If we spend another high 1st-round pick on a DL, I will be...

Its not a swiss army knife deal at all. Just think of it as being a 3-4 OLB that can pass rush. 3-4 OLBs in nickel play DE like Aldon and Brooks did for us.

Totally agree I'd rather have a speed rusher like the guys you mentioned above. Chubb isn't really that.

Someone like Marquise Haynes in the 2nd would be nice....dude has length and speed just need to get stronger. Could be our edge guy

If Lynch comes out of the 2nd rd with a WR like Ridley and a top pass rusher, I think we should be pretty happy. OL needs should be addressed in FA...there will be a number of good young interior OL available. Douzable has given Lynch more to think about WRT the DL...plus, Thomas, Buckner, Armstead & Co should all be better next season. He already has Mitchell's heir apparent in DJ Jones, so I wouldn't worrry about JL taking another DL in the 1st rd.

Trade down for Ridley and take Haynes in the 2nd

Hell yeah...they could probably get him with one of our 3rds.

I'm liking Ridley more and more. Wish he was a little thicker though. Great speed/route-running is the tits, long arms. If jimmy G is as accurate as we think could be a great duo for yrs.

I see Haynes as a Ngakoue type edge guy, he's gotta eat a couple steaks though lol.
Haynes reminds me more of Bruce Irvin-type than Ngakoue. Twitchy, speedy rusher with what appears to be good length. Irvin was also really undersized at WVU, but I think he had a slightly bigger frame for more size to be added at the NFL level, which proved to be the case(he put on close to 30 lbs ). I wasn't in on Irvin until he put up eye-popping numbers at the combine. If Haynes can do that, I'm in.

Haynes and Irvin both have that fast-twitch fiber narrow mesomorphic build.

If you want Ngakoue, Jeff Holland is your man.

You know what you're right Ngakoue was a little bigger coming out of college (252) than I thought
Yeah, I like the Irvin-type comp for Haynes. He needs to perform at the combine, tho. I want to quantify what type of athleticism he's got. He's going to be 24 years old in a month. That is another knock on him.

On the topic of adding weight, I think all the weight Bruce Irvin put on over the years stunted his growth as a pass rusher. He became a dominant edge setter in run defense, but he lost most of the twitch and speed that made him electric coming out of college.

Bruce Irvin's rookie HL video is nasty. Dude was insanely twitched up. Sometimes it's better to leave things alone if they're not broken.

Edge or trade down.

Do you still count a pass rushing SAM that can slide to the elephant in nickel as an edge?

To be honest I have had enough of Swiss Army penknife players who can do a bit of this and a bit of that. I want an edge rusher who will become feared around the NFL for getting to the qb and bringing him down. If he has flexibility and can line up in other positions on the line then that is a bonus I guess.

My understanding of the SAM in a 4-3 is that he frequently ends up tackling the running back. Actually I think our running D is ok and potentially rather good. I just was someone to get after the qb.

Vic Beasley is the SAM in ATL

Yeah, whatever anyone says, there is always exceptions. Don't bother drafting a qb high because Brady went low. And for this, there is Von Miller and Beasley etc. But that isn't what I said. I didn't say the pass rush couldn't come from the linebackers, like Lynch. I said I want an edge rusher who will pretty much just get after the qb.

A SAM can still get to the QB. You think an elephant in base is a pure pass rusher and doesn't have to play the run as well? Cmon man, step your game up

Yup this
A Sam will rush 80% of the time in this d. Basically he'd take Dumervil's spot in nickel/ then in base still it's split.

I'm really not seeing a top tier 1st rounder though. Dorial Armstrong Jr. tops the mocks with Sam potential but he's got 1 sack.
Tremaine Edmunds is a first round talent

There is no certainty that he declares for the 2018 NFL Draft but junior linebacker Tremaine Edmunds has all the traits necessary to warrant a selection among the first 32 this spring. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Edmunds looks like a defensive end but has the mobility of an off-ball linebacker.

Edmunds offers a combination of length, power, burst and processing skills that enables him to make all over the field. He particularly excels at playing forward against the run but has ability as both a pass rusher and in coverage. There are some grumblings that Edmunds may return to Virginia Tech but I believe he should be starting as a 4-3 strong side linebacker in the NFL.

Against Pitt, Edmunds racked up 7 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and 2 quarterback hurries.
