"Hey it's ____. We're still working through our draft board and wanted to reach out to a few of the teams around our pick. We'll have a better idea of where we stand in a couple weeks, but wanted to get the conversation going if you had interest in moving up."

This stuff isn't complicated. Everybody is doing their due diligence -- with prospects they may take, and trades they may make.

Why do fans continue to think teams put out smokescreens? What possible purpose would it serve when the entire league is skeptical of any news they hear regarding favorites. Nobody is getting fooled. A team could not say a single thing to anybody and fans, media and/or opposing teams would just make stuff up to fill in the blanks.

I've been watching the draft almost 20 years and discussing it on he for more than 10+ years and I very well think teams send out smokescreens. I think if a team is really serious about moving down they send out a few signals that they like so and so in hopes of getting a team to bite.

Teams don't need to "send out signals" to see if a deal can get done. They just call each other. It's not a middle school dance. There are only 32 GMs -- they all know each other. They will haggle over the price, and perhaps wait it out until draft day to see how things unfold. But these guys trade with each other all the time. No smoke screens needed.

BTW -- if a GM -- getting paid millions of dollars -- has a fire lit under him due to a "smokescreen" then that dude should cease being a GM. Falling for fake news is a sin.

Hmmm that simple huh, they just call each other!!! And what do you think is in that conversation since you seem to know how teams operate? I mean if all that you say is true, why doesn't a team just come out and say, 'well right now we're thinking about drafting Jonathan Allen, but that could change if Myles Garrett falls to us'.?

You can't be serious. This is a total layup.

I can't be serious WTF!!!

Check you out acting like you know what's being said between NFL teams. I mean if there weren't smokescreens, then tell me what the 49ers are gonna do in this upcoming draft? Shoot, tell me what are the Browns gonna do (with credible sources of course)?

Again, you still didn't answer my question on why teams don't just come out and announce who they are looking to DRAFT or boldly talk about their draft board?

I'm just surprised this is your question.

Telling people you think smokescreens exist requires the same amount of "insider knowledge" as saying they don't.

Right on for avoiding it, I guess that's one way of saying you don't know.

Chargers were rumored to be taking Ronnie Stanley last year...it was a smokescreen hoping to entice a team to trade up and get in front of Dallas/Jacksonville if they coveted Elliot or Ramsey.

The guy SD truly coveted was Bosa, but they did not want to let that cat out of the bag just in case he would slide to them if they could trade down.

Smokescreens are real in the draft process, teams are trying to misdirect the rest of the league because leaks do happen. Leaks don't always come from teams either, agents play a role in that too by feeding the media.
The draft is just one giant prolonged poker game. Wouldn't trust anything being said.

Adam Schefter‏ @AdamSchefter

Cleveland has not made up its mind at No. 1, per source. Split opinions. Some like Myles Garrett, some like Mitchell Trubisky. We will see.

Looking at the way the approached the draft last year I bet they are interested in trading out of the #1.

People were actually falling for the Thomas / Allen / Hooker hype, when there are clearly only 2 players who will go in the top 2: Garrett & Trubisky (and not necessarily in that order).

At this point it's almost safe to say that 7 out of every 10 professional mock draft has us taking Thomas.

Lol it's going to be Garrett. Don't let Cleveland evaluating all their options as due diligence and feeling that Trubisky is the only one that comes close fool you.
Smokescreens are smoky

We'll find out soon enough.
