become a superstar, as a pro as he was only a 1x pro bowler and all pro in 2015 with a 14.5 sack season. But he had some really nice years with the Lions to start his NFL career where he racked up 8, 7.5, 14.5, 12 sack seasons in 4 of his first 5 years.
Ansah - 6'5 1/4" , 271 lbs , 35 1/8" arms , 10 1/4" hands , 4.63 40 , 1.62 10 yard split , 34 1/2" vertical , 9'10" broad jump
Hunter with the Vikings has been one of the best edge pass rusher in the NFL also follows the suit of being a physical freak who didn't have high college production stats with also only 4.5 sacks in 38 games at LSU in 3 year. He's had 8 seasons with 10+ sacks in 10 years of play in the NFL. Although big difference is he was a 3rd round pick in 2015 where as Stewart probably will be drafted in the 1st round somewhere .
Hunter - 6'5 1/8" , 251 lbs , 34 1/4" arms , 10 1/2" hands , 4.57 40 , 1.57 10 yard split , 36 1/2" vertical , 10'10" broad jump
Sometimes you "bet" on physical skill sets and upside more so than production and it can pay off big. Especially in this case with Stewart who's is right there with Garrett in terms of being an elite physical freak of nature coming out of college.
Garrett (2017) - 6'4 1/2" , 272 lbs , 35 1/4" arms , 4.64 40 , 1.63 10 yard split , 41" vertical , 10'8" broad jump
Stewart (2025) - 6'5" , 267 lbs , 34 1/8" arms , 4.59 40 , 1.58 10 yard split , 40" vertical , 10'11" broad jump
As of now Stewart or Nolan with the 49ers first pick I wouldn't object to and even better if 49ers could trade down 3 or 4 spots into the mid teens, pick up a 3rd round pick, and still be in a position to draft either of them with their first pick.

Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane. A combination of boom or bust on top of being a project. A&M seems to have started to struggle developing defensive line guys all of the sudden.

That's tough between the two, Nolan could end up like Warren Sapp making everyone regret not taking him. I think I take Stewart just cause edge is more important and even if he hasn't gotten to the qb he's shown he can stop the run with the rumors of Nolan attitude and how erratic he plays I wonder if he's going off assignment? So did Stewart play at 290lbs but cut down to 270lbs for the combine? I see two different weights when I look him up

Something is up with Texas A&M dline philosophy. They got 4 guys probably going to get drafted and non of them had a lot of production. Nic Scourton was a beast at Purdue and then transferred to A&M and his stats plummeted. Walter Nolan transferred out and his stats went up.
I just don't know how much stock you can put on these kids stats. But yeah it's kinda worrisome too.

I've got to do more on him, but I watched the Texas game, he barely won a rep until the 4th quarter, let alone get any pressures. He had one nice play near the end but he pretty much just ran into the tackle and eventually made his way round and showed some burst.
He also didn't get any of the treatment I'd expect a great threat to get. Didn't slide protection towards him or roll away from him often, no chipping, no doubles and still no production. It worries me a lot. I'm begging the Saints to take him at #9 to end this. Remember they took Davenport based on his physical ability. If they don't it'll be another flag, unless they take McMillan which is what they should do.

also why does the thread title say 290, when he weighed 267 at the combine?

Have the 49ers had a meeting with him? I feel like if they love his attitude he might be the pick
