Rams deal is the best thing to happen for the niners!

Yup. These QBs are pretty mediocre as far as top 10 QBs go. This is fantastic news for a rebuilding team. We can focus on real talent, not inflated talent.

So, what about the rest of the QB's that will be available down the board in this draft? The Niners need to address the QB position, especially if a Kaep trade finally happens. Would you rather pick from the two best options or a handful of even worse options?

1. We are almost guareenteed a top defensive player at 7 now. Before probadly our only option at 7 would have been Buckner, now there's a chance Jack or Bosa falls to us. This also increases the value of our pick.

2. It's likely that 2 QBs going that high, 1 or both would be busts. Now Trent does not have to worry about a QB in round 1 he can focus on what he does best defense.

3. Even if the QB that the Rams take is good that's a lot of potential talent that will not be going on their roster the next 2 seasons. Whoever they take probadly won't even start til year 2.

4. We are sitting in the perfect spot to trade back with Tennesee so that they can get Stanley. Reports said they couldn't decide if Tunsil or Stanley was better. They give us pick 45 to move up 1500=1500 on the Trade Value Chart.

5. If the Rams take the QB that the Browns had decided on they might bypass a QB all together or attempt to trade down with us at a cheaper price during the draft.

Your first four points WERE ON POINT, esp the 4th point. Stanley could be the PERFECT trade bait for the 49ers. They could move back to fifteen and select Shaq Lawson. I know Baalke loves him and he may be worth selecting at 15.

Not he guy I'm hoping for

BUT - getting Lawson and extra pick[s] would also be a very good win for us.

This. The reality is that after Goff and Wentz there is a huge dropoff. Both of those guys are franchise caliber QB prospects, after them you have a whole lot of projects, backup quality QB's and little else.

There really isn't much else out there. Cook is like Kaepernick minus the athletic ability. Prescott I like but he is a project. Hogan is an NFL backup. Brissett is a project. Hackenberg is a project. There's not really a single guy that looks to be ready to contribute as a quality starter in a season.

When there is an Andrew Luck, you aren't getting him unless you have the #1 pick so that is a pointless comment to make. The Browns offered Indy their next two drafts and Indy turned them down. When you have a guy who is that obvious of a prospect, nobody will trade out of that slot.

Yet guys who weren't so obvious such as Big Ben, Flacco and Rodgers all have SB rings. When you don't have a QB, you'd happily pay out the ass for any one of those guys.

I think they need a QB in this draft, sure. But I don't see the benefit of trading up (which is what it will take) to get either of these guys.

Yes, Goff and Wentz (unfortunately for us) the best this draft can offer. That doesn't mean you mortgage the future to get a QB you don't feel can be a franchise guy.

Let's put it another way -- if Baalke/Kelly through either one of these guys was a lock to be a "franchise" QB -- they would have made the move to get one already.

Not to mention the prize for not trading up is exceptional. Ramsey/Jack/Buckner/Bosa will be there at #7. And we have adequate firepower to move back into the 1st for another instant starter. If not, having another early 2nd round pick in a draft deep with defensive talent is a good situation.

That said -- I think Baalke thinks he has something with Gabbert/Kelly and wants to see it play out.

People are losing their minds over not landing Goff/Wentz like somehow that wasn't the most obvious outcome.

This isn't a surprise, folks.

Honestly I don't think Bosa can fit in our scheme but its hard to deny that talent. if Bosa was the only blue chip player left, Id pull the trigger. Stanley is riddled with bust potential.

Detained by by police, suspended at OSU, questions about him taking ecstasy, apparently he is a big partier that loves to go to raves, just a lot of stuff that has come out that has reportedly caused teams like Dallas to lose interest.

Trent will take him.

We need to focus on offense for once

He head to to replace all pro/pro bowl players .. .it was more than necessary and it is now...a qb in the 2nd between cook and prescott may even have to trade up to late first

Exactly anybody should be opento blaine, i think he will be what we need for the now we draft for the future...blaine can play he did last year, know he has competence above him and someone that will play to his strengths

Good post! I'm not sad that the QBs will be gone as I was on the fence between a QB and a potentially great defensive player already. Now they take a Buckner, Bosa or Jack...fine with me. The good news for me is that I don't see Kelly ruining a young QBs career as Nolan almost did to Smith. His system seems to be QB friendly so Gabbert or CK may blossom under his tutelage. If not, he will likely draft a player and then look forward to next year.
I'm happy with the trade the Rams just made for a few reasons.

1. Sfbuckeye, stated that it gives us a chance to nab a top defensive talent at 7. Absolutely correct. Assuming both qbs go 1 and 2, and San Diego goes LT at #3. Also assuming the Niners were staying defensive the whole time, this trade essentially moves them up to the 4th overall pick in the draft. An elite pass rusher will be there.

