Niners have definitely missed DJ Jones and his presence as a run stuffing NT ever since he left for Denver. Kinlaw for all of his physical gifts can't stay healthy and showed in the Eagles game that he can't hold the point of attack in the run game. Niners need to rebuild the DT rotation around Armstead in this draft by getting one pure NT and then one more DT IMO. Here are the top 10 NT prospects in this draft according to Drafttek.com by their overall ranking:
29 Siaki Ika
Baylor
6'3" 350 lbs
81. Keeanu Benton
Wisconsin
6'4" 317 lbs
95. Mazi Smith
Michigan
6'3" 326 lbs
161. P.J. Mustipher
Penn State
6'4" 329 lbs
167. Keondre Coburn
Texas
6'2" 346 lbs
182. Cameron Young
Mississippi State
6'3" 315 lbs
189. Jerrod Clark
Coastal Carolina
6'4" 345 lbs
277. Robert Cooper
Florida State
6'2" 338 lbs
348. Jerron Cage
Ohio State
6'2" 310 lbs
453. Brodric Martin
Western Kentucky
6'5" 330 lbs
If the Niners are lucky, Benton will last to the late 3rd round or they could get Jerrod Clark or Cameron Young in the fifth round.

Byron Young or Jaquelin Roy? I do like Mazi smith. His numbers don't do him justice.
I feel like K Davis is that penetrator that we like inside, but we need someone that can anchor and overall that's not really his game.

Benton looks like the best fit to me this year from the draft class for NT

Maybe we can get a couple other positional group threads? Might be better than every day 3 prospect getting their own thread lol

I agree with everything you said but I still haven't posted my sleeper pick that will inevitably become a 49er.

Isn't a NT specific to a 3-4 scheme?

It really refers to where the DT lines up. A nose tackle generally lines up right over the center, so a DT in a 4-3 can still be considered a NT. In regards to rosters or depth charts, yes you will usually see a 4-3 defense list all as DT while a 3-4 will list them as NT.

Byron Young the DT from Alabama could have made this list as he has played all across the line during his career, but Roy is more like an AA, one gap penetrating DT. A mix of one run stuffing NT and another one gap penetrator would be ideal for the Niners in this draft. Need to get the d line rotation built back up IMO.

I like Mazi Smith but dude will probably be outta range maybe late 2nd high 3rd. I also like Keondre Coburn, what I like about him is that he's not just a blob and actually plays with decent leverage when he's not on the field too long. I think he'd be a good rotational player with Hasaan Ridgeway. I thought he looked pretty good vs Oklahoma.

Every defensive scheme has a nose tackle. It's a position that's been relegated to base downs since the boom of the passing game in the NFL, but as last season showed the 49ers, they're still very important.
The true differences is in the techniques. The 49ers' use a penetrating 2i nose in their base wide 9, which means he lines up over the inside shoulder of the weakside guard. What makes playing nose in this scheme so pivotal is the massive spacing(bubbles) between the defensive line. It puts a lot of strain on the two interior defensive lineman to stay in their gaps and not get displaced against a barrage of double teams, which is exactly how teams attack this defense.
One thing the last few seasons has taught us is that we need to move away from these undersized 280-290 pound interior DL. 49ers have used these guys like relievers in baseball where they're asked to come off the bench and give max effort for a few plays. Unfortunately, when we're forced to rely on them, they become massive liabilities. 49ers need to add serious BEEF inside. 300+ dudes that are athletic enough to get upfield and strong enough to withstand/defeat double teams. They had the right idea with Javon Kinlaw. It just didn't work out, but that's the type of bodies we need inside.

Brodric Martin is a dude. If not FA, Benton is my first choice. If he's off the board too early, my fingers would be crossed for Brodric.

Honestly, depending on who they resign, I can see the justification to draft 1 to 3 DT. The DJ Jones role 8s obvious. Id like to draft one early and one late, then let them battle it out. We have Davis on the roster, but I'd like to possibly add another penetrator. Or even a player that can fill the Arden Key role.
Get the young guys and Armstead holding it down inside and our vets on the edge. Of course, numbers come into play because we will only carry 10 guys.

As a longhorn fan I can say Coburn is very DJ Jones-ish. He is a bowling ball (like DJ Jones) with a great attitude. But he is a developmental guy. Not foing to have an impact right out of the gate. I hope they make a big move in FA (doubt it) and go after a legit dude to plug in next to AA, but having Coburn on the roster to learn would be a great move.

How about let's trade up to the mid 2nd if a player like Siaki Ika, Keanu Benton or Calijah Kancey, a 3rd this year, 3rd next and Kinlaw lol
