Solomon Thomas--Stanford

Not really. Guys with no off the field flags, no character flags, no injury issues, productive players, stepped up in big games, regarded as strong team leaders, hard workers....etc. Find all of the above and that is about as close to a gimme as it gets.

Anyone can bust but at #2 I see Thomas and Adams as the safest choices available for all the factors listed above.

How can we not take need into account? Let me put it this way:

Let's pretend that Solomon Thomas and Derek Barnett have almost the same grade. Who are you picking? A dt/de for the third straight year? Or a Leo?

Doesn't need have to play into the thought process?

Why are we pretending that though? The whole point of this conversation is who the best player is. Let's pretend Colin Kaepernick is as good as Tom Brady, maybe we don't actually need a QB if we just bring him back?

Yes if two guys have the same grade the deciding factor is who fits your need bigger but if the grade is higher on one guy then you take him...Thomas should be BPA and he actually addresses a need.

So now you do think need is a factor. Well, an undersized tweener who struggles against big guards isn't really a need. We have DT talent and depth (except at NT).

We have very little pass rush talent and depth, and have a giant hole in our secondary.

If there is an elite talent available at a position of need, we should take him (assuming ofc, that we're stuck at 2). We don't need another DT. We need pass rush or our hole in the secondary filled. Both of which, id rather fill with Barnett or Hooker, both of whom I see as better players than Solomon.

A slow, low motor 6'7 DE and a guy the Dolphins cut for not being good enough on a bottom tier defense constitute depth?

A guy who, when healthy graded out very high and a guy that was chased by defenses we're trying to emulate do.

Starting to feel like it did with Buckner a year ago.

Sure when you cherrypick stats for pass rushing but ignore him getting blown up in the run game or simply giving up on plays and being a spectator. Youre far more optimistic about Armstead than most.

At this point I'd be psyched if he could just be an average lineman.

You're far more pessimistic than most about AA, and you cherry picked first, which is why I posted what I did, to call it out.

Giant hole in our secondary? that was one of the only good things we had going last yr...Solomon isn't just a DT he's a DE that can play from the zero to the 9 tech.

Why is Barnett looked at as a pure pass rusher when he's slower, has shorter arms then Solomon, and isn't as athletic why can't Lynch move over to the LEO position? He's got the speed and length, just needs to lose a couple lbs in a contract yr.

No, I'm really not. He has a lot to prove.

Ward is far more accomplished in the NFL than Armstead yet you have no problem pushing Hooker in front of him, convinced that he will be a better player but for some reason confident that Armstead is ready to blow up and be the franchise DL stud QB killer #1.

Whats up with that?

Giant hole, yes. Who is playing Single high FS. if ward, then who's starting at cb?

A guy that can play all over the line sounds really nice. Can he be a stud Leo? I don't see it.

Barnett - I just watch games. I don't care much about broad jumps or spandex. Barnett gets in the backfield and he gets home. Barnett got more sacks, he got more TFLs, he broke Reggie Whites sack record. He's the second best Leo available.

You go back and forth selling Thomas as a Leo, then as a DT. Which is he - is he Justin smith or Chris Avril? If he's both, then he's the best player in the draft, and one of the best in draft history.