2. This was a very risky move for the Rams. The only way this works out for them is if their guy is the next Brady-Manning-Rodgers-etc. Not even a Matt Ryan or Carson Palmer is worth that draft capital. The Rams are terrible offensively and don't have any weapons other than Gurley for their new franchise QB. By trading these picks they have a very small chance of landing any superstar offensive weapons in the next 2 years.
The Rams do have cap room, but so do other teams. They could try to supplement in free agency, but landing a superstar WR, TE, O-line will be difficult given that other teams will be in play. And even if Wentz-Goff turn out to be elite, I think we have until 2018-2019 to be ready for it. The Rams have a ton of holes on offense. They would need some miracle off-season next year to fill these needs with elite talent. With Keenum, Foles, and their 3rd round QB pick Sean Mannion from last year, the Rams can afford to sit their new #1 pick for a time to learn the system. This gives the Niners more time to build defensively, but also more time to look for their franchise QB.

All in all I think this moves stalls the Rams. As one Rams poster said on turfshowtimes, by 2020, Robert Quinn, Trumane Johnson, Mark Barron, Michael Brockers, Lamarcus Joyner will all be hitting their 30's. Tj McDonald, Aaron Donald, tavon Austin, Alex Ogletree will be 29. These players will still be young, but entering the downturn of their careers. Some of these players will still be playing for them and some won't due to injuries and free agency.

I think the Rams were better off keeping the picks, getting receiver and online help. And keep building the defense. With all those picks they could have nabbed another QB prospect to develop.

The whole premise of this thread was the Niners were in a BETTER position because the Rams made this blockbuster trade. Before the trade, the Niners were predicted by many to pick either Goff or Wentz without having to trade up. The Niners could still move up to #2 if Cleveland is dumb enough to ignore their biggest need, too. Bottom line, the Niners chances of grabbing one of the two best prospects at a position of need are now almost zero, and that isn't a good thing. If you honestly think the Niners think they may "have something" with one average QB, one disgruntled QB who wants out, Thad Lewis and Dylan Thompson.............you have to rethink your standards.

It also puts the 49ers in a worse position in bargaining with Denver. Lynch was expected to be gone at 15 to the Rams, that obviously won't happen, he could fall for awhile which might make it far easier for the Broncos to move up for him, at which point the Kaepernick trade is really dead and the 49ers are stuck with a QB that doesn't want to be there and that they don't want.
Many analysts believe Goff and Wentz are mid-first round picks talent wise, at best, but because it's a weak QB year they jump up to the top of the round. If this is true then why over-value these guys? Yes, it's the most important position to fil, but Gabbert is proof that it doens't always work out...and history tells us it's less likely to work out than not...over reaching. When you have three or four defensive players much more NFL ready and blue chip certain my choice would be pretty straight forward...go for the BPA.

And you have many analysts who think that they are as good as any QB that has come out recently. Greg Cosell has compared Wentz to Luck and Goff to Mariota in terms of their talent levels.

I don't buy the whole "these guys are only there because there is nobody else" rhetoric. They are perfectly good prospects in their own right. People get down on them because neither of them rode the same train of hype that other QBs have had in recent years. That doesn't make them undeserving of their draft slotting.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000647484/article/top-10-quarterback-draft-prospects-since-2011

Rankings of QB prospects since 2011.

1. Andrew Luck (2012 draft, No. 1 overall): He was about as flawless a quarterback prospect as I can remember. He was the highest grade I've ever given to a quarterback in my time of scouting. He checked every single box.

2. Cam Newton (2011 draft, No. 1 overall): You talk about somebody with a unique skill set. He had a rare size, speed combination. Newton was somebody who in the biggest moments played his absolute best.

3. Robert Griffin III (2012 draft, No. 2 overall): Coming out of college, I had a huge grade on RGIII. He was in that same draft class with Andrew Luck, and he could do some things that Luck couldn't do. So there's a reason why you could get excited about RGIII; the mobility, the live arm, and he was very accurate coming out of Baylor.

4. Jameis Winston (2015 draft, No. 1 overall): He just got better each and every week throughout his rookie season. At Florida State, you saw somebody who took command and control of that offense. The big knock on him was those interceptions in his last year at Florida State.

5. Teddy Bridgewater (2014 draft, No. 32 overall): Bridgewater famously had a poor pro day, but then was able to get in with a team, the Minnesota Vikings, and offensive coordinator, Norv Turner, that was a good matchup for him. I think he's going to develop into a very good quarterback. Coming out of Louisville, I loved the accuracy, and the toughness is what stood out the most to me.

6. Marcus Mariota (2015 draft, No. 2 overall): Coming out of Oregon, the offense was a criticism. You knew the ability was there, and he had a great rookie season cut short by injury. Mariota's a special athlete with the potential to be a great quarterback.

7. Carson Wentz (2016 draft): This is kind of the company he keeps, which is good company here right next to Marcus Mariota.

8. Jared Goff (2016 draft): He has a very similar grade to Wentz. I love the accuracy and toughness, which is very similar to Bridgewater.
