A guy like Polite or Burns or Ferguson could fall into the 20s and we can get one of the them PLUS Quinnen Williams.

So by this logic you should pass on Nick Bosa too?

The "hey, just trade back into the early 20s for a pass rusher and get both!" strategy assumes way, way, way, way too much.

You don't trade back to target players, you trade back to get future picks understanding there are a number of players you like, and though some would go you'd be happy to settle.

A trade up from #36 could specifically target someone.

Sorry, I mean "trade back" into the 1st round from the 2nd.

Far too many assumptions to count on that. For starters, they might not even be available. Also, the cost may include a future 1st -- a non-starter.

I don't think it does because it's almost guaranteed that players will drop. Teams also love stockpiling picks, so every single draft teams can find opportunities to move up. Having an early pick in the 2nd round gives us a legit shot to move up.

The real question is if Lynch wants to be aggressive or not.
I like Polite, I've just finished watching his cut ups, obviously his burst it where he makes his living, he can bend and flip his hips, and uses his hands well in doing it, though there's still more growth to do there and he can be a bit of a snap guesser.

I was impressed with how much he set tackles up with speed and then either flipped a nasty spin move or a better than advertised speed to power.

His run D needs a lot of work, he gets turned out of his gap far too easily by Tackles and even by TE's.

He's a situational pass rusher for us, he won't crack our Snickel and unless Saleh softens his stance he won't play on first downs period.

That said we need someone to get us off the field on 3rd down and to seal games for us when teams are driving late on, Polite fits the bill in that respect.

Watching some of his cut ups. Can't complain about the pass rush. But his run D is boarderline atrocious.

Even the "quality" reps people are posting include him getting blown off the LOS by three yards. I dunno man. We should have exceptionally high expectations for 1st round talent.

He brings effort there's no questioning that. But if he can't get it done -- it really doesn't matter how hard he's trying. Solomon Thomas gives effort too. Need 3 down production from 1st round talent. Also, there are A LOT of pass rush options in this draft.

I truly hope he is playing much lighter than his listed 240 pounds. Because if he is actually 240 -- yikes. Dude gets tossed around.

The problem is the guys that some here are assuming will drop. I can't imagine Burns or Polite dropping too far and my eggs are not in the basket of Sweat or Ferguson being our answer at edge, let alone worth trading back up into the 1st round for.
We don't got s**t to trade up with anyways. We have like 5 picks. Unless you're trying to send 2020 picks

Edit:

What about QW with the 2nd pick. Then using our 2020 first to trade up from the second to grab an edge like polite in the middle of the first. Just like the saints did in the 2018 draft. If everyone is healthy , we'll be picking in the late 20s to 32 anyways. Ballsy move, but f**k it. Sooner or later gotta just go for it.

I think a 2019 + 2020 2nd round draft pick would be plenty enough to move up looking at the value chart. Didn't we only trade a 4th round pick for Reuben?

We gave a 4th to move up three picks from 34 to 31

Saints gave up a 5th rounder and 2019 first rounder to move from 27 to 14

We'd be moving from 34 to somewhere around 15-20 probably in the scenario I'm talking about. Not sure how the board will look.

f**k yeah I'd be down with this! This is the draft to gamble for that edge with multiple nice looking prospects we absolutely have to get one

I believe we'll have pick 36. If Polite and Burns show up weighing ~250, they could both go in the top 15 easy. IMO, a 250 lb Burns could easily go top 5.

Nah I don't think top 5. Top 5 players at this point would be:
Bosa, Q, Allen, Haskins (if he declares) and Jonah Williams
