Let's face it, neither 2016 or 2017 are exactly teeming with elite QB talent. With Kap, Gabbert and Lewis, no reason to spend a #7 pick on a QB. Pick someone like Prescott or Hogan to develop and stock up on players to shore up other positions. Too many other needs.

And I didn't say anything about Pro Style QB's. But if you're going there a bunch of new generation of pro Style QB's have been coming out of college Jameis Winston, Andrew Luck, Carson Wentz, Matt Ryan, Matt Stafford, Kirk Cousins, Russell Wilson. Notice majority of them have very minimal athleticism?? But I'm actually talking about more Pocket QB's, QB's that run through their progressions I could careless about the 60 yard bombs.
I also wouldn't say Newton is nowhere near as accurate, for one Newton had 66% comp/pct, 1% off of Watson. Also Newton has passed for 4,000 in the NFL and helped guide his team to a Super Bowl. Until Watson does any of that then you can put him in the same sentence with Newton with relevance.
Minimal athleticism? Did you see Luck, Wentz, Wilson at the combine? What do you think Wilson runs? Dude is making a living off of zone read options.
Cam's comp % is currently 59.6 http://www.nfl.com/player/camnewton/2495455/careerstats while Watson is at 67%
I brought up Cam because he's doing what Watson is doing in the NFL and like you said he's going to the SB....Watson won the Heisman and went to the national title game (might not be the SB but that's the best you can do in college lol)...in that game he had 405 yards 4 TDs 63.8 comp % and ran for 75 yards against one of the best college defenses in the game.
I'm on board Goff no doubt, but Watson is a stud...you say MM is far and away better but there stats are very similar.
Why can't we have a QB that is good in the pocket but athletic enough to scramble and make plays with his feet?

Those are exactly the reasons why you draft a QB. Gabbert has been a bust, is a backup level QB whose contract expires after next season. Kaepernick has essentially burned all bridges with the team and will be gone sooner rather than later. Meanwhile Wentz and Goff project out to Top 10-15 QB's in the NFL.
When you don't have a QB, if you got a shot at a potential franchise QB such as those two, you take your shot rather than hoping that one falls in your lap 3 years down the road. No matter what needs a team has, no need is bigger than a future starter at QB.

What? so your cool with possibly have Thompson and someone like Dak or Hogon in 2017? Blaine is a FA after this year and Kap is a one year guy that currently doesn't have a future with the team if he has anything to do with it.
not sure I can get on board with that lol

Totally agree...I'm blown away that people would not want to try and secure the most important position in football
if you have a QB you have a chance in this league, it helps with bringing in FAs as well just look at the Raiders.

Now you're just plain knit picking.....And I said "Majority of them have minimal athleticism".
Cam's comp/pct is from college. Of course we can't compare cmp/pct of Watson and Newton's in the NFL right??

didn't know you were talking about Cam in college with comp %
like I said I don't see the problem with having a QB that can beat you with their arm or feet...Watson has done that in college and almost single handily beat the best team in college football with both.

My problem with QB's that like to move rather than stay in the pocket is that sooner or later NFL defenses figure out their tendencies, especially if they are a one read type of QB.
Seeing all of the Peyton Manning's, Eli Manning's, Tom Brady's, Drew Brees, Ben Roethelisberger's, Aaron Rogers' and even Phillip Rivers constantly be on top of the NFL just makes me pray that one day the 49ers will have a QB like that. You just don't see QB's like Watson dominate the NFL on a regular basis or even be a one hit wonder and just win a Super Bowl. Football is a team sport, if a QB could do it all then Mike Vick would've won 10 Super Bowls by now shoot or even Tim Tebow.

