Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson - Legit alternative to Jared Goff in 2017?

Garrett...

Fixed that for you. Picking anyone other than Garrett at #1 would be pulling a Browns move. There isn't a consolation prize at 2.

Ouch! But it would have to be Garrett. Trubisky, presumably, has gone to Cleveland. I think I would then see how high I could trade back into the 1st to get a good prospect, using only this year's picks as currency.

I personally wouldn't take Watson at #2, but if Shanny thinks he's the guy for his offense and feels confident that he's gone at 12, then I guess I'm fine with it.

You are right Watson does have star "potential". He also looks at one guy and NEVER comes off of him. If he starts to the right... you can bet he is only throwing to that side or he is going to take off and run.

If you think Deshaun Watson "NEVER comes off" one guy, you clearly have never watched his film. One example:

Watson pump fake to the smoute -> peeks at the wheel -> throws to the skinny post

Your egregious post refuted in one gif, and there's tons of more examples if you actually watch the film.. Your entire post sounds like an evaluation from a biased individual with a very rudimentary understanding of quarterbacking.

Like I said in my previous post, I have no dog in this race. I've been critical of all the quarterbacks. Watson is clearly ahead of his peers and by far the most polished and refined quarterback from a mechanical stand point. There was one quarterback whose mechanics didn't fluctuate when executing different throws to different levels. Watson was very consistent with his throws in every direction to every level. Entire body is in sync and the ball comes out effortlessly. He was the only guy to me that looked like an NFL quarterback today.

Thank you. I honestly don't know where this crap about him not reading defenses or coming off of first options comes from, but I see it regurgitated on here often. Here's an article with stillshot and video breakdowns that debunks this claim yet again with several different plays under various scenarios. It also includes plays where he negotiates the pocket while keeping his eyes downfield.

It is hard for me to believe that Shanahan will be taking a defensive player at #2 overall. Seems like he would be focused on fixing his offense. With that said, Lynch controls the 90 man roster.

I still think Watson is the pick all the way.

Wouldn't be upset with him at all. They are the clear cut top 2 this year

Agreed

Mitchell not on Watson's level, DW was head and shoulders above the rest yesterday.
If Watson is the pick then I'm fine with it. Was leaning Mitch but trust Shanny 100% with this. DW has very good athletic ability, solid arm, big time winner, leader, extremely hard worker and high character guy. I think he will find success at the NFL level, he's been a winner his entire life and has worked for everything he's achieved.
Also if Shanny picks up a vet like Hoyer and wins a handful of games then we will be out of the running for a top flight QB next season, you've got to roll the dice when you have even a remote chance at a franchise QB. If Garrett goes 1, at least it makes our decision easier in terms of what position we will be drafting.

It comes from the fact that that offense calls for limited reads. Doesn't mean he always throws to the first guy or scrambles though because that would be an awful scheme in any level of play.

However that article doesn't show anything different in that Watson rarely stays in the pocket and goes from read to read on the whole field. It's typically one side he has to read and he has to show that he can scan the whole field in the pros when things move a lot faster.

That's almost 100% of college football offenses now. It sure as hell applies to Larry Fedora's spread at UNC. Saying he doesn't make whole-field reads is very different from the people saying he's incapable of coming off the first guy.

I agree with this. I can see a scenario where browns take a QB and we can choose Garrett or the other QB. If Shanny really likes the QB still left, I can see us going QB. We have zero QBs on our roster.

+1

UNC's offense was pretty simple too. Execution is what you judge and while they both did well Watson was better.
