I'll gladly take the safer pick in Goff.

What makes him the safer pick?

To me he does the things which make good NFL QBs better than Wentz at this point. Some may disagree but I love what i've seen from Goff and to me his biggest weaknesses are things easily remedied - like his size and his hands which to me aren't a big deal.

He gets the ball out super fast, has great mechanics, has no fear despite his slim body and moves well in the pocket. Draft him, let him soak up the coaching and improve the team around him then don't look back in 2017.

Better overall mechanics, starter for 3 years, didnt play on a team with overwhelming talent levels that has been rolling teams for 5 years straight and didnt skip a beat when their starting quarterback went down.

I think Wentz has higher upside but I see Goff as the better QB right now.

That's a good point. I'm warming up to Wentz but still don't understand how people see him as a clear cut #1 QB in this class. He played against weaker competition but his team as Phoenix said was damn good for that level of comp. By all accounts the kid is a great guy and has great leadership abilities and all that jazz..but how will he fare on a team like Cleveland where losing is part of the territory? Can he deal with loss after loss and beat down after beatdown?

We know Goff can...considering he got his ass whooped as a true freshman on an awful team and he only got better. If Goff can find a way to add weight to his frame he'd only get better. Wouldn't surprise me if his arm improved in the process.

Do we not recall how this guy looked heading into the draft?

Stop with Brady stuff...for every tom Brady there are a thousand Scott tolzien's lol.

Did you watch wentz's pro day? Dude look much better than Goff (yes I realize it's just a pro day). I don't really care about level of comp as much as can he make NFL throws, can he run a NFL offense, can he be a leader. Dude checked all those boxes over and over again. I love Goff as well but if we had a chance to chose one id have to go with the bigger and stronger player that does add the mobility factor that chip hasn't had in the NFL.

I'll throw this in here....

NFL Media draft analyst Mike Mayock said that he's "more convinced than ever" that North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz is the best quarterback in the 2016 draft pool.
Mayock made his proclamation based on Wentz's Pro Day on Thursday. By all accounts, it was a fireworks show in which he completed 63-of-65 passes. "I've watched every game that he was in this year, and I'm more convinced than ever that he's the top quarterback in this draft," Mayock said on NFL Network. He has received unanimous praise in the early going for his Pro Day work (which he completed in Fargo with 14 NFL teams absent due to a snowstorm). NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt referred to it as "one of the best [P]ro [D]ays I've ever witnessed" while colleague Daniel Jeremiah called Wentz's outing "an A if not an A-plus." The 6-foot-5, 237-pounder has aced all of his pre-draft work to this point and figures to be the first or second quarterback drafted barring some sort of wacky unforeseen draft day shenanigans.

I really value what mayock and Jeremiah say I think there soild evaluators
I think if Goff goes to Cleveland, It's very likely that someone jumps up to get Wentz. I think its less likely that someone burns all that draft capital to get Goff if Wentz goes to Cleveland. People want to overthink and hate Goff for his frame (protein digestion issues made muscle gain difficult; he's already gaining weight) and a poor win-loss record (dragged down by a 1-11 season as a true freshman on an ugly team). I like the resilience, toughness, feet, accuracy, decisiveness, and confidence. I think Wentz will run the ball better than Goff does, and he is certainly more physical with the ball in his hand, but I think Goff will be quicker and just plain better at getting the ball into the hands of his skill players, the guys who should be running with the ball.
Still like them both, and I'm also intruiged by Wentz in Kelly's system.

No to Lynch. HELLLLLLLLLLLL no to Lynch, in fact.
Which guy has the will and relentlessness to be great? Give me that guy.

I do not get the Lynch hate. I watched some of his games and was impressed. Reminded me of college Big Ben before he got all assaulty.

Goff is a hell of a lot closer to Brady than Tolzien. And the comparison wasn't about Brady as a HOF lock. It was how much he grew physical wise. He was a skinny, nonathletic twig who put on weight and saw his arm get better in the NFL from his college days. Like Brady Goff is able to get the ball out super quick which limits the hits he takes. Not crazy to think he can put on 10-15 lbs by 2017. Not to mention Tolzien ran a run first offense and didn't throw the ball nearly as much as Goff. Goff in 2015 had more completions than Tolzien had attempts in his best season throwing the ball.

As for Mayock going crazy for Wentz...what did he say when Goff did his pro day? Mayock knows his stuff but he's media #1. The dude is another Gruden when it comes to the draft. The guy who's in front of him is the best around lol.

Carson seems like a good dude who from the sound of it has all the intangibles but Goff has shown me more while dealing with less on his own team. Some people use the Utah tape as a reason to knock the guy but what I liked about that game was he didn't give up.

Lynch at #7 is a hell no imo. Lynch if we trade down would be ok.

Not for me, at least if the rumors are true that he's been s**tting the bed in interviews because he struggles to grasp the NFL concepts. Big, athletic guy with arm strength, who also has a long, slow release, trouble with concepts...

Yuck.

If the rumors are false, he still has a really slow, clunky release for a Chip Kelly guy.

I threw out tolzien not because Goff is like him at all lol, but because for every tom Brady (who's not athletic or strong) there are a ton of tolzien's drafted.

I got no problem with Goff at all, have us drafting him in my last mock and id be thrilled to get him. But this thread is who would I prefer and at this stage in the game wentz is a better pick for SF IMO.

You say Goff has a quick release but so does wentz, Goff is a little more accurate on the shorter throws (wentz isnt bad there either) but wentz has a much better long ball IMO, I feel like they both have good pocket awareness with Goff having better feet, wentz looks more like a leader than Goff IMO and scouts have backed that up throughout the whole process. Wentz offers chip a mobile QB which is a big plus also.

Just my opionion

Oh here is what Mike and Jeremiah said about Goff after his pro day.

Jared Goff - QB - Golden Bears

NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock said Cal QB Jared Goff "put on a show" at California's pro day on Friday.
"He stepped up and put on a show. I like the script they went through," Mayock said. "They weren't afraid to let this kid show off his timing, touch and accuracy." His NFL Media colleagues weren't quite as high on the show, with Bucky Brooks giving Goff a B-plus for the workout and Daniel Jeremiah giving him a B grade. "This was not a scripted winner. There weren't just a bunch of lay-ups out there," Jeremiah said. "... I would probably give him a B overall. On the deep ball, you saw some nice touch on a couple of them. He overthrew two, and one underthrow. So I thought it was a little bit mixed on the deep ball. But I like the fact that they were taking shots in this workout. If you wanted to see a couple pinpoint throws, he gave you that. It just wasn't a flawless pro day. It was solid." Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson, sitting in the No. 2 slot and in desperate need for a quarterback, was on hand to scout Goff.