The thing is that Watson isn't a "running QB" per se. He has pretty good pocket presence, he reminds me of Mariota quite a bit, a true duel-threat QB that can actually get it done as a passer and attack on the ground running it. He put up monster yards on a tough Alabama defense filled with NFL players, making good decisions and some very good precise throws, this isn't Tim Tebow or Michael Vick by a long shot. Watson is actually highly skilled as a passer, his mobility is just a bonus whereas for those guys and Kaepernick its a centerpiece of who they are as players.
One more stellar season will solidify Watson as the #1 pick next year. A guy like Watson is the next level of QB, a player who can get it done from inside and outside the pocket. He would be an absolute nightmare to defend in Chip Kelly's scheme.
Bruce Feldman noted that the coach traded texts with NFL peers "and heard back from guys who were similarly impressed by what Watson did Monday night." The 6-foot-2, 205-pound sophomore became the first quarterback to run for 100-plus yards on a Nick Saban defense since Indiana's Antwaan Randle El in 1998. Oh, and he threw for 405 yards and four touchdowns. "Those are NFL players he was going against," the coach said. "He threw with anticipation. He was very accurate. He responded well to adversity. He's a smooth athlete, and he showed he's tough. ... And, it's not like he has the talent around him like (former Clemson star) Tajh Boyd had. Boyd was playing with Pro Bowlers." The preseason Heisman favorite threw for 4,104 yards and ran for 1,105 yards in 2015. "The guy is a fantastic player," Saban said in Monday's postgame scrum.

Honestly I can't say it any better than Phoenix did for you...Watson isn't a run first QB he can beat you with his arm just as much as he can with his feet. He's accurate has a laster rocket arm and can move....give me some of that with chip

I love this kid, honestly and I might get knocked for this, but he reminds me of a young Peyton Manning. This is the QB I'd tank for.
Great QB but who's waiting for the 2018 draft? No me lol.
Right, of course I would take Goff or Wentz if there. No way would I wait for Rosen to come out which might not be till 2019.
I would he's a way better prospect

Still not buying it. I know what I saw, I don't really need cut-n-pasted articles to tell me I saw things differently. Many times I've seen Watson not only go to his first read, but he actually does take off, seriously it's in the vids you posted and this one:
I counted about 12 snaps where he either goes to and stares down his first read, holds onto the ball too long or when his read isn't there he's gone off to the races. Like I stated he's not a progressions guy and IMO I don't see him being successful in the NFL especially where he's projected to go.
Let's get this straight though, I'm not saying he's NOT gonna be a 1st round or possibly top 10 pick. I'm saying I don't see him winning a Super Bowl and being a top 10 QB year in and year out, too many of the same traits in a QB most of us wanna see hit the road.

And when you become an NFL GM, you can convince your owner and fans why you think its a great idea to be a complete bottomfeeder for 2-3 more seasons to have only a chance at a very good QB prospect but a prospect nonetheless that comes with no guarantees whatsoever.

stats don't show that though.
let's look at some "Duel threat" QBs in the league
Wilson had 483 passing attempts this past season in 16 games and Watson had 491 in 15 games so he's throwing the ball
Cam had 495 attempts as well in 16 games Watson had 491 in one less game.
His system isn't a pro style offense were he stands in the pocket going through reads every down....so I wouldn't expect him to do that. MM was in the same boat at OU. Watson did everything he was TOLD to do in that system at a very high level. Also watch his throws they are very accurate (comp 67%) you can't deny that he has a good arm that can make all the throws, I've send fades, slants, deep balls, screens with touch all on the money. He has a quick release and a great pocket presence. Throw that all in with someone that can scramble when need be OR if the play is designed for that (zone-reads) He could be a monster in Chip's offense.
It's cool if you don't believe me but I'm tell you he would be a straight beast with Chip.

Now lets look at rush attempts, Watson has about twice as many as Wilson and Newton, whether it's run first or read-option, it's still not what I want in a QB.
And what is his (Watson) system, it doesn't have to be Pro Style in order to go through reads or progressions (case in point Jared Goff). My thing is this about progressions, if you've been doing that your whole college career whether its just making your first read, staring down your first read or actually going through reads, what makes you think you can just jump in and do it at the Pro level??
Watch his throws, you say? Well like I said, there's no denying that right, obviously that would make him a 1st round pick (or top 10 maybe). BUT, his passes aren't what I'm getting at. I'm not saying Watson has a noodle arm or anything or isn't accurate, I'm saying sooner or later his tendencies as a QB will be figured out, I just don't see him being one of the elites in the NFL.
